That's why American servicemen pry AK-47s out of dead Iraqi fingers, and toss their M-16s in the back of the HMV. Drop the AK-47 in the sand, kick it around a bit, pick it up -- it goes "bang" every time.
Right. Are you talking outta your ass or do you really think this happens? I'm in the military and I can tell you soldiers in the sand box don't do this. Here's why. US Soldiers are trained to engage point targets, meaning make every shot count and hit as accurately as you can. They are trained from the ground up on this principle. Here is a breakdown of BRM (Basic Rifle Marksmenship) training.
AK's, while more reliable are much less accurate than the M-4's the soldiers use over there. Don't believe me, read this. Plus any good commanding officer would chew your ass out for ditching your weapon for an AK-47.
What is your ISPs policy regarding P2P and is it fair for them to put restrictions and conditions on its use."
Ummmm no. Absolutely not. If you're paying for your ISP, say for a 1.5Mbps download pipe then that's what you should get regardless. Since when was P2P technology considered "wrong use" of bandwidth? If they throttle your bandwidth to anything less then what's the point of paying them?
Look at it like this. I pay ISP for BW. I use BW. Because I use paid for BW, ISP lowers it. I can't honestly give my money to anyone ISP that does that.
I live in an apartment complex and we are allotted 500mb/24 hours otherwise traffic to our computer is put on a "lower priority" flag. I assume their logic is to prevent downloading of movies and what not. The problem is 500mb of legal data is totally feasable. Today I downloaded the EVE client, 564 MB. Now I have to suffer slower speeds because of it? Fuck that. Since my ISP is provided with my rent it's a one package deal and I don't have much of a choice, but once I purchase a home, hell will freeze over before I pay an ISP to throttle my bandwidth. My.02
The problem is that they're still copping out. Yes, they lost control. Yes, they need to regain it. Yes, that is really fucking hard. But read steps 1,2, and 3. They aren't admitting that they are the problem, they aren't admitting they made mistakes, and they aren't making an effort to take responsibility for their mistakes and to fix them. With that attitude, you won't get better. What they need is a wake up call and the motivation to take the steps needed. A support group can definitely help, but throwing yourself in with a dozen other people who also refuse to accept responsibility is not a good idea.
First off, please don't comment on something you know nothing about. Unless you ARE an alcholic, or have some other form of addiction, you will probably never understand the 12 steps.
Secondly, you are very wrong about not taking accountability for your actions. Steps 4-9 (and 10 which I didn't post) are all about personal responsibility. Let me list them as to enlighten you.
4 Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5 Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6 Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7 Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8 Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9 Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
First of all even if it DOES pass do they really think they're gonna be able to push all the porn sites into one domain...seriously. Secondly who is gonna be the comittee that sits down and says X is porn, Y isn't. Just how much of a breast can I show before it's porn? Will Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition become porn? This is my biggest concern. It just seems like too much of a damned fine line even bother passing this domain. Just my.02
Don't mean to troll or anything but why is this on the front page of NEWS for nerds? It's been done before. It's not really a new idea and I'm sure this page could easily be found via Google.
I guess this is what happens on slow news days?:\
Well that's nice that they are the same in your setup. But what about the 200 million other users who don't have their email integrated into their life like you do. For them IM is much more convenient and practical.
Hmmm. That's a pretty sad story. You helped me see both sides of the story. I do have a question though and your story confuses me a little. So not having taxes for online shops is what killed you? I'm not sure I understand how you went out of business. If you could clear up the confusion that would be great. Also, since you so clearly identified the problem (and have great understanding of it) what would you propose a solution to be? Thanks, would love to hear your reply.

IM is just a person private email system, period. Try using email, you can even use filters to pick your freinds messages out of the background noise, like inter-departmental mail.
To fix the security risk of IM, either the you give up point to point email that it is to force it though filtering servers (sound like email there again). The Anti-Virus programs on every machine will have to start filtering all that traffic too (wait they are doing this for wmail today also!!)
Ummm, not really. Half the people I know check their email via the web and have to login everytime vs IM where you just keep a small window open (in fact you can minimize it) and messages pop up if someone contacts you. Plus with IM, when I send someone an IM I *know* if they are in front of their computer that instant, or idle, or away. Plus according to your plan it's effiecient to send an email to someone saying "Hey wanna goto the movies tonight" only for them to check their email the next day.
...a dedicated, well-written, well-publicized effort to educate the general public about this sort of thing. We need to establish a meme among the Joe Sixpacks, Moms and Dads, and Grandma Sues of this country that they're foolish if they don't read stories on [whatever].com each week. And on that site, we need to explain, in plain English, [A] what the flaw could do to their computer, [B] what they can do to temporarily/permanently fix the flaw, and [C] what the flaw is due to (99% of the time, this will be 'due to Microsoft software').
Microsoft obviously isn't interested in having an educated user base, or they'd make such a site themselves and advertise it extensively.
Or you can just hand them an iMac that suits their needs and be done with it. Worked with my grandma who likes to click on every pop banner on the net. Just my.02
I suppose this is a step in the right direction. When I got my laptop. The first thing I did was remove any trace of MSIE (short of uninstalling it) and installed Firefox. I'm sure this will help with XP security. I just wonder how much this is gonna piss of MS and how they are gonna strike back. We shall see.
Didn't RTFA but I would doubt the statement that so many americans are addicted, but rather their lives are integrated with technology. It's become a way of life. I'm a 22 year old college student. Every single college student I know (and most adults) has a computer, mostly laptops. My internet connection is constant and AIM is always signed on. If I need to get a hold of one of my friends I send him an IM, then check his away message and then call him. I live in NYC and I order my groceries online and they are delivered to my house. I recieve and turn in my school assignments across the web. I have a media center to serve up content throughout my house which is on a network. I bought most of my christmas presents online, pay my bills online, and check my bank online. Anywhere I take my laptop with me I can almost always get some sort of wireless connection, which allows me to access any of my files from home. I have a GPS navigation system in my car to keep me from getting lost and help me in unfamiliar areas. The list goes on and on. But my point is I'm not the only one living my life around technology. I grew up with computers (technology) and it's just a way of life with me and many others. The way techonology has evolved has created a global network and made venues for delivering information instantly. I think everyone has grown accustomed to that instant delivery. I wouldn't call it an addiction but rather a way of life. I can't even imagine what the life for my children is gonna be like (no slashdot jokes!).
Yup he's right. When I was up at Ft. Bragg this summer they explained SIPRnet to me. Everywhere around the post SIPRnet is marked by red cat5e while internet is marked with blue cables. Most devices (or at least the ones I saw) where marked with blue unclassified stickers and the machines connected to SIPRnet were marked with red classified stickers. What I found interesting was that ANY device, whether it be printer, memorystick, or scanner, had to be marked as classified with a red sticker if it was used or simply connected to a classified machine. Pretty cool concept I thought.
WTF. Ok there are a few things on my mind. Perhaps I'm not fully understanding things but let me explain anyways.
What the fuck is wrong with companies in America? I here stories of Verizon disabling bluetooth, ISPs fighting city-wide wireless, etc. I don't understand what companies are afraid of by progress. You guys are gonna be left in the dust by other nations that aren't so narrowly focused on money, but rather take progress as a goal. Apparently not in the USA.
So BellSouth goes and pulls a stunt like this making them look like total jerks. Way to go. Can someone please explain what their motive would be for pulling a stunt like this?
Porbably all the average consumers who bought XP and thought it was the latest and greatest thing from Microsoft. You have to understand that only a small percentage of knowledgeable computer users are gonna realize Vista is a stripped out pos, everyone else and their mother will go to Best Buy and see it as the newest OS by MS and they will buy it (in hopes of fixing the XP security problems, which I doubt it will). That's who will buy it, just my.02 though.

I'm sorry but for $3.95/mo on Geocities DOES NOT get you php, mysql, and gallery2 support. Those requires $8.95/mo plus a $10 service fee.
actually I stand corrected. Safari isn't open source but here is a useful link.

except their OS....oh and their browser...forgot those two things :D
nice star wars reference ;)

Reminds me of a movie about MS Clippy

When I can buy this thing and probably emulate one, while playing Quake 4 and Half Life 2 in the background. hee hee hee
