- If you want to buy a company for the devellopers it has, I could understand that. But any half-decent head-hunting firm would be cheaper.
- If you want a community without having to start one? Buying their favorite distro and then changing it, will allmost certainly alienate the community a lot.
- To have a full featured linux based OS to do with as you please? That's virtually impossible, considering the GPL and a rather vocal Linus Torvalds. BSD licensis would allow that, if I recall correctly, but not the GPL.
My point is: can someone please explain to me why Oracle needs to buy a distro, when they can just fork one?
They have too many products spread across several different technology markets to be anywhere near doomed.
This isn't allways a good thing. From a marketing perspective for instance, a bad product from one division of the company will reflect badly on all other divisions. Or to give another example, let's stipulate that Apache is the bestest server system outthere (might be, might not be, that isn't the point.... no, it really isn't the point). Now, MSN is still part of MS and is therefore required to work with an inferior server system (IIS in this example). It will therefore be more difficult for MSN to compete with others not burdened by a preselected server system.
Btw you know it's not the same thing right? You were just being sarcastic, weren't you? If not I could add a cautionary tale about a vendor lock-in of all operational data of a company I used to work for....
From TFA: WiFi on the 770, however, may not work much better. The review model I tested frequently failed to log on to my home network's wireless signal for no apparent reason; uselessly vague error messages such as "network problem" left me guessing about the cause.
Now, don't go blaiming his home wifi setup. There's nothing wrong with it, I haven't had any problems over the last two months, and I'm two miles away using a Pringles box as an antenna.
PROBABLY BECAUSE READING ALL UPPERCASE LETTERS IS SO ANNOYING.
And a little more white space didn't kill anyone (at least I'm fairely certain of it). In short, the EULA's I've seen, are designed to annoy the reader as much as possible.

Yes, perhaps we should add numbers to the back of the name. Come to think of it, maybe it would be better to define the name by numbers as well, then you wouldn't have to worry about typos and phonetic problems. Maybe this system should look something like:
2001:0db8:85a3:08d3:1319:8a2e:0370:7334
Or 8 groups of 4 hexadecimal digits.
It may not be banned in a number of places, but it would be a good idea to do so. When citing a source, you base yourself on the credentials of someone else. An anonymous source is therefore worthless.
We tried that 'iMac Core Duo 2.0 w/1 Gig of RAM' at work, after a recommendation by Steve (not his real name), he said he used one before at a former employer. The point being that it's a lot faster and has a lower TCO compared to anything else on the shelves then (we're talking back in the day, when I had to walk to work through 3 ft. of snow, uphill BOTH WAYS). Anyway, we convinced our supervisor that this new system would make our work much more productive. He decided that we would test the system while working on this EA project, hoping that it would cut our estimated work week from 170 hours to 100 hours. Like you suggested, the boxen was totally inadequate. Short story, Steve got fired after the project totally bombed. We lost the account and half the company commited suicide. So: Get Some PRIORITIES!
The people that work in these areas usually write scientific papers on a fairly regular basis, they might even read some as well. The understanding and science is therefore usually quite open. Now, a wiki might make 'communication' faster, and more available to the general public, but it will hardly speed up the solution finding.

And to repond to a couple other posts you made, we need to think about global warming with a clear head. We still don't know if mandating everybody to drive a Prius is going to stop it. We still are not sure what all the effects are going to be, the Earth is a complex system. We still don't know what the effects of the industrialisation is exactly.
We need more research, we need contingency plans, be it protection against a rising sea or moving to Mars. It is just to early to dismiss any of it.

Now, I could see how this would be an very interesting and topical story during the Clinton years, but Bush has been in power how long again?
The problem isn't that the people in Africa need laptops or clean water or roads or other infrastructure or a better economy.... They need it all. Since we can't give them all at the same time, we have to start somewhere. So why not a 100$ laptop on which someone could design the new infrastructure.
Also, talking about a continent as if it were a country or region, has allways made me a little queezy. The one thing that would help Africa right now, are democratically elected governments. Then the vast natural resources of the continent would actually benifit the people (of a large number of countries).
Be gratefull, now your shoe shining business can charge those lawyers more, it's the "trickle down effect".

It's completely nonsensical.
Yes, you've finally got it. I knew we would get there in the end.....

Why just one number, or "Earth ID" as you call them? With my plan you can have 5×10^28 numbers per person.

"Oh, I made that in windows, I'll have to reboot"
That is the only situation you don't need to worry about. You have a point, but should really think about your examples.
