they arent talking about crop plants spreading, they are talking about weeds spreading.
and you also assume that people will have a choice as to whether to buy GM crops or not. perhaps you have heard of the eeconomic phenomena called monopoly.
like saying 'people love cars better than trains, busses, or subways', when many people live in a place where there is no train, bus, or subway, because car barons purposely eliminated those alternative forms of transit (like in los angeles). go read a history book.
a peer reviewed journal article explaining why the plants have resistance to certain herbicide would be alot more convincing than your (obviously biased) opinion
"I don't know if it's just coincidence or if they are related," he said. "It's very hard to prove this scientifically, but it's just as hard to disprove it."
considering linux is run by a 'benevolent dictator', and if linux were a city there would be 15 differnet fire departments, 12 police departments, 3 different road departments, and evey mile or so you would have to start driving on the opposite side of the road 'because it was simpler to build it that way'.
first of all, software engineering is sort of an infant field. you pretty much need to teach yourself. there are a lot of things that schools could be teaching about this but they just arent there yet.
as soon as there is a software engineering exam / certification, like there is for mechanical engineers, petrol engineers, aerospace, electricals, etc, i dont expect the situation to change. and no, 'redhat certification' or 'cisco certification' is not equivalent to what mechanical or electrical engineers have to go through to become certified.
furthermore, computer science at university needs to stick to things that are timeless and big picture. P, NP. ethics. mathematics. turing machines. theory of computation. psychology & machine interaction.
here is why.
industry will always want people to know the latest and greatest language. that is just so industry wont have to spend any money training people, buying them books, letting them learn the language on company time.
however, 5 or 10 years down the latest and greatest language will be long forgotten, as happens with most latest and greatest gizmos. and if all you learned at university was the hot new language then you are going to be in deep poo poo.
but in a good computer science course, you are going to develop yourself to such a level that you can pick up almost any language in a short period of time. every semester you will have to learn a new language, not just to learn the language, but in service of some broader purpose, such as learning data structures, learning the principles of compilers and how they work, learning how databases work, writing web pages for your courses, etc etc etc.
now go to the job. they hired you because you knew java. all of a sudden 2 years later a bunch of stuff is going to be using python and javascript. do you have a problem with that? if all you learned in university was java, then you will. but if you learned the basic principles behind languages, and behind how computers work, then you will have far less of a problem.
obviously the communists have invaded academia again. this and that whole 'socialized freeway system' thing are worse than when they stopped teaching about jesus in engineering school
1. our government is representative of money, not of me or of most ordinary slobs in the country.
2. lots of police are federal employees. ever heard of park rangers? the FBI? border patrol?
3. police have to kill sometimes too. its part of their training. but they do it in a legal system, where they have to pay if they kill innocent people.
4. if u are a proper right wing nutjob, then doctors who do abortions are also 'trained to kill' on behalf of 'society' and representative government.
im still trying to figure out why soldiers are 'different'.
just because you had a job where you can get killed doesn't make you special. lots of people get killed at their jobs, and lots of people risk their lives every day for others. the main difference is that most of them dont get medals or parades for it.
XP SP2 has better security features than any preceding version of windows. one guy 'fixing' 50 infected windows 2000 machines will cost so much in labor that buying XP would actually have saved you money.
people are really ignorant about why NASA got funding in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
sure the astronauts visit schools and tell all the kids to dream for the vastness and beauty of space.
nevermind that most of them were in the military before they got chosen for the space program.
the real reason the congress gave NASA money in the cold war was to put death beams on the moon before the godless commies.
unfortunately some people seem to have believed their own PR and think Nasa is a branch of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Arts or soemthing, as if its mandate is to give us cool screensavers via Hubble.
Hey, I would love that, but that is not how it got the money to go to the moon &c. America in its current state will not give money to something just because its a 'dream'. It's main purpose is warfare and violence as can be clearly seen from the national budget, the language of congress, popular entertainment, and the voting patterns of the people.
CUPS? lpd? recompile the kernel? download macosx compatability layer? rpm debian slackware? which version? which version of glibc?
open source is its own main barrier in this case
as an old physicist, he might have something to teach you about the relationship between science and society, and the responsibility of science. not just him, many other scientists feel the same way.
the minority, like you, will pretend you are innocent bystanders while whoever your employer is, nazi germany, saddam hussein, stalin, etc, perpetrate horrorous evil on civilization.... civilization on which your precious science depends for its very existence. science does not stand by itself, it lives by the side of all the other scholarly endeavors, none of which can exist or flourish in a police state to their full potential -- the reason germany did not have a bomb was precisely because they kicked out all their jewish scientists in the 1930s (based on the 'science of race' by the way, hows that for a nice use of science, and progress?) -- those 'objective scientists' staying behind in germany who turned a blind eye to the use of science for evil were left with a destroyed country and restrictions on their research and the murder of their colleagues.
science and progress have to be decided by someone. saying 'jews are evil' and kicking them out was considered 'good science' by the nazi science machine, who had all sorts of othe 'progress' done in rocketry, chemistry, etc. this 'jews are evil' branch of science ended up hurting all other areas of science, which ended up retarding progress. the point of this is that your thesis is not even consitent with itself. if your society is full of people who just follow orders, you are never going to have progress. you are going to have a society where people who would otherwise be contributing to progress are kicked out and excluded from society, which retards progress. your beautiful awe inspired world view doesnt even support itself logically - i thought you were supposed to care about logic?
'being harassed' does not make you right. being right makes you right. and i wonder how many times you have 'harassed' your 'enemies' for not being 'pro progress'? ? ?
first of all there were very few days between the two bombs. but second of all, it doesnt matter that they didnt surrender after the first bomb. 100,000 people never got a chance.
who knows what would have happened if we had demonstrated it publically to the UN or whatever. perhaps mass japanese protests would have toppled the fascist government. who knows. the problem is that we didnt even give them the chance. it wouldnt have taken much to give them that chance. most scientists wrote a petition asking that it be demonstrated first before being used.
people like you said 'to hell with that' and killed 100,000 people because you were pissed off. congratulations, thanks so much for advancing civilization.
university is not supposed to teach you Java or Linux. They are supposed to teach you P and NP completeness, Turing machines, User interface theory, algorithm analysis, teamwork, database theory, discrete mathematics, history, philosophy, civics, and writing and communication skills.
sorry, but the patriot act allows them to go to a judge, which is a lie, because the judge cant do anything. they just have to say 'this guys probably terrorist' and the judge has to say 'ok, heres my signature' and the judge cant say no.
do more research before you go off like this please.
seriously, tons of out of work folks out there. no they arent all gods gift to IT like you are. but you could teach them to do some basic stuff.
they arent talking about crop plants spreading, they are talking about weeds spreading. and you also assume that people will have a choice as to whether to buy GM crops or not. perhaps you have heard of the eeconomic phenomena called monopoly. like saying 'people love cars better than trains, busses, or subways', when many people live in a place where there is no train, bus, or subway, because car barons purposely eliminated those alternative forms of transit (like in los angeles). go read a history book.

READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE.
the moderators of slashdot!
there is 'good moderator', 'bad moderator'. in constant battle. it is a wonder their brain doesnt fly apart. lolly lol.
there are things that cannot be proven true or false in any system of logic.

at least that is the idea.
in this context mac OSX rm is not the same as the brain dead gnu rm.
mac OSX rm -rf / simply removes unneeded clutter from your disk, much as crapcleaner does for windows.
youd think a slashdot poster would have more knowledge. either that or the parent poster is a shameless troll.
obviously the communists have invaded academia again. this and that whole 'socialized freeway system' thing are worse than when they stopped teaching about jesus in engineering school
you have to have brains to understand something complicated like hypocrisy.
1. our government is representative of money, not of me or of most ordinary slobs in the country. 2. lots of police are federal employees. ever heard of park rangers? the FBI? border patrol? 3. police have to kill sometimes too. its part of their training. but they do it in a legal system, where they have to pay if they kill innocent people. 4. if u are a proper right wing nutjob, then doctors who do abortions are also 'trained to kill' on behalf of 'society' and representative government. im still trying to figure out why soldiers are 'different'.

its to promote an ideology, regardless of if it helps people or not.
wonderful. i think ill go download it right now, because where i work, i dont care if i help people either!

in europe. i dont think they want qualified candidates, i think what they want is small minded desperate slaves who will do whatever they are told.
