I really hate games and interactive working-with-other-students approaches in the classroom. I find it to be a copout by the professor; he or she is the one with the knowledge, not my fellow students (who are likely to be less knowledgeable than myself). Knowledge!=Understanding
If i had mod points i would have modded you up. This was the thing that ran through my mind when i read the summary. How was she at her job? Was she good? Not whether she had a piece of paper that claimed that she could be good at her work.
Of course, she has no other option but to resign. After all she did lie.
pre-dead Then how do you know if a person who hasn't been born was actually alive 2 minutes back and walked in to this monstrosity right before your eyes and became pre-dead? Seems like the Universe covering up it's tracks well.
The complexity is unfathomable. I have found this level of complexity in only one other universal entity.
Then use BSNL. No one is locking you in to Airtel. I bet what you are having is an unlimited plan. And what you want is unlimited high speed plan. Capped bandwidth in India will be here for a long time.
The Govt is saying that they will offer 2Mbps connections free and that definitely does not mean uncapped bandwidth. And i feel its a fair start. I am using a 2Mbps connection with bandwidth capped at 20GB/Month. Hey i am happy!
And for those who think India is better of feeding it's starving masses, i got two words for you - Buzz off. The problem is not food, each and every year we have surplus of food stored and wasted in our granaries. The problem is one of gross mismanagement and general apathy. And there is only one thing that can cure this, it is not producing more food, its the information of these mismanagements that has to seep down to the layman who if at all have any source of information is usually a politically biased news channel (owned by the local parties) or ideologically biased news channel (promotes only one side of an issue exclusively), or monetarily biased news channel (promote anything that sells,a prince stuck in a well sells, but thousands dieing of starvation doesn't).
We have enough, we just let it go to waste. The solution is not producing more, but removing inefficiencies in the distribution. And the only way for that to happen is information, two way free flow of information. I want an India where 90% of the people can connect to the net, can know in a couple of clicks what was the cost of laying the roads in their locality, or what is holding the concerned authorities from laying it in their area. We still have lots of people (Tamilnadu) who believe that a long dead actor/politician (MGR) is alive and political parties use this to dress up lookalikes to go canvas. You see its again lack of knowledge and information. No not specialised knowledge or cutting edge knowledge, but basic knowledge which can only be given cost effectively through a mass distribution/communication channel. And ill take the Internet any day to a news channel.
I am an Indian too. Just for the record i thought the jokes were funny. Come on we are capable of taking things in our stride and to laugh at ourselves.
Though i would have understood the jokes if it had been pronounced better, like in T for Tango, F for Foxtrot etc
Why do you think Google wont allow you to opt out. After all they already have the technology to handle the logistics of running ads on a million independent websites (Adsense). I bet if Google implements it, it will be a revenue sharing model. So maybe the schmuck who lights his fart can become better at....... uhhm farting?
I just wanted to add this. I am from India and i wanted to buy a PB 17" G4 from the US of A as it is cheaper there (it retails for around $500 less there). Around 50% of the auctions for that product was fraudulent.
Everytime i came across one, i would mail ebay about it. Till now i have mailed them claiming around 20 auctions were fraudulent. The fraud ranged from phished accounts to false feedback accounts.
I have gotten replies to 14 of them till now. And the auctions were pulled. Its been almost 2 months now and i still keep getting this warnings that if you have contacted (or been contacted from) this user please beware.
I think thats not bad. If you are going to go and bid on a item without even researching a little, then i guess the fault is a little bit yours. isnt it?
I mean this is slashdot, i would have thought most of the users would agree with me when i said Government is a institution created by the lazy and for the lazy. Laws for each and every aspect of how we live our life? That must be only because of people who are lazy to think how to live their life.
And yet i find people moaning about these things. I bet it is not that difficult to spot a fake from a original. Use your senses.Just because its online does'nt mean that you can stop using it!
And finally my views are that Ebay does not lack in intentions, but only in implementations.
PS: For those interested, i did buy one from US. But the problem has been Indian Customs. Currently we dont know where it is and i am in daily contact with the seller. If in case the Indian customs try to screw me over, i have already told the seller that i wouldnt mind losing a bit more money to ship it back to him. Of course i will be getting my money back minus the shipping. But hey it beats the customs duty here. And in my experience no one has been really as bad or as good as claimed to be. After all everyone of us is still a human (including people working for a corporate). So i am hoping that i can get the laptop with minimum hassle from the customs.
I am seeing all over the net a discussion on 302 Hijackings and that Google is evil.
But the thing is no one is discussing the actual cause of it. The actual cause is the HTTP Protocol that says EXPLICITLY
"10.3.3 302 Found
The requested resource resides temporarily under a different URI. Since the redirection might be altered on occasion, the client SHOULD continue to use the Request-URI for future requests. This response is only cacheable if indicated by a Cache-Control or Expires header field." - Emphasis not mine.
You can read it for yourself at http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10. html
Now we all know the importance of protocol. Its a communicating language. In this case the protocol was basically developed when the WEB was pure and unadulterated. Where people expected others to follow and not misuse the protocol.
But with money always comes greed and dishonesty. WEB originally was not built with Business in mind. It was for free Information Interchange. But it has just evolved to a state where Commercially the WEB can be harnessed (exploited whatever) for its potential.
So now any search engine that follows the protocol to the letter is in effect aiding the Hijacking, but is it the mistake of the search engine or the protocol? Unlike Human languages, protocols dont evolve uninhibited. If it did then very soon no browser can understand all the servers and vice versa. i.e you might need 10 kinds of browsers to access 10 different website, beacuse those 10 websites talk a different language. (Now come to think of it, is this not what is happening in the DRM world. You download music from one site and you can't play it on another without a hack).
That is the reason there is a standard and it gets revised every so often so that it can also keep up with the times.
So some of the suggestions like throw the redirecting page into the bin and keep the target page will really have web wide repurcussions for people who use it with the standard in mind and with a legitimate purpose. So you ask who uses it and for what purpose?
Let me give an example.
Ever tried buying from Amazon.com?
Okay how do you reach the homepage?
Well i type in amazon.com into my browser and i get the page. BUT the url at which i get the page is exactly now http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/home/home. html/103-7996157-2162261
Use this server header tool for understanding what happens
http://www.webrankinfo.com/english/tools/server-he ader.php
1) Enter www.amazon.com
It says
HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2005 14:38:22 GMT
Server: Stronghold/2.4.2 Apache/1.3.6 C2NetEU/2412

st/home/home.html
Connection: close
Content-Type: text/plain
So amazon.com doesnt exist (dont mistake me, the page amazon.com) what exists is http://www.amazon.com:80/exec/obidos/subst/home/ho me.html.
2) Now enter http://www.amazon.com:80/exec/obidos/subst/home/ho me.html in the box.
It says

So now the home page is temporarily at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/home/home. html/002-8272699-5270422

Replying to undo faulty moderation.
