Clan usually implies tighter kinship and closer relationships between members. Nationalism leverages feelings of clannishness and family to a broader group of people.
As I said, I see no substantial difference.
There was an attempt to form a Yugoslav nation, for instance, but that didn't work out too well after holding for a while.
Tell me about that... I'm Croatian by citizenship, Slovenian by nationality...
Here it failed because of too many nationalists... nothing more, nothing less.
At the heart of the attraction of nationhood is the simple fact that people with a great deal of cohesion and co-operation tend to steamroller groups that are divided.
Yes... I just don't see the attraction of steamrolling other groups. Then again, I've never been into team sports.
Frankly, if you cannot see that a goodly portion of the world has no desire to move forward, then you're purposely blind.
Of course I see that. I just don't like what I see... and I'm certainly not going to ask that part of the world population for some kind of permission anyway.
Fanatic Islam wishes to drag everyone back to 900AD. Not me, not my kids, and not my grandkids. You go ahead.
Oh, I'm sorry... don't you have something called the Bible Belt in the USA?
Idiot fanatics are not restricted to Islam in their choice of religion. Or nationality.
By the way, your last line is straw, as you well know.
Nationalism is the (so far) by far most successful attempt at binding people together for large-scale collective action ever concieved.
I really don't see that changing anytime soon. Destroying nationalism is most likely just going to shift the loyalty hierarchy downwards, back to clan and family - entities that are notoriously difficult to "move forward".
Well, sorry, I may be a moron, but I see no substantial difference between a clan and a nation.
Or a football[1] club, for that matter.
Nationalism cannot be "destroyed" - but it can be grown out of. Just as soon as people realise that many conflicts would be resolved more quickly if people weren't bickering like kindergarten kids about who started it.
Given the history of religions... no, nationalism will almost certainly never be destroyed. Or grown out of.
Except by the enlightened few.
The #1 complaints I've seen about Yahoo! is the ads. Aren't there ads on gmail as well?
Oh, right... indeed there are ads on GMail.
Took me a month or so of daily use to even notice them.
Furthermore don't you feel creepy when you realize its been reading your mail to determine what to display?
Oh, right... automated text processing, looking for keywords, matching that with their adwords... really creepy.
Actually, I've found it funny - nay: hilarious - on several occasions. For instance, I got a completely incoherent spam... and when I looked at the ads, I burst out laughing and took a screenshot: three out of four ads were about dyslexia.
So your friend - and many others with him have adapted. But ask any of them whether they'd like to get their hands back.
I know I would, in their place, adapted or not.
I had been actually thinking of posing the question: should Linux automagically guess my username and password during the install process? Because it's about the only possible improvement.
Still, most Windows XP users haven't seen a BSOD ever. Go ahead and ask them. See, Windows XP solved that.
I've almost seen a BSOD a few times.
It usually passes by so quickly before the system reboots on its own that I don't have the time to even see what caused the problem (nVidia's drivers, most probably).
China?
Nice comeback.

The ones intelligent, educated and reasonable enough to think on their own.
Not very many, in any case... which is why I proclaimed all this "idealistic rambling".
More like utopistic, really.
Yeah, I know... I was being sarcastic...
Terrorists and politicians are just symbiotes... feeding on people and their fear.
P.S. it's losers, not loosers.
Of course I see that. I just don't like what I see... and I'm certainly not going to ask that part of the world population for some kind of permission anyway.

Get another sarcasm detector; yours is broken.

[1] Soccer for you Americans.
Ah... you think I was proposing a world government?
Gods, no! It would be even slower and more corrupt than any of the governments we can imagine.
But I've found that nationalism can severely limit your perspective... even here, on /.
Couldn't we do without either?
Instead, you have a world to move forward.
Then again, who cares about the filthy foreigners, right?
Are you saying politicians and terrorists are somehow... cooperating?
Surely you jest.

Well, Microsoft has always had good hardware products... ironic, really...
But as someone or another noticed last time there was mention of Zune on /., Zune won't have the coolness factor iPod has. Or had.
And I, for one, don't know anyone who'll be excited over it.
Then again, no-one I know owns Microsoft stock...
... who cares?
Why would they kidnap ugly girls?
Or more simply, "emerge $software-of-your-choice".
Yes, Officer Crabtree would be proud.
Yeah, OK, you're politically correct. That's nice.
So your friend - and many others with him have adapted. But ask any of them whether they'd like to get their hands back.
I know I would, in their place, adapted or not.
Now if only I understood how to activate it... I looked for a checkbox - any checkbox at the head of any discussion, but couldn't find it.
Can anyone give me a clue?
Well, that's where criptography comes in... someone posted this link in response to a post of mine a few days ago... seems very interesting...
They cannot find the data if it's all covered with garbage...
Ah, I understand now.
I had been actually thinking of posing the question: should Linux automagically guess my username and password during the install process? Because it's about the only possible improvement.
Neither can they, it appears. That's why they had to release it all over again.
Twice.
What exactly do you mean by "is not automatic"?
Because it's the very first thing that's up and running when you install Gentoo... I don't know how much more automatic can it get.
Hmm... NexGen phising seems too... weak for that kind of thing...
Let's call it DyNaMiTe Phishing or something...
I've almost seen a BSOD a few times.
It usually passes by so quickly before the system reboots on its own that I don't have the time to even see what caused the problem (nVidia's drivers, most probably).
The system just freezes and reboots.
This is very interesting... both the criptography and the legal advice.
