1. IT'S JUST LANGUAGE!!! on How Would You Define a Planet? · · Score: 1

What label you put on an object does not change its physical properties. Come on, people, how many good scientists are wasting their time arguing over useless titles? I couldn't care less about the definition of the word "planet."

Any fact is nothing more than a theory with lots of evidence. The border between fact and theory is a fudgeable, smudgeable, lovabely blurred boundary. Saying something like "The Earth Orbits around the Sun" is no worse than saying "Cold Dark Matter is a new type of elementary particle...."

Of course, they do say "appareantly cosists of", based on "Recent advances in cosmology." So they *do* mention some uncertainty, unlike with my Earth example. But the fact : theory comparison remains the same.

There are two things that are happening simultaneously that I can see in the OS battle.

1) Microsoft is making really horrible decisions with their OS marketshare, as seen in this exact story.

2) Software developers are making things more and more Linux-compatible.

I am hoping that by the time I am forced to upgrade from win2k (or play no more games,) that these exact games that I wish to buy will be Linux-compatible. Then I can be forced to "upgrade" to Linux - OH NO!

Until then, I will sit here on win2k and hope that Time is not my enemy.

4. Re:Evolution marches on . . . on Next Step in Human Evolution · · Score: 1

You don't even have to be that specific to see that evolution continues. Knowing that all Humans started from the same ancestors, the question arises: where did the differences between ethnic groups come from? Why are all the Africans dark-skinned, whereas Europeans are pale in comparison?

Evolution is a slow process. Even with the small amount of mixing that occurs, the continental boundaries still keep us mostly-seperated, and that promotes us to evolve further.

Most Americans are of European descent, so Europeans and Americans are the most similar. However, look at Europe, Asia, and Africa. Even though we still fit the scientific definition of being the same race, eventually, if we keep ourselfs isolated like we are, the continental boundaries will drive evolution so far to create three "new" species... although that's going to take a while, Evolution does indeed march on.

On a lighter note...

When that happens, we get into Intergalactic War 4 to determine what group gets to keep the designation 'homo sapien.'

On the plus side, then we could bang all the Asian-descended hotties without risk of pregnancy. Or would that be like screwing an animal, them being of a different species and all?

Ah, who knows. I'll be dead before that happens anyway :)

Note: I am not racist.

This requires keeping track of one number up to 12 and one number up to 3, instead of four numbers up to 91 for your method."

Here's an interesting memory game to try [2 more more people]

Take a deck of cards, shuffled. Remove 1 card randomly and place it face down on the side of the table. All of the players sit in a semi-circle in front of the dealer.

The dealer than plays 1 card face up in the center of the table. ~1 second later, he plays another on top of the card. Repeat 51 times, showing the players 1 card in the deck at a time. When the last card is played, cover the deck up in the middle of the table.

The players (and dealer if he didnt cheat) has seen all cards - save one. The pur-chance-guessing-game ensues: what is that card that is face-down on the side of the table?

I agree. The CGI, Sound, etc. were all top[ish]-notch.

There were mainly 3 things that bothered me.

1) the Acting. it seems bland, with little real emotion. You know it's bad when you can clearly tell they are acting when you've never seen the actors before.
2) the writing. Although the writing might be good with good acting, I feel like i've got a bunch of Keaneau Reeves on the screen ... = NOT GOOD
3) The Lighting. Especially with the lightsabers. I know it makes sense, but having the lightsaber pointed directly at the screen just looks... awkward. The lighting otherwise looks monotone, obvious, and non-suggestive.

However, I'll probably still give it a see when it comes out on video (if?)

13. Re:Lava flow on Mount St. Helens Shoots Steam, Ash · · Score: 2, Informative

There shouldn't be any visible lava flow. The best you will get is possibly a bit of lava oozing out at the surface - probably already crusted over, so it would just look like a rock with growing cracks. It has to do with the lava type. The lava in Hawaii, that flows very well, has much less dissolved gases and is at a higher tempurature than the lava in Mt. St. Helens. The dissolved gases is the really important part that make it more explosive. As a gaseous magma rises towards the surface, the pressure from the overlying rock lessens. Like in a soda bottle when you open the top (thus reducing pressure) the dissolved gasses bubble out to the surface. The gasses in magma have nowhere to go. The surface is clogged with solidified magma and is sealed. So, when the gasses inside the volcano dissolve, they have no volume to expand into. So the pressure goes UP UP UP! (like in a soda bottle, if you shake it.) Eventually, this pressure builds up so high that it goes KABLOOIE! and blows the piece of cooled rock that seals the to of the volcano off (this is called the Plug.) The only lava you'd see is after the plug gets blown off and while the plug re-forms.
