  1. This is good for Firefox....right? on HP to Install Netscape on all new PCs · · Score: 1

So they're basically installing Firefox on every HP, right? If I read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netscape correctly. Netscape 8.0 is Firefox with a facelift and it's distributed by AOL. Well I suppose this is a good move. It will boost FireFox numbers.

  2. A few points on New Round of P2P Lawsuits from Hollywood · · Score: 5, Interesting

From TFA: Hollywood lawyers are hoping that the fear of exposure will dissuade more people from trying to download movies for free online. "Internet movie thieves be warned: You have no friends in the online community when you are engaging in copyright theft,"

I love how the MPAA resorts to terrorism to get it's point across.
Terrorism - n. The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.

As with previous lawsuits filed by the MPAA and the Recording Industry Association of America, this round of cases is aimed at anonymous "John Does" identified only by their Internet addresses. The defendants' true identities will be sought through a later court process.

Translation: We really have no proof of who downloaded the material but we're gonna goto court anyways

  3. This should be interesting to watch unfold... on Bram Cohen to Release BitTorrent Search Engine · · Score: 3, Interesting

This should provide a good show to watch. I'm all in favor of Bram Cohen winning but he will definately face some fierce resistance and he knows. I'm sure they've had meetings about how they're gonna beat this. From TFA

This creates something that BitTorrent has until now lacked, which is a centralized node to target....But Navin isn't worried -- because the new search engine indexes every torrent it can find without human intervention, the company can't be held liable for results that happen to point to infringing content, he says. Lemley says that's probably right, at least as a matter of law: The Digital Millennium Copyright Act provides safe harbor for "information location tools" if administrators promptly remove links to infringing content upon notice by the copyright holder."

Also doe anyone have any technical details on how this works. I mean how do you index a torrent automatically. i.e. If I start a torrent how will the search enginer know?

  4. Wow.... on U.S. Firms Take on Australia's CSIRO Over Patents · · Score: 5, Insightful

Simply stunning. So a company actually holds a legal patent to a technology they invented and since the big boys (Dell, Apple, etc) don't want to pay the royalties they try to legally "break" the patent. Does anyone else see something wrong with this? I hardly see these companies as the victim.

  5. Is it just me? on The Register vs Groklaw: Who Gets It Right? · · Score: 1, Troll

    Shouldn't that be series?

  6. Re:Dear Apple on iTunes Store Available in Australia Very Soon · · Score: 1

Dear CaptainZapp You do realize that it's not up to Apple to set the DRM. I think they hate it as much as you do but they are at the whim of the Record Labels. So it's kind of a love hate relationship. You also realize that you can strip the DRM from songs downloaded via iTunes. You also know that you can convert your downloaded AAC files to mp3 and thus effectively removing the DRM. I hardly think you justify calling this music format 'crappy'. There is no need to thank me.

What the winner for this competition needs to build is a giant lego mech that smashes his competitors robots so he wins by default.

  8. Re:Now, this is an example... on Camel-Riding Robots · · Score: 2, Insightful

You act like those 18-years didn't sign up themselves. Nobody forced them to join the military. It's a decision everyone makes on their own. So please don't try to run that sob story on us. This country needs soldiers and it needs physically fit soldiers to meet the demands of today's wars. So please stop acting like it's a travesty.

  9. Re:The doctor is a cylon on Battlestar Galactica in HD · · Score: 1

Dunno why this was modded funny. Maybe I missed the sarcasm or something. If you're being serious I'd have to disagree with you. If he was a Cylon there would be no point in him having that 7of9 chick in his head. She's running his life. Not him.

  10. Finally! on Battlestar Galactica in HD · · Score: 1

This is great news. The rereleased Battlestar Galactica is one of the best series ever IMO. Second to Beast Wars (don't be hatin!) It's good that they're being broadcast in HD. The torrents floating around have horrible audio encoding and it will be nice to have the series in HD. =)
