  1. Re:Cross platform on Write Portable Code · · Score: 1

If you're using those platforms then you deserve to be left in the dust. 99% of the world uses Windows, OS X, or some form of *NIX. It's easy to write platform intependent programs in C++, just as long as you don't use a GUI. Actully the best way to write platform independent code is (if possible) write the engine in ISO C/C++ whatever your favorite language is, then write a GUI client for each OS you wanna support, that interacts with the main engine of the program, which is platform independent.... Or just just Java. (That was a joke) ;)

Here is a crazy idea. How about when they auction off the analog tv spectrum to the highest bidder, then he/she/corporate entity turn around and continue to offer analog television be broadcast on this spectrum. It would work if the broadcasting stations all decided to defy the FCC. Just imagine how pissed off everyone is going to be when they are "forced" to upgrade to HDTV because big brother says so. Most people out there right now have no idea that they will have to switch by 2009 if they want to continue to watch broadcast tv in the US. (By the way that date has already been pushed back 3 times) Lots of people can't afford the HDTVs that are available today. Even the CRT ones currently cost $700 just for 27" displays. Lots of families own mulitple TVs, and they will all be obsoleted by 2009, good for watching DVDs and video games only. If you can't tell, I'm not a big fan of federally mandated changes in broadcast standards. BTW I know NTSC sucks big time as far as standards, but that's not the point here.

Before I get flamed on this, I just wanna point out that there is a big difference between being an advocate and being a fanatic against Microsoft. Now you want to tell people not to use MS because the corporation is a pig... ok fine. I can agree that Windows is a poor operating system because of all the patches and the fact that it is based off of DOS, instead of a rock solid, open solution like *nix. That said, do you really expect your average user that "Just uses MS Word to edit lists, or if the list has two colums, use MS Excel" to have any clue about using Linux? Granted that in recent months the Linux world has gotten mush easier to handle, for example Ubuntu 5.10 installs like a dream, with 3D acceleration supported out of the box! But to your average user in general, having config scripts everywhere is just not reasonable. Linux is not ready for the masses. Sorry. Not yet anyway. On the other hand you have Mac OS X, which IMO is a much more viable, and even preferred solution. "It just works" is so true. When you have the prettiest looking user interface of all time, and you build your own hardware (don't have to worry about drivers) and write your own software to work on it, not to mention a rock solid *nix base that's easy to use, then you have the perfect computing solution. Everybody is capable of running a Mac, and it has the perfect mix of *nix to make the geeks happy, and eye candy and functionallity to make anyone happy. OS X is your winner.

There are legal and moral issues associated with DRM. If you paid for a song legally, then you should legally be allowed to listen to it anywhere you want. I know the ToS says otherwise, but that is crap. This is America, and when you buy something for your own use, you are allowed to personally do whatever you want with it.
