  1. same topic, from Salon.com on ABC/Disney Shuts Down Blog Exercising Fair Use · · Score: 1
While this isn't perfectly recent, here is an article from Salon.com that talks about the kind of things Melanie Morgan and Lee Rodgers from radio station 560 KSFO in San Francisco are spewing: http://www.salon.com/opinion/conason/2006/07/14/me lanie_morgan/ (ad movie-required warning)

Below is the text of the article:

Electrocute Bill Keller! No, hang him!

The moronic hosts of GOP-connected radio station KSFO get big yuks calling for "traitors" in the press to be killed -- all brought to you by Disney.

    By Joe Conason

Jul. 14, 2006 | While Melanie Morgan debates with Ann Coulter about whether the executive editor of the New York Times should be killed by gas chamber or firing squad, the institutional forces behind the San Francisco radio host deserve to share in the national spotlight now focused on her. Morgan's brand of authoritarian extremism is brought to her radio listeners every day courtesy of the Disney Corp., which owns KSFO-AM -- a station that functions as a mouthpiece and fundraising mechanism for the Republican Party.

Through KSFO and Move America Forward, a right-wing nonprofit (and "nonpartisan") organization that she co-chairs, Morgan enjoys an extensive network of connections in the Californian Republican Party. The founder and "chief strategist" of Move America Forward is noted Republican consultant Sal Russo, whose firm has represented a broad spectrum of GOP candidates around the country over the past three decades.

Started as a vehicle for the recall of California Gov. Gray Davis, the group has pursued such disparate causes as discouraging theaters from screening Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," promoting the confirmation of United Nations Ambassador John Bolton, promoting happy news from Baghdad -- and, last December, launching an ad campaign to persuade Americans that Saddam Hussein really did possess a hidden arsenal of weapons of mass destruction.

For a commercial radio station, KSFO maintains an unusually close relationship with the local Republican Party. The station's Web site links to Political Vanguard, which is operated by Contra Costa County GOP chairman Thomas Del Beccaro. Both his site and KSFO feature a series of party fundraising events, notably a gala hosted by Morgan herself and an upcoming speech by Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund. (Perhaps Morgan will take the opportunity to harangue Fund about his traitorous Journal colleagues, who also published the story about the financial tracking of terrorists by the SWIFT bank consortium.)

Anyone wishing to purchase tickets to these KSFO-sponsored events is advised to make out a check to "Contra Costa Republican Party" and mail it to the party headquarters in Walnut Creek, Calif.

Morgan and her co-hosts at KSFO (formerly the home of hatemonger Michael Savage) are predictably thrilled by the attention she has received ever since she called for Times executive editor Bill Keller to be sent to the gas chamber (after a "trial," of course). To listen to them is to wonder whether they may have gotten a little overexcited about their newfound notoriety -- Morgan's daily program specializes in primitive politics, with aging frat-boy high jinks provided by male sidekick Lee Rodgers and another character known as "Officer Vic."

On June 27, following a news item about President Bush's denunciation of the Times story on financial tracking of suspected terrorists via the SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications ) bank consortium, Morgan sputtered, "Get 'em! Yes, hang 'em! Yeah!"

Two days later, her sidekick Rodgers became exasperated with the Associated Press for reporting that antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan and others had begun a hunger strike. "Why don't you dopes at the Associated Press do the world a favor? Commit mass suicide!"

    "Oh, Lee!" tittered Morgan.

  2. Re:GW is just a distraction... on How ExxonMobil Funded Global Warming Skeptics · · Score: 1

There are a LOT of issues in this world, and each of them requires a segment of the collective human attention. Each issue has its own niche, with its own specialists, thinkers, activists, and politicians working to help fix the solution. Global Warming is NOT a distraction from these issues, but rather falls right in line with them. IT takes its own niche of scientists, politicians, activists, etc. for it.

Overpopulation and food: There are scientists, politicians, laymen and organizations working to help feed people and figure out strategies for the next couple decades.

Electronic voting fraud:There are organizations like Blackbox Voting, the crews at HBO who created "Hacking democracy" documentary and politicians (yes, they do exist) who are actively dealing with proprietary voting.

Find peaceful solution in Iraq:There is a whole SLEW of organizations, politicians, diplomats and concerned citizens who are trying to work out a peaceful solution in Iraq.

Global warming itself has several dire consequences, and not just for our human-centric standpoint. It is important for the balance of the planet's biosphere. Also, it is possible to mediate global warming without killing human development: humans have enough technology to generate energy that does not require a century's old antique technology.

  9. Artificial generation vs natural generation on Newest Energy Source — Pond Scum · · Score: 1

The artificial generation of oil/coal you talk about is called biomass energy, i.e. energy from current-living plant matter. This IS renewable/sustainable energy.

I am talking about the coal that is currently powering America's electrical plants: coal mined from deep within mountains. NATURAL processes of making coal/oil in sufficient quantities to power America takes many eons. The carbon being released from the coal plants of this nation haven't seen the light of day for many thousands/millions of years.

With artificial generation of fuels from crops though, there is no issue, as the carbon is recycled from the air back into the plant in a fairly short amount of time. As you stated artificially generating biodiesel/crude oil/coal takes a relatively short amount of time, and that is why converting crops into fuel is environmentally friendly.

The issue though is finding a way to generate fuels from these plants that is efficient enough to yield the most bang for your buck, so to speak. Biodiesel is in the same arena as artificial coal ("bio-coal" if you wish), artificial gasoline, etc, all require some energy to generate. The amount of energy put in vs the amount of energy gained is what dictates which fuels will be most effective.

Natural processes simply cannot generate oil/coal fast enough to catch up with human demand, and thus creates an imbalance in the carbon cycle. However, artificially making bio diesel/oil/coal etc. from plants closes that imbalance and essentially works itself out.

  10. Fossil Fuel: MILLIONS of years. Biodiesel: MONTHS on Newest Energy Source — Pond Scum · · Score: 2, Insightful
What makes biodiesel renewable is the fact that you are recycling a net amount of carbon. Over the growth period of a biodiesel harvest (in this case algae), the plants would have absorbed about the same amount of CO2 that had been generated by the burning of the previous harvest. I.E: The amount of CO2 put into the atmosphere from burning biodiesel made from last years harvest would be recaptured by this years harvest, assuming the current harvest is of similar or larger size.

Burning fossil fuels creates a similar cycle in which CO2 in the atmosphere is absorbed by plants which then over an extordinarily long period of time turn into oil/coal. However, this process of plants turning into the black stuff takes millions of years, much much slower than the rate at which it is currently being burned. On the other hand, harvesting plants to convert to biodiesel takes only a handful of months (with crops/algae). The speed at which the plant matter is generated and the speed at which it is burned is much closer to each other, canceling each other out.

Also it looks like some games have more benefit from this than others. The article lists FEAR and WoW as the most positively effected while Counterstrike and Quake 4 as minimally effected. They list an example in TFA of an _expert_ FEAR gamer:

I [have] watched him repeatedly go into DM games and use nothing but dual pistols and own the map. Joshua saw distinct differences between his Killer and non-Killer sessions. He was easily able to identify his gaming session using the Killer NIC with confidence. One of the more notable things he conveyed to me was that his "machine was ahead of what was on the server." He explained this was allowing him to take shots and get cover before others had time to react to his presence. Joshua said the the onboard NIC felt the same as his machine at home, but the Killer NIC gave him a better experience in that it, "felt smoother with less lag kills." He went on to note that the overall reaction felt better and the Killer NIC supplied a smoothness of play he did not get with the onboard NIC.

These kinds of "professional" gamers could use a fancy NIC with lower times. Or if your Richie Rich and you need some extras for your already pimped out gaming rig.
