I studied comparative cognition (anthropology branch) and I can tell you that there are many studies that show that Dolphins use complex, syntactically based language in the wild. Chimps can learn complex language in the lab, but they don't have it in the wild like Dolphins do.
Dolphins also aren't known to use tools. So, this seems to be a obvious counter example to their hypothesis.
Thanks for the link. Just read through. Confirms what I had heard from other Europeans. There are clear limits on what is otherwise called "freedom of speech" so that it is not really "freedom of speech" in the sense that we have it here in the USA but more like "mostly you can say what you want as long as you don't offend people too much"
just a sampling of what's not allowed in Czech...much more in the article from other countries...
denigration of a nation, race, ethnic or other group of people (Article 355 of the Criminal Code),[65] i.e. hate speech, inciting of hatred towards a group of people or inciting limitation of their civil rights (Article 356 of the Criminal Code),[66]
public approval of a felony crime (Article 365 of the Criminal Code),[69]
public display of sympathy towards a movement oriented at curbing rights of the people (Article 404 of the Criminal Code),[70] e.g. propagation of hate-groups,
public denial, questioning, endorsement or vindication of genocide (Article 405 of the Criminal Code),[71] e.g. Auschwitz lie,
Don't get me wrong, these all seem aimed at making for a better society, and they may be good to have, but they are nonetheless limits of freedom of speech.
Nissan warranties Leaf batteries against capacity loss for 5 yrs or 60K miles.
10 years is a stretch for battery life for pure electrics. Look on the Leaf forums and you'll see plenty of people who start to experience capacity drops after a few yrs. Then again, there will be a market for used Leafs with diminished capacity for people who want a spare car for (very) local commuting.
Don't believe those 200+ mile range for $30K rumors...the costs just don't add up. Probably will see something more like a tiered approach where you can get...
125 miles for $30K 200 miles for $40K
Resale on the Leafs are already getting killed due to tax incentives.
My leaf was MSRP $31K. I'm leasing for $260/month for 24 months w/ 0 down w/ 24K miles allowed. It has a buy out price of $14,500.
While that makes sense, the claim of the article is that car prices are rising relative to household income -- in other words, it implies that the average new car used to be affordable, that it now is no longer so, and that it's continuing to become increasingly unaffordable.
Actually, car prices have been increasing at a MUCH lower rate than inflation or other costs due to automation of factories, better designs, electronics prices dropping, etc.
For example:
In 1996 I bought a NEW Honda Accord for $22,500 In 2015 you can buy a much better equipped Honda Accord for around $25,000 That's a 10% increase over 19 yrs! It's actually a decrease in price if you consider what you're getting for the cost (i.e. much more HP, MPG, safety, etc)
For reference...in that same time period, movie ticket prices have doubled, gas prices have tripled, housing prices have doubled.
u know that Hamas and their peers in Gaza are an islamist extremist movement who's stated goal is to destroy Israel and then take over the rest of the world.
if they were jews or christians they wouldn't be wielding guns. or at least not attempting to kill infidel civilians all the time.
typical muslims. they seem happy to kill and murder anyone who insults them or their beliefs. they also seem so happy to die themselves. if only they would value life like the rest of the world.
It's not that we don't know how to shoe horses, it's just that horses are so cheap these days what when their shoes break off, it's cheaper to toss the horse off a cliff and buy a new horse that has newer, more secure shoes on it.
My Nintendo 3DS XL recently broke when it dropped and the screen cracked. I was able to get a new screen on line for $30, thinking I'd spend an hour or two and replace the screen but it has become a huge hassle which has taken 4+ hrs and $10+ in new tools and it's still incomplete. I'd say I have a 50% chance of fixing it at all.
Lesson learned is I should have sold it on ebay as is for $50 and bought a new one for $150. It didn't pay to try to fix.
Really? I thought it was really funny. Most of my friends rented it on release day, and most of them thought it was at least kinda funny. No one thought it was bad.
Companies should be free to hire cyber mercenaries to decimate their attackers. Maybe that's what's going on here? Or maybe they're getting a little US Mil support.
You're really making a supporting argument here. Punishment like time outs and spankings, etc. are exactly the types of things that lead to the kids you observe in your college job. Kids that are afraid to fail. That need their parent's approval/blessing for everything.
Challenging your kid to work through their issues, to think critically, to resolve their frustrations, to redirect their energy, to do all the kinds of things the article is getting at...are exactly the things needed to produce the kinds of students you would like to see.
Don't know why so many people on slashdot are misunderstanding the gist of this article as sheltering or babying kids and instead are in favor of making kids suffer for the sake of suffering. Perhaps these are people who suffered so much as kids themselves and are defending this as a way to justify their own upbringing?
Really has nothing to do with kids running wild. Perhaps you're not a parent?
Think about it from a business perspective. How do you get the most out of your employees? What makes a good manager? Punishments will only get you so far and will generate lots of problems with retention and performance in the long run. Positive reinforcement, recognition, freedom of choice and exploration, etc., well set expectations, well set milestones, etc will lead to real success long term.
You guys fail to see the point here. Perhaps you're not parents. Perhaps your bad parents of the type described in the summary.
The point is that there are ways of engaging kids to address the core reasons for their acting out and/or to redirect their energy into something positive. Really has nothing to do with spoiling or coddling or calling everyone a winner. It's the same behavior that any good manager at work should exhibit, rather than just declaring that there will be punishments for all until moral improves.

i imagine if you did this in the usa you'd get sued for using spectrums you don't own. does anyone care in mexico?
What a coward you are. Posting lies.
2015 Accord LX = $21,890
https://www.truecar.com/prices...
Sure, you can max it out to get over $30K, but even the LX model is much more powerful and better equipped than my 1996 EX model.
FYI...there was no V6 Accord in 1996. Top end model had an inline 4 w/ 130 hp.
Ah, but you're controlling for inflation. I wasn't doing that in my example.
I remember I was paying about $0.89/gallon about 10 yrs ago.
If I control for inflation, car costs have actually DECREASED substantially over the last 20 yrs.

They bring the cars from the engineers to the customers. They have people skills damn it!

even if you do advocate killing artists with kalashnikovs, how many artists really carry kalashnikovs?!
in any case, freedom of speech is an american phenomenon and is not automatic in much of europe.

Sounds about right. There at least several million just in the West Bank and Gaza alone and double that in Syria and Egypt.
typical muslims. they seem happy to kill and murder anyone who insults them or their beliefs. they also seem so happy to die themselves. if only they would value life like the rest of the world.
there's also a nice market for broken stuff these days via ebay...so often people don't fix stuff themselves but they allow others to do so.
you can sell your broken laptop, game system, phone, etc via ebay and recoup some value that can be used to buy a new one.

I saw an old lady try to board with knitting needles! She was clearly hoping to make an Afghan in mid-flight.
