"It's difficult to imagine that that processor still has the grunt to run an OS these days."
What, did you forget that pretty much everything you're doing RIGHT NOW is exactly the same stuff you were doing back on Windows 95/98? Playing games, surfing the web, watching videos (not streamed, usually from VCD or DVD) and maybe getting some work done.
Nothing has changed. People just got shitty at programming.
MenuetOS shows this off quite well. It does everything. Even runs Quake. Full GUI, supports all kinds of shit.
What they show is that while violent offenders are a "minority" when you combine all other categories into one , as a category violent offenders are by far the largest category."
You fucking disingenuous asshole. There are only two types of crime, violent and non-violent. It doesn't matter how you try grouping shit up, you witless fool.
You don't need a computer to run a camera. To boot, a single-purpose medical device shouldn't need some massively complex operating system PLUS anti-virus.
Whatever happened to a simple audio log? We've got recorders that encode directly to MP3. Just make the recording and copy it into patient files after the end of procedure.
This 'do everything with a computer' mentality is exactly why we have these nonsensical issues happening in the first place.
Ain't my property and I'm not getting paid to do it. I've contributed to this site more than enough over more than a decade. I'll start charging for my work, thanks.
Quite often, clicking on a headline with NO POSTS just brings you to the front page of slashdot.
In fact, oh, look, hovering over one story right now with NO POSTS shows the URL link at the bottom to be THE FRONT PAGE OF SLASHDOT.
In fact, right now, clicking any link in the Firehose just expands the story, and never takes you into the actual submission itself.
Please read and understand your own code base before being silly like that again. I've been here way longer than you and know every change about this site (including having a ripped copy of the BETA slashcode. I know all this site's shitty issues.)
Don't post stories to the front page if they don't have any comments. It makes it impossible to comment unless you find the story in the FireHose and go through there.
"If your POS terminals are directly connected to the internet"
Well, how else do you expect corporate to push those new inventory prices to every store across the nation?
"Now boot up windows 95, fire up IE4 and post a reply to me from that machine"
I just did you one better and did it from Windows 3.1, on dialup, using Netscape Comunicator, on a Pentium 75MHz Toshiba Satellite Pro CDS100.
"and the tv card is 1080p on modern computers, your display resolution on modern computers is higher."
That's not exactly true. Before everyone went to 1920x1080 in the 2000s, we had 2048x1536, and that was the 90s.

1.4 Megabytes.
Most touchscreen POS systems from ELO and other similar companies.
They're on 386/486 hardware. Go look at your Taco Bell or Del Taco or non-McCafe McDonalds systems.
Intel was still selling embedded 386 and 486 processors until 2007. POS terminals don't require jack shit for power. They're all over the place.
It's a rip-off of Brutal doom with double-jump and CoD regen health crap.
I'll stick with real Doom 2. Latest Zandronum mod - Complex Doom Invasion. Pretty fucking slick.
"I could play doom 3 on $500 worth of hardware."
You're doing it wrong. You can run D3 maxed the fuck out on a P4, 1GB RAM, and a midrange 512MB GeForce 5 or 6.
You'd barely break past $100.
"Sure, spin those stats.
What they show is that while violent offenders are a "minority" when you combine all other categories into one , as a category violent offenders are by far the largest category."

"We don't currently have the capacity to manufacture application-specific hardware in sufficient quantities to use it for medical devices."
I think you're failing to take the context of the story along wiht my comment.
To record logs, one only needs a microphone, and tape recorder.
We've had enough of those to supply the entire planet twenty times over, now.
You don't need a computer with anti-virus for such a simple damned thing.
Uhh, to record audio logs of surgical procedures, do you need more than a microphone and tape recorder? Do you need anti-virus?
Nope.
To record usage of medical instruments during said procedure, do you need more than paper and pencil and human to operate said equipment?
Nope.
Guess you didn't bother looking at their CO offices, which are much, MUCH larger than SF.
But you keep on talking when I've already done the research and can speak about the subject. You still look like a complete and utter moron.
Protip: Homeboy isn't a CA resident! :D
Many companies are 'based in Ireland' but are entirely in the USA.
Try again when your logic can work with the facts of the real world.
Oh, look, SB has LOWER TAXES than the other places mentioned. I wonder why it's HQ'd there?
I've tanked my karma multiple times and have NEVER lost it.
I have the fucking e-mail where it specifies what our reward would be for taking the Slashdot survey.
You are wrong.
It's more criminally negligent to utilize general-purpose stuff for specialized medical operations.
This is why we have application-specific hardware.
You don't need a computer to run a camera. To boot, a single-purpose medical device shouldn't need some massively complex operating system PLUS anti-virus.

An even better idea would be to quit relying upon technology, because it won't always be there for you, as quite handily proven in this case.
If you, as a doctor, need a computer to perform a task that did not originally require one, you're failing the basic concepts of medicine.
"I've yet to see any evidence of this, despite all the machines having their updates set to automatic"
Try TURNING THEM OFF ENTIRELY and then update something like your .NET framework.
It will be reverted.

"That bug was fixed a while on the front page."
Yet it's still occurring right now as I'm typing my reply to you.
Firefox, Chrome, IE, and Edge, so it's not the browser having the issue.
Not correct, Whipslash.

"I think people should be free to experiment with their own bodies, we only live once."
I've died twice, maybe YOU only live once, mortal!
