What we need to do is take the money from these people that have so much of it to frivilously throw away and redirect it to more worthy causes like educating our children or feeding the hungry.

Better yet, put another 300GB drive in it and DON'T use RAID. Just setup a cron job every 6-12 hours or so that runs rdiff-backup against your source drive and backs it up to the spare 300GB drive. You'll have the benefit of version control and an identical copy of your source drive's data all online at the same time. Why is that important? Ever done rm -rf /archive accidently? Probably not, but it only takes once and voila.. your 300GB RAID-1 setup is toast and you're looking for file recovery software. If you really need more granular backup than that then setup special directories that get backed up every 10 minutes or something and put important stuff there. Everything else can be backed up once a day.

I can understand them using CSS to encrypt the DVDs to prevent copying since that directly eats into their profits, but why should they care where you watch the DVD? If I want to buy anime directly from Japan why should I need a region-free DVD player to view it? Same goes for people in Europe buying the "American" version of a movie. As it says in the article, some people in the corporate world won't do it if the patch didn't come from MS. It's sad, really. If I had an exploitable machine around, I would trust their patch.

But you're probably coming at it from a different mindset. If you're used to open source software you probably regularly trust patches from people who you otherwise wouldn't know simply because they released the patch as open source. You probably figure SOMEONE out there must know how to read the thing to determine if it's malicious and would throw up a red flag if they found something.

With Windows users they're not used to that level of trust, even when it involves a patch that includes source code. How many Windows desktops do you know of that have Visual Studio on them to compile this patch from scratch to verify the binary version isn't malicious? Coming from a UNIX world, not having a compiler on your system just seems weird, but Windows users are trained to trust in their binary patches and cross their fingers.
