US warships really shouldn't be anywhere near China, let alone on that side of the world. What do you think the US would do if China had missile boats patrolling off the coast of Florida in "international waters" or if they were coordinating military exercises with Russia of the coast of LA, as we do with their rival, Japan, off of their coast.
Not at all surprising that they would view us as the aggressor.
if i was china, i wouldn't want my peeps using google. it will result in MASSIVE American data collection and knowledge of everything that chinese people are searching for online. A major risk to national stability/security.
My calculus teachers didn't allow us to use calculators when I was in college. I felt like I understood the math better this way. He picked problems that were not hard to do without calculators. Unless the goal is to teach kids to use the calculators themselves, why are they needed?
The USA should let ISIS do their thing. They have not attacked the US. They are only threatening us now because we are attacking them without provocation. Their recent killing of two USA citizens who were caught in Syria were only done try to get the US to stop bombing them...not out of a desire to start a war with the US.
Let regional countries tackle them if they are scared. They are plenty capable of doing so. They just don't think they need to because they think the USA will take care of it. In the end they are the ones threatened by ISIS.
The rebels will just install tin foil hats on all their tanks!
But seriously, it could serve to push up their timeline and violence, as they tell their followers, "look guys, we have 6 months to inflict maximum damage and exhaust all of our ammunition, get going with the destruction guys", which could limit negotiation and alter their ability to wait out their demands.
I meant from the cognitive perspective, which is what these articles are typically focused towards. It's not that Neaderthals are creating cave art. They're just creating art...and like you said, this is the form of it that we see.
Maybe not doubling every 18...but the general trend is there...
WiFi speeds are about 100x faster than 10 yrs ago. Boot times are about 10-20x faster than 10 yrs ago. Battery life is about 4-5x longer than 10 yrs ago
Meanwhile, prices are about 1/4 what they were 10 yrs ago.
there was a time, back in the 90's (rapid progression of 286/386/486/Pentium) where you needed to upgrade your computer every 2-3 yrs or you couldn't even run the latest software...and i'm not talking hard core games...even simple stuff like word processing or the newest ver of windows.
seems like now you can get by with 5-6 yr cycles, esp with the introduction of an ssd and more ram.
people are forgetting that no one's going to be awake or likely aging during this flight. suspended animation will be required for a trip like this and likely possible in the not too distant future (100 yrs?).
so it doesn't really matter so much if it takes 13.3 yrs or 100 yrs.
the hardest part will be that people don't do well at funding and executing projects that last more than a life time. the organizations and countries and people that launch these missions will be long gone by the time the crew arrives. there's a high chance they won't even know the mission existed and will not have the (ancient) equipment to communicate with the crew.
It's interesting how for most of human history people were partnering up and and having babies around 14/15 yrs old and being grandparents at 30 yrs old and great grandparents at 45 yrs for the few that were lucky enough to live that long.
Now in our highly specialized society, people are commonly having babies in the mid-30s.
since some trees and such can live for hundreds of years, and turtles can live for more than 100 yrs, I wonder if we can learn from them how to extend life.
graphics hardware is so cheap these days. Even your $85 Amazon Fire TV can render some pretty awesome games...and it just keeps improving...so it seems like the real benefit isn't graphics per se but in AI and CPU processing, in maintaining massive worlds, and in enabling a uniform gaming experience across platforms/clients.
I would think one benefit would be that you can allow for a subscription service where people could try lots of different games or play portions of games without having to download hundreds of gigs of data for games they only play a few times or when they are only playing a specific mission and don't need all the maps or game modes available.
I'm not saying this is what everyone wants or that it works for all use cases, but I imagine this is one scenario.
If you've already pushed your joystick towards the mammoth AND are known to frequent slashdot, one could speculate that you will be crazy enough to strip down and wield a pitchfork.
Yes.
Why should the US have a military presence and posturing half way around the world? We shouldn't. Look at all the wars and world ire it causes.
Fixed it for you....

if they were creating cave art, then they were certainly creating other forms of art. nothing special about caves.
while funneling billions of dollars a year to ruthless criminal warlords in South America?

I'll take that over speed increases.
Well, in their defense, ECC on the flash memory isn't exactly rocket science.

yeah, but probably no humans there to crush. you'd imagine the local species would have evolved to deal with the pressure.
but they have smartphones too...its not the technology that sets us free.
new meaning to "your google profile will follow you around"...what's that buzzzzz overhead?
noticed i got a down vote. i wasn't being sarcastic or inflammatory.
ukraine gave up its nukes with american assurances that they would be safe.
if they are not safe and we're not getting involved, then give them some nukes back.
we don't really have to get involved in the conflict per se. we can just provide ukraine with a few dozen nukes.
The feds should mandate that all victims must wear cams too!

Wait, you said fork. Hmmm..that's a tough one.
