I agree, 4 digit PIN's are useless. I know on one of my bank accounts my PIN is 12 digits (the maximum possible), but at my other 2 accounts 4 is the max! What is with these banks? Just because some people have trouble remembering more then a 4 digit PIN doesnt mean I do. Why, in this world of ever-increasing HD space is the maximum normally 4 digits? This astounds me.

I still can't understand why these companies would be upset at getting MORE viewers. Surely server logs could be monitored, and doing such you could find out accurate numbers of what percentage of the population was watching your program, as opposed to those outdated neilsen ratings.

Also, whats the big deal if people rebroadcast your material? As long as it's live and not recorded, I don't understand what they're all up in arms about... all their gettig is more viewers = more advertising.

As a side note, i plan to start streaming TV as son as i get a faster Internet connection so NBC WATCH OUT! IM STEALING VIEWERS! :o),/p>

  5. Evolution of Consciousness on LonelyNet (Part Two) · · Score: 3

I agree with this study in it's premise... that the internet is physically isolating people, causing them to exchange their ideas in a virtual forum as opposed to a physical one (think a slashdot thread as opposed to a town meeting). What I don't agree with is that this is, or will ever be, intellectually ,emotionally, or socially damaging to us as a species. The basic premise behind the Internet is the exchange of ideas and information. Throughout history, mankind has striven to reach the goal of ultimate communication with each other. the Internet is the culmination of those efforts as it exists today (yesterday it was the telephone, before that the newspaper, etc).

Of course, old-world pundits will be frightened of this sociological change, as they always are whenever a paradigm shift in communications comes along. I however, believe that this is a precursor of things to come. Perhaps eventually, ultimate communication will be reached... through an evolution of human consciousness beyond our physical bodies. Weathe ror not this will be into a non-corporeal form of some sort, or will exist as brains linked into a global "cyberspace", who knows. but eventually, it will happen. And no amount of scared old-worled idealists will be able to stop it.

Perhaps this will cath their attention... Maybe things like the Fox flash page, frivolous lawsuits, etc. will be diminished. Or not ;) I'm not saying this kind of behavior should be encouraged, or if it is even accceptable... it IS very poor advocacy. I'm just saying, i think i know where these guys are coming from... "Any use by which you buy it at a price. It's like saying is there any other way you can get into a movie theater without buying a ticket. The answer is, you can sneak in, I suppose. But is that right? And if somebody says, 'You're interfering with my freedom of speech and freedom of movement. I just want to go into your theater but I don't want to pay any money for it' -- the absurdity of that becomes quite apparent. I'm baffled by some of the people that have written me [laughter] rather angry e-mails that I'm interfering with freedom of speech, and I'm a Luddite, and I'm trying to hold back the tide like an awkward king. I don't understand that. Because it literally makes no logic, no sense."

Isn't buying a DVD at a store and wanting to play it under the Linux OS "buy[ing] it at a price"? This guy is clueless... He totally skipped the implied question and turned the whole thing over to piracy again.

I believe that the root of this problem lies with the fact that most of the geeks on /. are quite intelligent, but spent most of their free time with computers in years past, as opposed to people such as me who read quite a bit and watched alot of documentaries / newscasts on television. The main reason I have stopped doing so recently is because I am too fed up with the singular non-technical point of view I get in the mainstream media. /. , at least, ackgnowledges its stereotypes and biases openly, as opposed to some larger media organisations who attempt to hide behind a veil of impartiality which just isn't there.

I personally feel that Katz is a much needed person here at /. If you REALLY have that much of a problem with him, the awnser is simpe.... don't read the articles.
