  1. Re:Slow start could have been strong finish, too on Enterprise Finale Synopsis Released · · Score: 1

I hear this argument all the time ('Star Trek always takes a while to get good') and I've never understood it.

Why should Star Trek be held to a different standard than any other TV show? Most non-Trek shows aren't accorded the same luxury, they have to hit the ground running or they'll be cancelled. Plenty of shows manage to do this. Firefly was excellent from day one. The new Battlestar Galactica: not one weak episode in the bunch. Even the slow starters like B5 and Farscape had hit their stride by the end of the first season and established themselves as unique, distinctive shows.

Enterprise finally delivered in its *fourth* season. Unfortunately, it was too late -- nobody was watching any more. But if it hadn't had the Star Trek name, it wouldn't even have lasted one year. You can't realistically argue that it should have been given even more of a chance than it already had.

  3. Budget lighting solution on On Decorating Your Computer Room? · · Score: 2, Informative

Augment regular (yellowish) lighting with one or two of those relatively cheap blue 'daylight' bulbs.

Also remember that the more adjustable your lighting (both in position/angle and in intensity) the more likely you'll be able to get satisfactory results. And when work is tedious, you can try to perfect the lighting configuration for literally hours. Always consider the all-important procrastination factor.

The episode you refer to was actually 'The Coming of Shadows' from season two.

One of my favourite episodes (I couldn't pick just one) would be 'The Geometry of Shadows' from early season 2, where the Technomages were introduced. No big explosions, just a wonderful feeling to it, and I liked the old, jovial Sheridan before he got a hard edge. JMS conveyed more in that episode through what was implied than through what was said - a wonderful episode for the imagination.

Kind of a shame that they brought back the Technomages at all, really. They worked so well in that one episode because they weren't neatly explained by the end of the episode. They were left mysterious.
