Warning, I AM affiliated with this company, but:
You might try these http://www.smartcuff.com/ potted & sealed, aluminum housed USB flash drives with a surface contact patch connector. They are billed as handcuffs for processing suspects in mass arrest situations (i.e. Riots), as well as evidence tags. This means you can drive over them with a Truck, drop them in mud, oil, water etc. and they will still work. As long as you don't lose the custom cable adapter.
We need to get those volvo driving NASA geeks out of the drivers seat and call in Cousin Clyde. Sure, he's used to driving a F350 with 10" lift and 32" mudboggers, but hell, just tell him it's eight wheel drive and there's a case of PBR in it for him. He'll have it unstuck in no time.
Why is this scored "funny" instead of "insightful"? How many of us scrap parts from one project to complete another? Building a predator/prey relational colony where prey is used for parts instead of energy is a valid concept. Imagine, rather, a robot colony that only has a finite number of "tools" such as manipulators, or vision systems. Robots "request" use of a device necessary to complete a task from another robot, and when it becomes available, they take it. The question being, will one robot end up with every tool? or will a cooperative arrangement of "specialists" evolve.
Google has arguably created a single source solution for probably 90% of what anyone does using the internet, and they have done it wil a (relatively) small organization. Grow that organization to the point that it can support/replace/overcome established applications and os's, and google will become the slow, lumbering behemoth that stand in the way of progress, versus being at the forefront of it. Faster Better Cheaper works in the software world, too.

We do. We just saw the election of one to President of Iraq.
