    While Mar's [sic]atmosphere stretches further into space than Earth's, its just not substantial enough to allow auroras.

    I was under the impression that auroras were the result of charged particles in the solar wind being deflected by the magnetosphere, and was not dependent on atmosphere at all.

    While Mars does receive much less solar radiation than Earth, its magnetic field is nearly as strong, so auroras should have respectable strength.

    Consider Apache vs. IIS...IIS is in the minority there, but which is more secure?

    At one point, researcher Matt Conover was talking about a fairly obscure type of problem called a "heap overflow." When he asked the crowd, made up mostly of vice presidents, whether they knew about this type of issue, 18 of 20 hands went up.

    "I doubt that there is another large company on this planet that has that level of technical competency in management roles," Moore said.


    Anyone can say that they have knowledge of a particular issue...how many of these vice-presidents actually went on to demonstrate that knowledge? I'm guessing zero.

    Let me get this straight...800,000 other slashdotters are fed up with my 'shameless karma-whoring' and 'inane comments', but the only one I hear from is you? Somehow, I doubt that theory...I find it infinitely easier to postulate that your realization that your life hit its high point when you were potty-trained (feels good not to have to wear your diaper to school, doesn't it!), and it's all downhill from now on, compels you to lash out at your betters.
    Don't worry...I won't hold it against you...you're only acting out...you can't help yourself.

    In conclusion, please log off before you hurt yourself. While you're at it, format your hard drive, smash your computer with an axe, and eat the broken shards until you pass out from blood loss.

    Errant homonyms aside, this seems to make a lot of sense...after all, Apple is just a spreadsheet shy of an office suite...although between M$ Office and Open Office, I find myself wondering why they're even bothering...

    Also, wasn't there an Apple spreadsheet program previously...called 'grid' or something? I seem to recall something along those lines...perhaps 'Numbers' isn't a spreadsheet after all. The assumption that 'Numbers' is in fact a spreadsheet is only speculation, after all.

    Microsoft has always been about the assimilation of the technology of other companies...that in itself is no surprise. But between their music subscription service, their new image editing program, and now this, they've fired warning shots across the bows of three different types of applications, all in the space of a week and a half.

    Is this just a momentary flurry, or can we expect this escalation to continue?

    Actually, the GP is correct. While the photosynthetic pathway does produce a surplus of O2, when the plant metabolizes that stored food for energy, it uses O2 in that process, just like animals. The surplus of O2 we enjoy at the present time is only here because of the biomass of green plants present on this planet...if all those plants were to be eaten or burned, the O2 levels would go right back to zero (or nearly so).

    Sending any materials that we manage to mine from the moon back to the earth is madness. Besides their basic value, any materials that are up there have significant additional value just by virtue of them being up there...that is, not languishing at the bottom of an unreasonably deep gravity well.
