You are right. But then you would save time as the searches are local. You also save money by reducing your internet usage. But yes, the idea is not very feasible.
I have an idea that might kill google. When you search for something, most of the times the resulting pages are more than 3-4 months old. We don't always need today's posting on the internet to satisfy our query.
So, if I were to take the whole Internet snapshot once every six months and sell it, then people can search the Internet locally using any search tool. Hence, no need of google.
Let's see whether this idea is feasible. The size of internet is in terabytes, let's say 500 terabytes. Let's say that we splice the Inetrnet according to some criteria such that a slice is only 10 terabytes. So, we would need 20 disks of capacity 500 GB each for that particular slice. The cost would be $10,000 that can be afforded by schools, colleges, corporates, etc.
A law school can buy a slice that has pages related to law only. They don't need pages devoted to linux, maths, etc.
What do you people think?
not related but still....Idea that can kill google

This is quite another thing that the whole Internet will take huge amounts of storage and hence may be only corporates can buy the snapshots. This will save time of their employees who spend atleast 10%-20% time on google.
I guess this will not completely replace existing technologies but will co exist. This is especially useful for remote areas having only one base station and there are many terminals not directly in the range of the base station. Its good to see this thing coming out as I have my own version of mesh routing protocol that I wrote for my master's thesis in 2003.
This will also allow a community to have some sort of local network without any wires and you can play online games or chat with your neighbor without having to buy an internet connection. I think these softwares have to be modified for using the mesh network and not try to find an internet server if there is no connectivity but just a LAN on mesh network.
Or go to India - with the state owned BSNL you pay -
$0.025 per minute for anywhere in India
$0.0005 per minute between BSNL subscribers
$.125 per minute for calls to US from India
US cell phone industry is still in dark ages.
