But my question is how much was the Psion Series 3 in 1991? I owned a Casio organizer or two.....one costing almost as much as my present palm. New Palm's start at $129 right now, or a used III or IIIe is easily available for about 50-70 dollars US on ebay. Heck, an m100 used costs about $100.

My point was basically that it didn't have the functionality of my Palm...a device that wasen't really created, in it's size, 10 years ago. I can't speak for the Psion though, I've heard generally good things.

I had something that looked like the Psion 3 back then, it was made by Citizen, I have it somewhere...But personally I prefer pen-input for most things, and my attachable keyboard when I'm feeling verbose.

Oh, I really don't know, is the Psion bigger than a Palm, it looks it, but I could be mistaken.

Palms, and dare I say, PocketPC's are still the best choice out there for many people. Even though my Palm Keyboard has about 4 mm key travel, it still makes it a hell of a lot more useful.

/me clutches and pets Palm IIIxe, whispers, "It's ok, you'll always be my favourite...."

Furthermore, PDA's are quite durable.....I mean to say that 10 years ago, such technology as to make a palm would be many times larger, but also very delicate likely. Hell I have a Toshiba laptop....with 286 :-D....that has a read/write head that locks to the center every month or two....if I actually use it. My Palm on the other hand, glass screen and all, has been dropped plenty of times, been hit in my pocket, has survived a few impromptu wrestling sessions, and still looks like new.

Ok, maybe I'll just wait for a neural net, plus carrying around a severed human finger won't exactly make you popular

After applying the flash upgrade, it worked alright....Until you stored 20 addresses, then it would promptly shut-down, and turn back on, triumphantly announcing that it had cleared its memory, fantastic. After dropping it, and cracking the cover, I returned it, ran away with my $99.99+tax. A year later I bought my good friend and confidant, Mr. IIIxe. It's like a m105....but with a readable screen, and without a cartoonish appearance.

Finally, Newtons are great, but I'm still scared off by the fact that few people are still developing for them. I'll probably break down and buy a 120 w/ OS 2.0 just to play with, but I think my Palm will remain my primary device. The only way I can crash it is either by loading a primative version of Rand McNally's Streetfinder GPS software, or by dropping it off something >50 metres.

Oh, and I'm using my palm to supplant a notebook, thanks to the $99 folding keyboard, which in itself is worth 10x as much as a DaVinci.

Anyone have a Newton they want to sell? Ebay is being unhelpful at the moment

Also, don't forget, this clie is rather think, not as think as the Casio 1xx line of devices, "bricks" they are not so affectionatly called by palm enthusiests. However, for the features, this clie is definately the most appealing Palm ever, I just want that 320x320 resolution....hmmm 128 Meg memory stick chock full of pictures, but probably in 8-bit color, I can't remember where I heard that one. Anyhow, I'm just glad to see that what sony has done is within the realm of the PalmOS....Until then, everyone run to your local Staples and pick up a IIIxe for $149.99, with free copies of Desktop to go and Documents to go....I just wish IIIxe's were that cheap when I bought mine, but I'm happy, now I shall be quiet

  18. L2 Cache on AMD on Long-Delayed Rambus Machines May Show at Comdex · · Score: 2

Everyone knows that the Athlon is mad fast and is an excellent option for those on a budget. It is not as cheap as previous AMD processors because it is advanced and FAST. However, if AMD goes through the cost of developing a new chipset incorporating L2 right now, they will be so far into the red that they will sink like a guy with a lead shoes. AMD is staying narrowly afloat by getting by on a shoestring development budget which has worked so far because they have done nothing revolutionary. In the future though Intel may be able to pull ahead simply because it's market share allows them to charge so much more for a processor that is currently good, but it also supports a massive bloated development effort.

For the future of computer processors, something revolutionary must happen in the basic development. The little copper wires in chips can only be so small and close before they stop working. Intel and IBM are currently working to deveolop the future which is supported by the bloated profit margins of both companies. They will be the ones who develop tomorrows technology. When they do, AMD will make it slower but cheaper, and eventually develop the technology slightly further themselves.

As for memory prices they are infuriating, but what are you gonna do?? So your paying what you would have paid 2 years ago for the same memory? There is nothing to be done but wait, curse, and try to find some newbie with some extra memory, punch him in the balls and take IT!!!!!

heat for one thing and power for another. Believe it or not processors running at 16-100 Mhz generate heat! I ran the distributed.net DOS client on my 486 DX2/50 overnight once and then popped open the case, while it was still running, and touched the little magical chip containing the little Chinese guy who had been, for the whole night long, doing floating point calculations with his good friend Mr. Co-processor, and discovered that the chip gets hot. This was inside an old Gateway 2000 Behemoth-Tower with lots of interior volume and a good fan. Imagine a similar processor say a 486 SX/20, inside a little plastic TI calculator, sure it would be fast. But after you ran it for a while the plastic on the back would melt and get stuck to your flesh, inturupting your session of Super Mario Brothers 3D featuring Dolby Surround sound, and law suits would ensue. This is of course assuming that you would ever be able to shoe-horn a x86 processor in a tiny case, provide it with power, a bus, memory, and whatever else it wants. Power of course being the greatest obstacle...you can run a Z80 on 4 AA's for months of Tetris, graphing, and, oh yes... MARIO, but a x86 would require a battery pack the size of your TI-8x to give it enough juice for a day or two. In conclusion the eZ80 will be totally awesome if Texas instriments incorporates it in a Graphing calculator...Including a fast enough serial bus to connect a Cellular modem so you can go to slashdot.org and post lenghthy comments which will most likely never be read, such as this one.... 20. The TI graphing calculators run @ 6 Mhz on Zilog (re-)introduces the Z80 · · Score: 1

There seems to be a consensis here that the Z80 runs @ 1 Mhz. I know the Z80 is in the TI-81 to TI-86, and in these devices it runs @ 6 MHz, which is evenidenced by some of the impressive programs which can be run on assembly progamming. God knows that little processor has saved me from the bordom of a lenghthy physics lecture and endless notes in a humorously easy computer class, by providing me with the wonders of Tetris and Super Mario. What I don't understand is how the clock speed of the eZ80 will be changed, the brochure says it is capable of up to 80 Mhz, while executing instructions four times faster than the original Z80. Will each chip have a different clock speed or will all of the chips be capable of 80 Mhz??

I am very interested in taking apart my TI-82 or -86 and putting a eZ80 in the socket. But will the new processor run on the same voltage? If it runs @ 6 Mhz it will be four times faster, something which will be a definite advantage when graphing equations or manipulating Matricies...

Howfully prices will be set soon, something cheap enough to allow one to tinker with and not worry about if it gets fried in your graphing calculator.

True, this is not revolutionary, but it does take a drastic step forward in the propogation of Palm based PDA's. Think of the Visor as a sort of Palm-Lite. If something like the "Newton-Lite" had come along it could have very well saved the platform.
You could blame Handspring for inferring that the Visor was going to be revolutionary, but the bottom line is that the Visor will be good for the Palm community as a whole. It is a good product and it has a price which simply can't be beat. As a student I have always wanted a Palm PDA, and now I can afford the next best thing.
