Yeah, when I am being raped in political prison because of the next-generation of this thing, I'll say, "At least Hugo is taking my man-cherry as a result of Linux." *Thumbs up*
I've been giving a lot of thought to Dvorak's wonderfully creative suggestions to Apple. This one might not be as far off as his, "Let's put XP/Vista on Macs, cuz hey it's not THAT BAD"-nonsense (gasp). Especially since OS X was partly based on it anyway viz BSD.
I think Dvorak has a similar system as South Park's depiction of the Family Guy creators. He might have a dartboard or something with different story ideas and he just goes, in willy nilly random fashion to suss out the details of his next great suggestion to Apple or other companies who couldn't care less about what a dinosaur tries to suggest to them.
Or to put it more tech-appropriate; maybe he's written the Dvorak-Random-Story-Generator which uses the randomness in the noise of his clock to come up with story ideas. I don't know--anything is possible--like Apple switching to fully OSS software.
Yep, TOOL wasn't probably the first with this, but probably the best and predate these guys, thus defeating the whole novelty ("wow,-this-is-so-neat-because-it-hasn't-been-done -before") factor.
I wish people would sit on their research for awhile sometimes and that readers of these articles wouldn't read into buzzwords like "self-awareness."
1) What is consciousness?
Takeno, oversimplifies the definition.
2) Was the robot picking up on the fact that a mirror image is STILL corrupted information (which is remarkable in itself)?
3) Consciousness works on many levels and may have biological primitives we just don't understand yet. Seems appropriate to call this anything but a robot with better programming--not "self-awareness."
Einstein, much moreso than most of us, knew that prevailing models were insufficient to explain the universe's nature. We haven't a clue--maybe a better clue than 80 years ago--but close to no clue how the universe developed. But science is an evolving affair.
Furthermore, WOW, this post is really late and I am more and more convinced that people only read little blurbs on Slashdot rather than read the literature or...books. The COBE satellite and then the WMAP already suggested an anti-gravitational energy--several years ago.
Solar cells (as a viable alternative energy source) have all but been invalidated on the basis of their inefficiency. I would be interested in seeing the exact details for the thin film process in these solar cells since I have some experience in fabricating the silicon ones.
Touche. ;)

We'll have to wait it to see.
