Windows (XP/Vista atleast) can't be trusted with a swapfile, I noticed this the moment I put 2gig of ram in my system (years ago)... yet for some reason Windows still felt the need to page everything when only 500meg was in use. Now with 3gig and the problem hasn't changed, windows seemingly keeps as much ram free as possible, just incase it needs it... which it never does because its always paging everything :) Turn off your pagefile, reboot your pc and you'll notice an immediate difference in performance. as for FreeBSD, it doesn't appear to use it til its outta physical ram have a nice day

TV ruins imaginations, as well as memories and perception of the world... I've been watching some friends kids grow up over the past few years, the mother puts them infront of the TV all the time. They have short attention span, they have really bad memories and I doubt they even have an imagination. Sure the eldest is only 6, but by 5 i was typing basic programs into the C64 from the manual ;) And just to get back on topic for a second, my dad had "sex games" on the c64/amiga/pc for as long as I can remember. He never tried to really hide them from me, just assumed I didn't know what they where. But I played them from as long I can remember, I used to play strip poker 3 on the amiga all the time when i was 9. Personally I think it did me more good than hiding it from me... Most, if not all, of my friends have a strong sex drive, all the time. something which I don't really care about (I recall reading somewhere being exposed to that sort of material at a young age was meant to make you sex wild??), all of them had parents who did their best to hide sex from them until the schools taught it (age 12,15 here)

  17. Ha! you think you got issues on Vista Slow To Copy, Delete Files · · Score: 1

I *was* running vista on this machine here (inspiron 6400), I also noticed copying files is extremely slow, But the biggest problem I have is that the operating system is not stable! it constantly randomly locked up, no mouse movement, and caps lock wouldnt turn off or on... not only that after it did that it would do it on boot another 3 times on average, then sometimes when it would let me back into windows the SYSTEM process (nt kernel) would chew 50% of CPU time (dual core system) no apps open and a hard power off is all thats possible when it gets like this (mutex lock i was thinking?) So you think slow copying of files is an issue... hahahahaha.. dream on ;) I also noticed the 2time i formatted, vista didnt install drivers for NIC, sound, wireless, video (x1400) or the modem... 1st and 3rd time it installed all of them. Whats more, when i decided i was going back to XP, it crashed 5 times while I was trying to copy my files back off it. The most interesting thing about this, is that it was stable for the first few days... and sometimes it would be stable for 24hours or so, then just start crashing again. It never seemed to do it on the same apps. Just another part of the Windows Vista experience! Thank you microsoft!!

Screen is great, another good use of it is when your remotely doing a compile and your internet connection goes down. Rather than have to restart the build, you just resume your screen session and the compile is either still going or is completed :) It's also good in the sense you can move away from the terminal filling up with lines and lines of files being compiled. Handy if your on a slow connection.
