  1. Re:You can read the short story on Spielberg (And Kubrick)'s A.I. · · Score: 1

    Thank you!

This more than anything wetted my motivation to go see the movie.

I think the issues that this film could raise if it is even loosely based on the short story could be just as alarmclock'ish as "the china syndrome" was for nuclear power plants..

The question in my opinion is not when we will see true artificial intelligence.. it all comes down to when we will see "toys" smart enough to trick us that they are intelligent. People want to be decieved after all.
The passage in the story where the "mother" is talking to the stuffed bear really chilled my spine. I came to think about the way people talk to their pets.

Im looking forward to this picture.

    Thanks.

Actually the media here (Sweden) did a funny thing with this piece of "fact".

First .. they were all for earpieces, basically telling people that if you dont get an earpiece your kids would look like quasimodo.

Second.. they changed their collective minds and spouted that earpieces actually carried the dangerous radiation INTO your ear.. being that your ear is in your head makes an earpiece quite dangerous..

The latest word is that they basically dont know shit, which IMO was true from the very beginning...

    *sigh*

I know that this might seem horrific for the common *nix developer but there are lots of people now that have Visual Studio 6 as their preferred enviroment.

If we could implement COM objects we made on with VS on a linux server.. whooaa sweetness.

IMO Visual Studio is great for making programs fast, but as we all know nothing ms has can beat the server parts of linux/freebsd.

Shortly before the partnership between Napster and B was a fact the swedish media ran a story about how Bertelsmann denied their Nazi history.

Yeah it is a crime in Germany to do that.. I can dig up an url if anyone cares.

  7. A swedish story of telecommunications.. on The United States Losing "The Tech Edge?" · · Score: 1

It's funny that slashdot should bring this up today, the same day that my newspaper ( Dagens Nyheter 5 August 2000 page A2 ) brought me the short guide to history behind the swedish advantage on telecommunications.

1877 - Henrik Cedergren builds the first phoneline in Sweden for practical purposes from his fathers Jeweler store to his home.

1880 - Stockholm Bell (an american company) starts the first local phonesystem in Stockholm, Cedergren finds that their prices are too high and founds his own telecom business SAT (Stockholms allmänna telefonaktiebolag)

Mid 1880 there are over 5000 working telephones in stockholm, more than in any other city in the whole world.

Bell did not let Cedergren to buy their telephones for his company so SAT made a swedish engineer their main supplier .. Lars Magnus Ericsson

One hundred years later we are still in a top position.

And the cellphone changed our lifes again. Thanks to the monopoly of Televerket and Ericsson , both companies could develop in complete safety. Now we have the edge tho, and to keep the prices down we need more competition.

btw.. i am now about 300 meters from the house were Anders Celsius invented the Celsius scale for measuring temperature... another thing that the whole wide world uses, except the US.

    cheers!

That is one cool price-plan. Ericsson has a telephone that tries to do this .. it's a gsm phone but when you get home BAM its a DECT cordless phone. It's not at all as convenient as having that functionality in the cell system itself.

Hella Cool.. this is something i will ask from my local provider.

I believe that the other variety of this law (as proposed by EU) is the only thing that is reasonable in the long term.

Right now spammers are using lists of email adresses compiled from newsgroup scans and other automatic gathering techniques, however the ONLY way I want databases to get information about me is when i submit the info myself. Dont you agree?

I want a law that forces every spammer to use the official list only as their source for email adresses. And for that to be effective we need a worldwide agreement.

That's not too much to ask is it?
