Linux hasn't 'failed' on the desktop... it hasn't succeeded yet. Things are still getting to the point of Linux being (average-)user-friendly in general.
People seem to forget that this namby-pamby 'childhood' idea is only a recent invention in and of itself. Look at the Victorian era for an idea of what I mean.
Mattel would do a lot better by buying Scrabulous, hiring these guys, forcing them to fix the bugs, and turning it into an in-house Scrabble app.

The problem with phone-to-phone videoconferencing is that the camera is stuck on the back of the iPhone.
