Ok this is the third time i have posted in this article, and the reaso is this. I am SO SICK of people bashing Jon Katz. I used to believe that slashdot was a place where people actually came in with onpe minds and recognized a decent perspective when they saw one.
What is the big deal? If you think the article is too long, DONT READ IT. If you don't agree, its no reason to bash the guy personally. He's an excellent author in my opinon, as well im sure as many others.

AOL and Time Warner isn't all that bad Are you out of your mind? AOL coupled wiht Time / Warner will not only control what half the internets population sees in the media (AOL, Comuserve, Time/Warner Cable) it will also control what half the regular population sees as well (CNN, TIME, SI, etc.) This would be by far the worst thing that has happened since the creation of the free economy. It would be like taking a step backwards into the days of the Standard Oil Company, which realistically owned the United States with its financial might and influence. If this merger is allowed to take place, there will be no turning back. It would be over.
I don't think there's any need ot worry. I'm a second year CS up here in Canada.., Sure, our FIST YEAR class was twice as large as what it was 2 yrs ago, but by the second year 50% or more had dropped out. Just because you are brainy in science does not mean you have the skills to be good with computers... theres a big difference between a researcher and a programmer. You really have to LIKE CS to be good at it, and be good whne you graduate. Those who are just in it for the money are easy to spot, both by us, and hopefully, by companies.
This, IMHO, is an EXCELLENT comment... a moderation of stories would emable/. readers to discern what stories were really important. A system based on different schemes of sorting the stories on the home page could facilitate users who like the current system of newest stories at the top.
Would the release of the Apple source code emable a port to the X86 platform? Sure, we all love linux, but from a GUI standpoint I'd rather use the MacOS over M$FT any day. Also, could it be possible to create an X WM based on the Apple source??
I ahve and idea.... why dont WE all sue Etyos with supid things like "not allowing access to the site for blind and deaf people" or "the animations on their site gave me a seizure" or "I did'nt get my package on time and it ruined my life" (the last of which I am sure we can find someone who did'nt get their package on time this christmas)
I sent a nasty reply to this paper for screwing the facts up, id suggest others do the same. I hate when major sources of informatin to the uninformed public get evrythig wrong like this.
They say that the only reason they cracked the encryption was to facilitate piracy. No mention of Linnux software support was made. How sad.
If there was any possible way of gewtting to CA today (short of selling my soul), I would. But, unfortunatly, i am but one of the masses who live nortyh of the US border, yet know and understand that whatever these nimrods accomplish down there will unavoidable have an effect on our simmilar freedoms up here. Where can I contact the numerous organizations figting this sort of thing on a day to daY basis to show my support?
The author of this article needs to learn a BIT more about trek. Firts of all, Star trek, ESPECIALLY TOS, which this guy touts as being so perfect, was never "money in the bank". It was almost cancelled nearly every month of its 3 year life due to poor ratings. It did not gain wide popularity until it hit syndication. The same thing happened in the first few seasons of TNG. Secondly, this will not be the first time since 93 there was only one show on the air. for al least 6 months, DS9 was the only new trek you could watch, following the end of TNG. And i remember when TNG went off the air everyoe was also saying "this is the end". Sure, they may be running sort on ideas, but if i know old Rick B, hes got something interesting up his sleeve. As long as he can keep the suits up top convinced its worth the effort, Rick will try to keep Roddenberry's dream alive. ---Software si like sex... its better when its free-----
Well if anything is worth me taking my hands off the keyboard for awhile, it will be this show Too ba di dont have a TV tuner card or I could read/. and watch it at the same time =) Ahh well someday =)
I agree. Simply because the human has arisen to become the dominant form of life on the planet, what does this have to bear on the overall scheme of intellegince? If machines can and do someday become intellligent, and do indeed surpass human intelligence, it is very unlikely that they will have all the same archetectures in place, and are smarter just because they are faster. Forget machines, who know swhat other forms of life are out there, posssible more intelligent than our own. Who knows how their brains process information?
Who said anything at Russia being communist? Actually, i see no mention in this entire thread of Russia up until you said it

Off topic i know, but where is that quote from?
I find it quite interesting, profound, and perhaps prohpetic.
