    Impressions:

    [2] click Mozilla.exe --> open browser == 11 seconds. Cool.

[3] Moving my mouse along the pull down menus, considerable lag when I hover over bookmarks (prolly from the 985 bookmarks:).

[4] Pulled down QA and loded the smoke tests. all OK.

[5] Loaded the aphrodite skin. The GO button is a few pixels to low on the tool bar but, It all works well.

[6] Loaded the Sullivan skin. The back ground color looks like something changed. M15 has a darker grey than the background on the buttons.

[7] Loaded xml.com Alert: "the connection was refused when attempting to contact adforce.imgis.com". There's a dialog for every time an image doesn't load. had to press OK 8 times.

[8] Fast...ohmygod fast. Loaded the Jargon file v4.2.0 Jargon.html file from my local drive (2.16M) and saw it on the screen in less than 2 seconds!

[9] Clean interface, standards compliant, and ohmygod fast.

A mason respects a solid foundry. A pilot respects a well built plane. Each person respects the work done by others in a related field, but may lack an apreciation for things they don't understand.

Some programers may view music as a series of acoustical waves combined in such a way as to elicit an emotion. Some musicians may view programs as a bunch of buttons on a screen combined in such a way as to get a task done. While both are technicly correct, each fails to see the art in the other, and thus, they lack the respect that prevents copying.

You bring up a good point, regarding Star Wars and the release date. My intention was to show how and why the media dubed it "star wars" instead of SDI (Strategic Defence Initiative). I may be off on when Star Wars was at it's peak, but I'm sure about it being a Reagan thing. He even showed animations of these little lasers in space shooting down enemy MIRVs as they came down. History has shown it to be a driving force behind getting Gorby (the Russians) to the table to negotiate and is a classic example of (successfull) dissinformation on the grandest scale.

B)They want to do this stuff in the future.

If it is A, I'm reminded of president Regan and his use of "Star Wars" technology as a negotiation tool. For those to young to remember, when the Star Wars movie was at the height of it's popularity, the president went on national television and proposed "laser beams in space" to intercept long range balistic missiles before re-entry, and deployed billions into fruitless research. Of course, at the time none of this was even in the relm of possibility, but the russians didn't know that.

This forced the Russians to funnel enourmous funds into similar (impossible) research in order to assure their people that they would be safe. In the end. the Russians (Gorby) came to the negotiating table begging the US not to deploy the system. This proved to be a wonderful negotiating tool to ask the russians for concessions.

If it is B it forces other countries to move funds into pursuing a "global network" to try to match these capabilities (that may just be pie in the sky dreams).

I've been using a PalmV with 8M of storage and I love it. To answer your question about content, the answer is Yes, and a lot of it.

First of all, I synced my Palm with our companies mailing list and it slurped up all 5498 contacts (addresses, names, details about each acount) with one push of the sync button. Very kewl

Using AvantGo (www.avantgo.com the software and service are free when you buy the thing) When my PDA is synced with the desktop, it goes out onto the net and puts the sites I would like into the avantogo browser for later reading. There are some sites with spacific content dedicated to the Palm screen, but even if the content isn't optimized for the small screen, avantgo does a good job to make sure the page "degrade gracefully" so that the content is still viewable.

One of the nicer things is you can add whatever website you would like to view. Using this feature, we now have a team of salesman who, on their drive into work, can be more educated and informed while they make phone calls (they used to have to wait till they got to the office to get answers).

I'm not even mentioning the wireless modem from OmniSky or the many choices for GPS. In short, 2 thumbs up!

Q: What is the range of Bluetooth transmitter/receivers?

Bluetooth is designed for very low power use, and the transmission range will only be 10m, about 30ft. High-powered Bluetooth devices will enable ranges up to 100m (300ft). Considering the design philosophy behind Bluetooth, even the 10m range is adequate for the purposes Bluetooth is intended for. Later versions of the Bluetooth spec may allow longer ranges.

Given the range limitations noted above, I find it doubtfull that bluetooth can be employed as a wide area access solution. I think bluetooth will be a replacement for the IR port, and may help get rid of the sync cradle, but it is hardly a "confirm the-fedex-shipment-from-the-back-of-a-cab" kinda thing.

These new products could contain all the technology necessary for direct wireless communications, or they might contain Bluetooth chips.
