Except they DID protect USB connection. Every Kinect has some crypto in Audio codec. Audio codec sits behind USB hub inside kinect. Its trivial to hack it in a way to make console thing its speaking with real kinect while it receives Audio data from real Kinect and spoofed VIDEO data from our device.
What they said is two very short quotes. Here, let me help you:
"With Kinect, Microsoft built in numerous hardware and software safeguards designed to reduce the chances of product tampering. Microsoft will continue to make advances in these types of safeguards and work closely with law enforcement and product safety groups to keep Kinect tamper-resistant."
The comments in this thread are ridiculous. Of course they meant to. This isn't some random project by 4 college dropouts. This is one of the most successful companies to ever exist.
Actually NO, That "most successful company to ever exist" spends $600 million developing kinect (developing means running around buying out companies like 3DV Systems) and writing skeletal reconstruction code (that has a 0.5second LAG, just try playing Adventures and then compare lag to Fitness that doesnt use skeletal code and doesnt lag at all)... and in the end used PrimeSense Reference Design because what they developed in house DIDNT WORK.
Seriously, this is the first thing I thought when I read aboutthe Kinect. Here is a box, wired to the internet, with a hundred little beams that can not only tell what you're doing, what the room looks like to absurd levels of detail. Talk about 1984-style, in-soviet-russia type monitoring.
Forget the advertisers, with enough of these things deployed the feds won't need those vans parked outside your house, they'll grab the data in real-time from either the ISP or Mircrosoft.
Can someone please explain what this Kinect thing is?
AFAIK it's a webcam with a "distance" channel as well as RGB (possibly also a temperature channel and noise cancelling mic, though I may be imagining those)
Sadly no temperature. Noise canceling done in software.
It's a couple of cameras coupled to some processing capability which makes it capable of human figure image recognition. Basically you stand in it's field of view and it looks at you and calculates with reasonable precision the positions of all your major joints. It's a posture sensor.
That's OK, they actually bought the technology like everything else cool they ever sold.
The thing is they didnt. Its merely a partner agreement between Primesense and Microsoft. Microsoft doesnt own a single bit of hardware technology that goes into Kinect.
And a lot of that profit goes to the over $200 million they spent to license and develop the technology. The plans didn't appear out of thin air.
Except they didnt develop "the technology" (structured light), they developed 40something points skeletal tracking algorithm that makes games like Adventures LAG 0.5 second on XBOX. They demoed this tracking even before talks with Primesense. They did buy our 3DV Systems that used Tof (tof camera had 0.5 second delay to begin from watching 3DV demos). They were hoping it would work, but it didnt so they ended up using third party Primesense.
You don't know its buggy until you've bought and played it.
Piratebay:
-moh I downloaded Moh, got stuck at the end of second chapter, googled and found 1000 posts long topic about this EXACT bug and no word about a patch coming ever. That was almost two weeks ago, looked again today and still not fixed. Deleted the game and told my clan mates im not gonna play moh online with them.
-Nev Vegas Downloaded, started the game and noticed tens of bugs from Oblivion and Fallout3 + some new ones (like mouse moving really weird in pipboy). Read some about the game (perception not making you more accurate? but pipboy says it does.. but it doesnt..) WTF. Deleted the game.
Microsoft's got hundreds of millions of dollars invested in visual motion recognition and speech recognition technology.
and yet they go out and use third party solution:) Its almost as hundreds of millions of dollars were wasted while small startup delivered what they wanted.
-Major feature of the patch (basically the only new one) got castrated from all but the bare minimum functionality because they couldnt meet time limits. -they introduced ~5 new, and reintroduced another ~5 old bugs -instead of fixing new/reintroduced bugs they decide to release PATCH version 1.1 with MORE new functionality/code rewrite cos that was in the schedule, and schedule is more important than quality... -1.1 broke so much people couldnt play at all -after 1.1 they released SIX hotfixes that didnt fix anything or broke even more -after that they decide to stop embarrassing themselves and released 1.2 instead of hotfix number seven, AGAIN instead of fixing bugs 1.2 introduces even more invisible to the player code rewrites
New expansion was on a test server before release, bugs were reported but AGILE forced timelimits meant NO ONE read bug reports:-) From that experience what Agile means for me is TOTAL lack of Q&A.
Unless the glass is breaking all by itself, I'm going to go with "people who spent too much money on a phone don't know how to take proper care of them."
phone is not a faberge egg, iphone is...
The first thing I did was slap a protective case around it and put on a screen protector.
ah so you are one of "them", driving cars with foil on car seats (they might get dirty you know), TV remote in plastic wrap, and so on
Chandelier part displays 40 fps on top right, but you can clearly see on the screen that its more like 15. Not to mention unimpressive difference between RT and normal renderer. I was expecting something more real life.
I think the 5 second adds are what companies should be aiming for in the current market
Lets call them blipverts!
Patents already got Mickey mouse. Just look at Rambus, constantly extending original patent.
Problem is, the band wants all 100 seats in the venue to be filled.
So they want money AND free advertising? See, thats the problem right there.

He meant T6 and T10 Torx screws

Why would they? 3D will be a big selling point of the _next_ version of windows. Just like DX10 was suppose to be with Vista.
"What can we, mere peons, do?" you might ask.
Form the resistance. Decapitate senators that voted against people. Worked for France during the revolution.

Just like the movie Antitrust, but much worse.
All the interesting processing.
you mean all the slow skeletal reconstruction lagging 0.5 seconds behind video feed

Nope, what you described is done in software.

On the other hand I still play cod4 to this day.
PrimeSense system had originally had built in depth processing on the chip
This _IS_ the original reference design, with processing done in asic
, and that was planned to be included the project Natal, but at the end MS decided it would be too expensive and moved processing to CPU.
M$ didnt decide shit, they are using reference design, depth map is streamed to the Xbox.
Of cause that caused lag. Though I've read in the latest versions they had reduced lag considerably.
So there is Kinect V2.0 somewhere already?
Microsoft's got hundreds of millions of dollars invested in visual motion recognition and speech recognition technology.

Will be rather hard, considering the processing happens on the CPU of X360
no it doesnt, unit streams "camera" data with color values representing depth

Im sorry, but we are talking about math and you are using those funny units no one understands. Even funnier that you mention Nasa.

it wouldn't run anything newer than IE5 or Safari 2,
Opera
said Digicel's billionaire president
hence Digicel's $4.3 billion debt
and it looks like Chrome was the only browser not syncing to screen refresh
