    I watched a multimillion dollar football/track/soccer statium go up at my High School while math and science teachers were using 4 year old books and 6-8 year old computers and software packages. there is your answer.

    This is the first time that I agree with the entertainment industry on a case like this; if the end user wants to record it, share it with friends, re-watch ot timeshift content, fine BUT this is the cable company cacheeing all content and doing mass redistribution, for profit -- thus it is a commercial enterprise using the content in a way that their license doesnt allow, pretty clear cut to me.

    What will most iBook/Macbook buyser do with it? lets make a list:

    check email and surf the web
    use itunes and iLife (but not likly to be using RAW or HD)
    play back movie trailers
    do projects for School (think MS Office/iWork)

    Maybe some LIGHT design work (a great little computer to take with you to show clients mock-ups that you made on your desktop workstation)

    play back DVDs.

    No one expects a gaming or "desktop replacment" laptop to be in the sub $1500 range, Mac or Windows!
    The Intel GPU also blows away the old ATI 9X00 Mobilities that were in the iBooks, the shared ram is not that big of a deal for most, and if it is, just order 2 GB chips, and upgrade.

    I beleive with certin types of DDR ram, pairing yeilds better proformance than a single bigger DIM, so I would probably match both slots with new ram anyway if I were upgrading; hell, for ~$200 from a 3rd party, why not upgrade to 2GB

    I hear so many people talk about the "Dark fiber" that is running from sea to shining sea, I say that if the telcos dont use them, the government should take them by eminant domain and light that stuff up! as for the last mile; fiber to the curb installed in any new construction, road repaves, ect. and the rest; public WIMAX as a utility, like water and sewage

    With a default install of RH or suse; can you play a DVD? can you use the that copy of Photoshop, Office apps like Visio that you have hundreds or thousands of dollars invested in?

    People say "just use the gimp" to you I say that The Gimp SUCKS so hard that it isnt funny! OOo is a great alternative, except for the fact that if you eant to share docs with the most popular suit' MS office, you have to lock the files into a propriatery format!

    Several Linux distros on their own make great enviornments, but without the support of huge vendors like Adobe and a massive teardown of MS Office lock-in, there is no way that this can take off.

    As much as the GNU folks are pained by the thought, without propriatery tools like Quickbooks, Adobe CS and acrobat product lines, apps like iTunes to use the content that windows users already have, DVD playback, and so on, few are willing to make the transition.

    what if joe-six-pack calls his local police dept to report, lets say, a man picking a lock, but totally ignores the locksmith van on the other side of the frame? or reports a person with a gun when it is just, say a tire tool to change his flat? And this deoesnt take into account the "nosy neighbor" or "grudge match" aspects that could arise.

    this is one reality show that the Europeans can keep.

    I voted for Bush in '04, my first presedential election, before I was well read on all of the crap that was and is really going on.

    I think there are a lot of people in my position, If I had it to do over again, I would have voted for Kerry, in hind-site, he doesnt look all that bad.

    that said, I really think that the republicans and Dems are the same on this issue, the folks in power want as much information as possible, data is knoledge, knoledge is power; So I ask, would A Gore or Kerry whitehouse be any differant?

    Sorry to reply to self but I have one more thought:

    They could have waited untill Monday, but Apple acctually released them in a HOLIDAY weekend...Someone (maybe a whole dev group) acctually came in, and got the patches out today, they could have waited till next week, hell, they could have waited till 10.4.7 if they wanted to, they didnt, THAT is what sets them apart from MS

    I hear, every nonth or so, now a days that "OSX is as volnerable as Windows" yet I have yet to see one attack in the real world that doesnt requier utter user stupidity (hint -- a web-app should never need your root/"admin" password)

    Please someone, give me a web address that will install spy/crudware without my consent automaticly, show me how, with no user intervention, an unpatched box can be hacked to hell by spamers to use in botnets in under 2 minutes...show me this or shut the fuck up!

    I understand that OSX isnt perfectly secure, it has its bugs, so does BSD as a whole, but the holes get FIXED and not denied for months untill the hole is used to destry hundreds of thousands of PCs.
