The two aren't mutually exclusive. A console upgrade can still be a major event. They would still only do it every 5-7 years. But when they do it, the changes would be deterministic. I as a developer would know "OK, they'll have more cores, faster processors, more memory, and a much faster GPU but otherwise the way I do my work hasn't changed a whole lot".

I'm not saying they upgrade willy nilly or allow users to upgrade, I'm saying pick a mainstream architecture so that when they do update it with a new console version it's not a huge change.

True enough. The point is there aren't a lot of DVI capture cards, and there wouldn't be a lot of HDMI capture even without HDCP. So the "bad guys" imposing DRM at the interconnect level isn't hurting anyone.

If anything, HDHP is pointless. Capturing content from HDMI would be retarded, especially since you can easily do it in any of numerous other ways.

Yeah, way to mix stuff up all crazy like. What does HDMI have to do with anything? Personally I think you're retarded if you want an extra D/A and A/D conversion in your video loop, and further retarded if you don't want audio and video in one cable.

More importantly, name one thing that HDMI has prevented you from doing compared to, say, DVI which has none of your hated "teh DRMz!" in it. Do you have a DVI video input device in your computer? If so, you must be loaded.

HDMI is sweet, and nothing wrong with Bluray either. I rip that shit straight to ISO and play it back from my media center. What DRM?

Microsoft made a mistake using a PowerPC chip, that's the problem. They should have stuck with x86 chips. Then they could load up a 32nm, 8 core CPU in late 2010 and have NVidia and ATI compete to pick the graphics chip, and developers would see more power, a new DirectX version, but otherwise a similar development experience.

PowerPC... Seriously, smart decision there Microsoft.

For that matter, Cell was a stupid choice too. Mainstream x86_64 chips are now the only logical choice for a high end console, but both major console makers have F'ed themselves.
