  1. Re:Garbage on Datawind Not Blowing Smoke: $38 Tablet Coming To the US · · Score: 1

I agree that the bottom feeder android tablets might as well be made by apple. The user experience can be so off-putting as to sour people's vision of android. That said, they do have their place. If it's "good enough" to do what you want it to do then it's great for the price.
The key to better battery life is to drop it into airplane mode unless you need the connection. I leave it on in airplane mode, then turn off airplane mode when i pick it up, use it, then drop it back into airplane mode, turn the screen off and put it down. It will last for days if you do that.

It sucked $BODY_PART when I last tried it. Granted, it's been awhile, so I would hope it's been improving since then. I was just trying to use it as a remote while using Media Center since the regular remote will go to sleep (so not very taxing), but it failed miserably at being able to mimic the controller commands. Yes, it would have been awesome if done right. I will give it another shot next time I watch something.

I was thinking the same thing.
Forced air should work, as long as I'm blowing the water up the windshield faster than it's accumulating it would be fine. Right now wipers just swoosh it to the side faster than it's accumulating. A blower could even have variable speeds.
At the end of automated drive through car washes is a big blower that effectively dries your car by blowing the water back and down (think big hair dryer, but not so hot).

This is true. They don't need an always on connection, but you may need a firmware update to play a "new" disc. It's the reason my only bluray player is a PS3 (it very likely sucks more power to play a disc, but it's very likely to get an update, and very unlikely to be hardware constrained or unable to support an update).

Most likely, your old player didn't support the "latest-and-greatest" DRM crap so you had to update. And, fortunately, your player had the update available... You could have been left in the cold.

    Quoted from the first link:
One of the main reasons include copy protection. The Blu-ray format utilizes a variety of copy protection methods such as DRM (Digital Rights Management) and AACS (Advanced Access Content System) to prevent Blu-ray Disc movies from being pirated.

A quote from the second link:
Sometimes, manufacturers just stop supporting their products, even models only a few years old.

So correct me if I'm wrong: You know you sent X amount of money to destination Y. Destination Y only knows it got X amount of money from JPMorgan, and doesn't care where it really came from because it's rolling in dough. JPMorgan knows that you gave X amount of money to destination Y, and will be more than happy to cough that information up upon court order. So what is the purpose of the "anonymous" claim? Because you don't want Y to know you gave them money?

I'm with this guy. Get the laptop sufficiently loaded in the first place so you don't have to find parts to add to it to keep it going. Also check out Sager I got one around last Christmas with 2 hard drives and 16GB ram when most Dells only had the option to come with 8GB (and for a hefty price). Don't get me wrong I like Dells, but I wanted 16 gigs and wasn't willing to chop my leg off for it. It runs windows 7 on one drive and multiple flavors of linux on the other.

  10. What about culture? on Ask Aubrey de Grey About Longevity Research · · Score: 1
    • What about the cultural implications?
      - By this I refer to those who are in their 70's today who grew up in a time when racism was the norm. Racism, while certainly not gone, has faded as children grew up in a more diverse world.
People from one "era" living on into changing times may have the effect of slowing down change.

    • What about the family system?
      - Right now we know our parents, grandparents, and possibly great grandparents. Would we simply come up with new names for previous generations?

    • It's been shown that people generally have fewer children as a society becomes more educated/career driven, but even 1 child per 2 adults would push us to overpopulation if the adults lived to even 500 years. No real question here as it falls under the overpopulation line, but it ties into China - whose population still grows years after the one child per couple law.

    • I'm assuming that women would still go through menopause around 50, but if they didn't this would cause interesting problems with the gene pool.

    • Going back to my original point: racial tensions fade as races become more intermixed. New people coming into the system and old people going out helps drive this. Keeping the status quo isn't necessarily the best plan. For instance, the supreme court judges are seated for life (or until they decide to quit)...

Enough of my babbling....just be careful what you wish for
