I think this license is meaning more of a "don't copy our new 'standards' (microsoft propriatary extensions)"

I think the reason they don't want you using it with any open tools is so that no one else can copy their ideas and their API and release it open source. If you're going to use the new MS SDK, use it, don't abuse it and certainly don't give it away to open source people.

Because we all know that the only reason microsoft has such an edge is because it gets people hooked on propriatary software and tools.

We all know that the standards in this area will take a few more years to develop. This agreement ensures that they can keep their new technology to themselves. After everyone starts building stuff for the MS only API, standards will emerge and MS will once again have it's own version of the standards. Look at IE and it's anti-compliance.

My question is why don't we seen an OS X version of mozilla yet! It's already ported to unix systems, and working on older mac OS... I don't think it should be that hard to port.

The only reason I run netscape 4 for linux anymore is that it has java and ssl works good. For most of my browsing I use konq, which is great... But not for everything. With a bit more work, mozilla could do really well. People will use it, but only if it works

  10. Awkward... on Half Keyboard, Full Bore · · Score: 1

This looks like it could be the most awkward keyboard I have ever seen. Yes it only takes one hand to type... But there is a reason keyboards were origionally invented for two hands. You have to 'hold' down space bar (shift they are calling it) to get it to flip. Plus u'd have to learn how to type with your left hand the right keys... They are inverted so you use the same fingers though... But that just makes it so I can't find anything by looking at it.

Now you need to learn how to do the right hand on your left hand. You need 2 keys for each position (or more for special keys). You have to push an extra key for each letter on the other side of the keyboard. This would be like trying to type in all caps while using the shift key and not caps lock... Notice the slow down.

I can see how this may be useful to people who don't have a lot of space... And maybe for a palm...

But I think that enough people complain already about laptop keyboards, so this would definately not be good for laptops and especially not good for desktops!

"Microsoft is attacking open source at its weakest point: the GPL"

WTF? Open Source != GPL for the 1 gazillionth time. The BSD license is still open source. And it does make more sense in the business sense. It always has. I love the BSD license and it is great for products like apache. Some things you just don't need to sell though. Not too many businesses would need to fix up a linux kernel for a software product, therefore GPL is fine. But with apache, creating custom modifications for custom needs, BSD is great. I'm sure one of the reasons Apache is so widely used is that It can be easily used in the business world.

Microsoft isn't attacking Open Source at all. Especially when they use BSD code in some of their TCP implementations on 2000. They however are attacking GPL. Yeah, it may not be the best for business, but that's my point. Choose the license that fits. There are some apps that may be better off using the BSD license. But I don't think Linux is one of them.

At least now, Microsoft sees Linux as a threat. It's good publicity to have this in the news all the time. When people really investigate it, they will find the truth. GPL has it's pitfalls. You may want to modify code, but can't cause you don't want to release the changes. But hey, that's better then not having the code at all

The censorship comes in when they try and regulate which games should never hit the market because they are too violent. Or when they say this is too violent for younger people. This is what they are planning on doing from what I gather in the article. Regulate video games the same as movies according to the ratings

The main difference that I have found in Computer science (refeering just to programming side of thing, not algorithms and stuff. that's another topic) is that it's not important what language you use but how you accomplish your goal. A real experienced programmer will take a look at the job, and choose a language based on the task at hand. If not you end up with emulators written in java and web interfaces in assembler (well, not that bad).

I'm only about half done my CS degree, but find myself turning to different languages based on what problems I have to solve. Languages are tools. Let's use hammers to hammer in nails and screwdrivers for screws and not resolve to arguing about how much better a hammer is.

No, there isn't a migration path to bring phones in line with newer technologies. But I really feel we need to do it right the first time. Just imagine if everyone started using IPV4 phones... We'd run out in no time. You can get a cheap computer for about 800$ but a cheap phone costs about 10$. Even with modifications, many people may choose to switch to the "digital phone".

I feel that all people inventing these great new technologies should really think it fully through. Make something that will last. Use IPV6. If people would start using it, more people would have support for it. But I suppose we really have to run out before people realize.

Secondly, If I write a song myself, me not being a member of the RIAA have sole rights to that music and how and where I choose to sell it.

I really don't understand what they are trying to pull. Either this article is just bullshit, or they actually think they can pull this kind of a stunt off. I think the reason for all this crap from the RIAA in the first place is cause they want to make money.

The pirateing of music have been around ever since there was a method of recording music. It was all over the place when cassettes came out. The difference with digital format is that they feel they can easily regulate it, which they can't.

They know people will still pirate music, they just want a bigger cut of the action. Selling mp3s for the price of a CD would only allow them to make more profit not haveing the cost of production. (even though it is fairly low). It seems like a great plan. Get other people to create mp3s that you say they can sell, then you make money from doing absolutely nothing.

Is there nothing in our society that isn't driven by the lust for money anymore? Aparently not.
