Look at your TV. How are game graphics going to get better on it. I applaud sega for making a vga box for the DC, I think after dolphin/psx2/DC the graphics on Analog TV will cease to improve. As for HDTV/Digital it will get better, but current HDTV isn't all that impressive(fast motion has plenty of compression artifacts). We need a vga-out on the new systems.
Back when Atari 2600 + Nintendo cost outrageous amounts, my friends family paid ~$5000 for what was a "decent" 386DX/33, people are a LOT Cheaper now, when was the last time an ok cpu(celeron 366) was under $60. Never. People will not spend ~$300 for a console, most people buy at three points, early adopters/enthusiasts $200, Johnny's christmas/chaunakua/kwanza present $150, Guy with $100 to throw at a fun game system. There is very little market for a $300+ system, Unless it can play DVD(2 layer too) as well as a real dvd player, remember the PSX2 might be jack of all trades, master of one, game playing.
Old Redhat(I think 2.0) had an X based install. It took lots of mem, and took about 4 hrs to copy 200mb on a 486, while 5.1 only takes 45 min. I agree X installers suck because they waste mem and resources, windows can keep its pretty installers to itself.
In my high school, they brainwash us every morning by playing a song entitled, "I'm Proud to be American", it goes on for 5 minutes, I'm feeling patriotic today
Linux m68k only runs on the 68020 and above(not many 020 machines can though), it cant run on the 68000 for the reasons you stated, hmmm wonder if you could emulate a mac plus on it:)
I would doubt it most ti calcs are powered by a z80 which i think is not 32-bit clean:) OTOH, the 89 is a much better calc than the 83-87s, its actually a 92 without the kewlness. Anyways maybye i'll convince my parents to buy me an 89
Is it really a separate disc, or a CD-ROM with less error correction(similar to a vcd/audio cd)? From what I read, it IS just a regular yamaha cd-rom in them. Also, would it be possible to run say an mp3 player written for the sh4 off a cd-r, Imagine 649mb of mp3s and a little player app and the DC could be the home mp3 player we all want, plus it's closer to the stereo than a pc. You probably would need to chip it(is it possible) to get it to read cdr tho.
I agree, my friend was getting a stereo for his mom and they were going to spend about $300 on the Aiwa you describe. I kindly showed them to more listenable components, A Pioneer Stereo Reciver, A technics cd changer and a pair of jbl bookshelfs. Not too great, but its a lot better than the Aiwas Panasonics and sonys out there. On the subject of mp3s, they're ok for listening to casually, but not for if your really sitting to listen to music, personally i'd rather get minidisc, where recorder/player portables go for $200 and discs are $2 each and rewritable.
I disagree. I would like to know what amplifier/speakers you listen to your mp3s with. I currently use a Pioneer VSX-305 and a pair of JBL 500's. Using a recent version of AudioCatalyst for Windows(I'm a linux user mostly) I found that it seemed to cut out a lot of the music. I mostly use bladenc with grip and cdparinoia, but others say lame is better(never tried it) the xing encoder is damn fast tho.
Gimp is one of the best reasons to use linux, I don't see who would buy photoshop when gimp is so well done. I even have it on my windows partiton(the win32 gimp). Its a ton better than pirating photoshop. By the way, if you have the gimp that comes with redhat the 1.0.x versions, get the 1.1.x or 1.2.x(is it out?) versions, they are so much better, anyway Hurrah to gimp!
All of these 'set top boxes' should have ethernet, at the price of ethernet today(I picked up 2 SMC Etherplus PCI cards at a yard sale for $5) every box should have this, especially the dreamcast and other console games as well as the webtvish boxen. How much does an el cheapo realtek 8029 cost, like $2 its proabaly cheaper than the DSP modems that they put in there anyways
Unless TiVo could actually run linux as in bring up X or a command prompt, I really don't see the need for this "Digital VCR" I don't use my vcr that much for recording and the quality is ok. I would like to see a recordable device with dvd-like quality rather than using 240-line vhs(is s-vhs good enough) I could see it for older people who can't program their vcr, but they're not linux type people anyway.
Did you try to strip the binary it was probably compiled with debuging information that will make it much larger and probably slower too. Also does mozilla support gtk+, I want it to 'fit in' with my themes, etc.
I'm going to replace the left side of my case with a sheet of plexiglass and put in some colored(blue and green) flourescent lights in it hooked up to a photodiode so they only come on at night/darkness. Then i'll rig up a pair of laser diodes to the hdd active and power lights. Any Comments, Mail Me.
I agree mp3s are good for burning onto cds, but I wish Sony or Sharp,et al. would make a MiniDisc "drive" that would appear as a normal fat filesystem on your ide chain but would take mp3s or wavs and encode them into atrac(sony's md compression) I can't see carrying a discman around with me and right now copying mp3s onto minidisc is inconvinient. Imagine another 74min of music for $2, compared to what $50 for 32mb flash for the rio. Sony would kill the mp3 players if they bundled this "drive" with a portable MD player for ~$250
I agree, one, or maybe even two of our beloved new game consoles IS going to fail. I doubt it will be sony because they have good marketing and a stronghold on the japan market. I also doubt it will be Nintendo with their dolphin because their products aren't usually prone to failure, except the 64DD and Virtual Boy. Sega, I'm just not able to tell, the DC seems nice and all, but the Saturn was pretty competitive against the PSX1 for a while. But three of the biggest gaming companies against a SOFTWARE company seems like a battle MS can't win, although people probably said this when a consumer electronics giant(Sony) brought out PSX.
You don't need linux to cheat on a test, The calc itself with a few programs could do it.

My friend wants to run a web server off his ti-83+ calculator. I guess he'd have to write tcp/ip for it using slip over the graph link :)
Grip has an option to encode 2 mp3s at once, using 2 processes, one on each cpu, that is if you rip faster than you encode

So that's why my car cd player loading motor doesn't work and I have to push cds in with another cd.

We need 3rd party support by manufacturers for products that they sell to make linux more profesisonal

I have a MS Mouse 2.0 with a penguin on it, am I a hypocrite?
