Several of these "Top" companies have offices or HQ in my area of the country, MN. I have many friends and acquaintances that work at these companies (General Mills, Thomson Rueters, Medtronic) and rave about their job satisfaction. A telling sign is the turnover of these people is markedly low. Compare that to other companies in my area like Best Buy, Target, Accenture, or United Health Group. People I know in these companies almost universally hate the conditions and culture. Turnover is high. None of these companies grace this list.

So I guess my point is by my small, non-scientific, anecdotal sampling, this list is accurate enough for me to start looking at the job postings of these companies.

As a web developer, I agree MS has been awful at standards compliance up to and including IE6. However, they are steadily improving. I find it much easier to get a site to render properly in IE8 than in previous versions. Their recent Acid test scores support this:
    • IE7 passes Acid1, fails Acid2
    • IE8 passes Acid1 and Acid2, fails Acid3 (21/100 for me)
    • FF3.6.3 passes Acid2, nearly passes Acid3 (94/100 for me)
    • Opera and Chrome pass Acid3

Passing Acid2 was the big one for me. This makes sense, as Acid2 focuses on basic CSS compliance while Acid3 focuses on more cutting-edge web tech, per wikipedia.

  12. Re:Better: Police Presence on New Speed Cameras Catch You From Space · · Score: 1

I disagree that police officers are the better solution for enforcing speed. Here are a couple of reasons:

    1) If there is a pull over (of someone else) during rush hour, it doubles my commute due to the gawker slowdown. This happens to me frequently. Not so much for enforcing speed, but for enforcing the carpool lane (which also should be done with cameras, IMHO)

    2) If Chief Wiggum is sitting in the median waiting for speeders, he is not adding of the benefits of a patrolling officer. He is simply a less-efficient replacement for a camera. So if there are cameras, he can be left to actually protect and serve. Unless the only reason he was hired was to garner speeding tickets. hmm....
