This is slashdot! Most of us already know that theres multiple dimesions. Time itself is a dimension.
It's more important to figure out how to best use each dimension. We have only mastered the physical dimension with little knowledge about the quantum world. Perhaps computers will assist us in the future to determine the functions of the other dimensions.
Communication is essential for work, education, and a lot of other tasks which in the future will be important. These people are going to need jobs, and I'm sure some of these people are programers or could be trained. People need to be given a way to communicate even if its just to contact their family, and people in the far future will need communications to survive.
The private sector IS in charge. I mean really if you donate to the redcross, what exactly can they do? Can they provide jobs? can they provide education?
People need the ability to work their way out of this. It's going to take a lot of hard work, not just donations to the redcross. So who is going to do the work? The private sector does the work.
I was not talking about just donations. Let private corporations handle the situation. Lets give these people jobs, not just food and water. Lets get some of them into college through sponsorships and scholarships to anyone who was a victim of this disaster. That is how you help.
Basically its coming down to a decision of the people. This is a moral issue moreso than a financial issue.
So lets discuss the morality of the situation. We should also discuss the financial impact. This situation has the potential to not only crash our economy but put us into a depression.
You are right, they need food, they need security, but they also need communication. They need access to the outside world, to the internet. I'd say that should be the number 1 priority. If they had internet access a while ago perhaps we'd have better been able to coordinate rescue attempts.
Dealing with armed criminals should be the easiest part. Are you telling me with all of laser guns and sophisticated technology we can't arrest a few criminals? How can we be so sure the government even wanted to rescue them in the first place?
A peer to peer wireless network would solve everything. If the entire city were connected to wifi, and the city installed an emergy network in which the city could communiate with every single cellphone or wifi device, and every wifi device could communicate with the city, msgs could be transfered in and out. Even if they just upload the msgs to the cities server and then they get forwarded online somewhere, the msgs would get out. People would be able to communicate.
It has been shown that dietary aluminum does not cause alzheimers, but that alzheimers leads to a buildup of aluminum in the brain.
This is like saying obesity causes diabetes instead of saying high blood sugar causes obesity AND diabetes.
This is like saying that tabacco products don't cause cancer, your genes do. This is like saying all heart attacks are genetic. You simply pass responsibility to the victim, its the victims fault for having bad genes. It's the victims fault for getting cancer. I bet if you were the lawyer fighting for Vioxx you'd blame the victims for taking the pill their doctors told them to take.
Corporations know their food causes cancer, they arent innocent. Corporations like Kraft LIKE killing people, its their job. They have been killing people efficiently for years, and its legal because you defend them by making it seem like its some accident that the french fries cause cancer due to how its heated. Well duh, learn a new way to make french fries. This is as silly as saying "Well if you smoke you deserve cancer!"
No one deserves cancer. Tabacco companies should be REQUIRED to release healthy products. If anyone can legally kill people by releasing poison food, well the nano technology is going to kill billions of people.
I know I won't be touching any of this nano food, I've learned not to touch ANYTHING processed and unless I can see its an apple and know what farm it came from I'm not eating it. The equation is simple.
Eat natural organic food and live, or eat processed food and die.
Consume organic products and live, or consume artificial products and die.
These are the options, live healthy or die young. So now we have to teach children to be paranoid about food. Kids growing up today wont even be able to try junkfood mainly because the junkfood only gets more toxic. Kraft will make foods so toxic that eating it once a year will give you cancer, and when this happens millions of loyal Kraft fans will die of cancer and society will connect the dots.
You buy from Phillip Morris and you die from Phillip Morris. You buy from Kraft and you die from Kraft. You buy the wrong goods from the wrong people and your health is sabatoged.
Since you refuse to believe its the food, perhaps its the pollution? SOMETHING is giving us cancer. To pretend that cancer is natural is like pretending heart attacks are natural. Everything we consume can give us cancer, all the veggies and fruits have pesticides, the water you drink has minerals and chemicals in it which can cause cancer.
If you eat 2lbs of healthy fat and 12lbs of veggies a day, you'll be healthier than if you ate 1 box of french fries per day from Mc Donalds. It's not how much food you consume, its what foods.
Calories arent bad, the body needs as many calories as you can give it. It's the quality of the calories which make the difference.
"Engineering recipes, or source code, aren't the same as works of art."
I believe science IS art. Art IS science, and anyone who cannot see the connection most likely isnt neither a scientist or artist. Einstien's formula was art, his methods were scientific. Source code is art, the methods, formulas, and algorithms are the science.
When I listen to music I listen with the exact same critical ear and attention to detail that I give to sourcecode I'm reading.
Second, music is not a business, hacking is not a business, its an art first and a business second because all the elite programmers, hackers and composers were both artists and scientists. Bach was to music what Carmack is to programming and as Einstein was to physics. They used science to create works of art.
We need to promote sci-art. Mixing science and art.
The point isnt to win by "beating" the competitor. The point is to win by having a higher quality of life. If we compete ourselves into an early grave what exactly are we working for?
Profits are fine for the short term, but if you know you arent doing something sustainable its only a matter of time before theres no customer left to sell to, nothing left to buy, and what then? If theres no one to hire, or sell products to, and no new products to buy, whats the point of profits if you can't spend your money? I can understand if you want to spend money, but in order to spend money society has to exist and no, not everyone in society is your competitor. If you view it as everyone for themselves eventually our species will kill itself trying to kill the competition. Honestly, I'd rather see our species go into space, master nano techonlogy, create new life forms, create robotics, and make our lives BETTER, mor ENJOYABLE, LONGER.
The point is, if all you do is make a buck, eventually you won't have any customers to make a buck from because like the Tabacco industry you kill your sources of income. Sustainable businesses work to improve life for everyone. This creates economic stability, environmental stability, so that we all can get richer. When you compete in a survival of the fittest manner, you have more losers than winners, and eventually the winners become losers. so whats the point? We arent going to make it out of the nanotech age if everyone in the industry just tries to make a buck.
Saving the world is profitable. In fact its more profitable to save the world than to destroy it because the profits as sustainable over long periods of time.
If your business is profitable you wont require a billion dollars investment. Also, Google hires American workers, they page high wages, they treat employees exceptionally, and they love us.
It's called a cold war. Just like the war with Russia, and its started already. The problem is America is losing. Americans are so greedy and selfish that China has learned to exploit Americas corporate weaknesses to its own advantage.
Outsourcing? It's simple. People who support outsourcing are supporting the Chinese. China is already kicking our asses in the economic war. If you want to win the war with China, you have to win the economic war. There is about 0% chance of the war becoming a physical war because at this level, with this much money at stake, neither country will ever want to have a physical war, and America will not go to war to defend Taiwan just as China will not require physical war to take Taiwan. China will buy Taiwan.
And before people post saying I don't know what I'm talking about, here is an blog for you all to read. Thomas PM Barnett is a war strategist. Read his blog, do some research on the subject, and then respond to my post.
Thomas P.M. Barnett is a strategic planner who has worked in national security affairs since the end of the Cold War and has operated his own consulting practice (Barnett Consulting) since 1998. Recently, Tom founded a consulting partnership with two other outstanding individuals called The New Rule Sets Project LLC. America needs an enemy. American always requires a new threat if you havent seen the pattern by now. China is the only competitior left which makes them automagically the new threat just as the Russian communists were the threat.
America needs an enemy overseas to fight to keep America from fighting itself and commiting suicide. We need war as a way to allow aggressive Americans a place to vent. We need an enemy to give Americans something to fight, to keep the economy going, and to give people a reason to support global domination. If the Americans don't do it the Chinese will.
The point I'm trying to make is that capitalism requires constant competition to function. America = capitalism. This means America requires competition to function. The equation shouldnt be so difficult. Otherwise China will let us compete with our selves, watch America collapse, and take over. Then the Chinese will take over the world.
I think its stupid for any American to think that America can exist without a global threat when America has been fighting threats sinces the very beginning. We either fight the threats overseas or we will start fighting them here at home, and I'd rather it be overseas.
Lets compete with China instead of with ourselves.
Google plans to offer broadband over powerlines. Al Gore plans to help create the next internet, and bring internet TV to the masses with current TV. Apple plans to offer Itunes over the new internet, through Googles new internet based linux operating system.

Why not instead HIRE THE POOR. If you are a CEO and you run a business and you want to do something to help these people, HIRE THEM.
That is where you can start, if you are in the private sector. We need to gather CEO's who care, and discuss how to help on that level.
Communication is essential for work, education, and a lot of other tasks which in the future will be important. These people are going to need jobs, and I'm sure some of these people are programers or could be trained. People need to be given a way to communicate even if its just to contact their family, and people in the far future will need communications to survive.
While the victims don't, you seem to think that volunteers won't let victims use their laptop to contact their families? We need communications.
The private sector IS in charge. I mean really if you donate to the redcross, what exactly can they do? Can they provide jobs? can they provide education?

Can anyone really say the government is doing a good job in how its handling this situation?
Would you prefer these victims stay in the dome forever?
Basically its coming down to a decision of the people. This is a moral issue moreso than a financial issue.
So lets discuss the morality of the situation. We should also discuss the financial impact. This situation has the potential to not only crash our economy but put us into a depression.
Can we depend on the federal government? Should we donate or just let the private sector handle it?

How is writing code any different from writing poetry or composing music? Thats code too and people consider that art, why?

People actually do start companies to give stuff to the world. Have you heard of Alonovo?
Most serious people start companies for both political and business reasons. Helping the world is more profitable than destroying it.
Saving the world is profitable. In fact its more profitable to save the world than to destroy it because the profits as sustainable over long periods of time.

Google is bringing democracy to cyberspace. Microsoft has been dictator for far too long. What would a more democratic internet look like? What would a more free and open internet look like?
Apple releasing OSX for the PC, Google working on a Linux based OS, and now Google wants to buy the internet? How much do you want to bet that Google and Apple are allies and Apple has plans to launch its Itunes services over GoogleNet?
Buy as much stock in Google as you can afford. Tell every college graduate you know from MIT or Caltech to work for good, and promote Google.
This might be the one chance we have to bring democracy to the tech industry. Microsoft has been dictator for FAR too long.
