I've come to the same conclusions as you. To play devils advocate, while they're subject to stagnant wages, their wages buy new toys (cheap digital cameras, smart phones, 32" LCD 720p TVs) that did not exist before.
But yes, the productivity benefits are mostly going to the upper echelon in corporations, and the stock holders. You have to have a company run from the ground up for the benefits of the employee (and not the employer) if you want a stable society where people benefit from their work. Good luck finding a reason for corporations to do that. Under certain worldviews a logical reason can be found to run a company like this.
I figured this out a while ago which is why my taskbar always goes on the side of my widescreen monitor. So now we'll have a web-browser with tabs on the side as well. Might as well get rid of the tabs and go back to full windows? As long as I can switch through windows with ctrl-tab then I'd be happy.
Just when you think quiet electric cars are going to help diminish the noise pollution problem, they go and do this.
speaking as someone who rode public transit every day for about 1.7 years in total through my college experience (5 semesters), I heartily support this. It's incredibly obnoxious walking to the subway stop at 8am in the morning and getting a several wheels' worth of worn out extremely loud screeching breaks right in your ear, followed by a deafeningly roaring diesel engine, followed by a mouth full of diesel exhaust.
I got some in-ear monitors to combat this, but not everyone riding public transit is getting paid $18/hour like I was and can afford to drop $100 on the headphones. In case you ask, the rest of the money was going to college, couldn't afford a car, but yes I could afford one set of $100 earplug-headphones.
As long as they have a competitive card for the money, I'll buy from them if it fits my needs. It's nice knowing that in about a year we'll have a solid Linux experience if you're using ATI.
as long as they let us record whatever song we want, I'm down with this legislation.
Also, why does Preview always take about 20 seconds to load? What a waste of time, I almost just closed the tab. I have yet to find a single computer that doesn't do this. It's like once I preview once, I'm good for that browsing session, but not until then. Does it on all browsers.
No, they'll probably transfer most of it to fiscal havens, helping to fund drug lords and terrorists.
Have you heard about the Broken Window Fallacy? If these guys get money for nothing and recirculate it, the overall economy in the end gains nothing. The money that passes though these guys could have been used to produce useful goods and services instead of feeding the pleasures of fat greedy pigs.
Yes, people with money don't invest it or spend it, they put it where it can't grow or do anything to earn them more money.
This is actually what a lot of America is founded on-- think about it, in an ideal world a company would have a need, and they would go find the company that provides the solution. We do the opposite, we employ tons of marketers to convince people they need our product. What happens with a recession? Tons of them get laid off. With an extended recession? They don't get hired again. TIS A GOOD DAY TO
BE AN ENGINEER. (sorry to those who were expecting a different ending)
Yes. Even the best DRM is nothing if someone just sets a camcorder up in front of the TV with telesync audio going into the line or mic in.
In other words yes, we are SOL, and the next 50 years are going to be NOTHING like the last 50 years, and it's foolish to think all will continue as it has. Don't bother investing in the stock market. Just save. You don't need to worry about buying a house either, aside from the benefit of owning it, it's not an investment property anymore (80m homeowners (babyboomers) will be dying in 10-30 years...who will buy their houses? The overburdened with debt just-graduated, still unemployed students? Nah.)
Get a job in government, I think you're safest there.
Huh I'm confused? We get them to stop controlling the value of their currency and there are natural market pressure to stop outsourcing our manufacturing to China. But as I said at the end, "In other words, it's not going to happen" because Obama won't consistently enforce this. His politicking about exchange rates is nice, and China officially intervened less, they just told their state-controlled banks to buy more dollars instead. Of course Obama wasn't serious, he's just fussing like politicians fuss to pacify the public.
I suppose you're implying that the absence of me providing a better solution means any wrong solution is OK?
hmm good point about getting them to buy American. But in China, everybody likes our movies, and for whatever reason, Buick is a luxury line of vehicle (this is why GM didn't kill it). So it _can_ be done.
So maybe we should just outlaw foreigners from buying Treasuries? Some other poster came up with that one. Interesting mind-food...
That's a different argument in my mind. You are right. In my opinion, there is one problem and it has created two issues. The problem, as CSL put it, is "you cannot have a good society, without good men".
If our companies were seeking to benefit the lives of their workers, then they would treat their employees better. On the other hand, if we actually had some shame in voting for people that extended unemployment benefits (in other words, if we held ourselves more personally responsible), then those people would eventually get hungry and find some motivation to start working harder.
lot of engineers seem to enjoy macro economics.

You control the tabs by pressing ctrl-tab.
A playing card in the rims could do that for a lot less, and I'll wager the drag would cost less than the energy drain of the speaker system too....
are we really worrying about the 30 watt energy drain? Why not just make everyone drive a 130hp car?

from Africa or Europe.
They need to add the sounds of hooves and the cracking of whips too, for those of us not used to these newfangled horseless carriages...
You're going to put the horse whip manufacturers out of business!

so that we can feel good about being green?
Don't forget that hat $7000 credit has a greenhouse gas carbon footprint, too.
Right, that's in the future. Every CPU in existence does not "come" with a GPU integrated on die, not for a year or two.
Other than, of course, the fact that an intel GPU comes on the die of every intel CPU sold, atoms excepted(for now).
What are you talking about?

You wouldn't steal a movie.
So why would you steal webpages?
Blocking ad content is stealing.

Doesn't really matter either way, for $500 you're still getting a kick butt quad core computer.
Sir this is an amazing piece of wisdom. Thank you for that. I will remember this.
