50$ a month is more then reasonable. If you can't do it for under that then you should even think of selling it.
Currently I have a high speed ADSL connection that is capped at about 230 KByte/sec download and 80 KByte/sec upload. It costs me 39.99$/month. I have not seen an unlimited dial up connection for less then 20$.
I would disagree with the CRTC making this a general rule though. They always mess with things that they just should leave alone.
Ok, I think that is a great idea shipping a programming language. But why basic? There are lots of other languages that they could of chosen. Out of all of the languages I know (about 10+), basic has to be the worst. I can see them not shipping C, but I could easily see Java or pascal. Heck why not fortran, that's a joke to use!
But basic is so counter-intuitive and teaches bad programming practices. Look what happend to microsoft... It could happen to you.
I don't use windows. I use linux. I NEED a browser that will do the job and that's not IE. Therefore I will need to rely on netscape to produce something that is compatable, fast and a good alternative to IE.
So I say, the browser wars must go on...

...and even NDS is losing ground to LDAP based solutions...
Maybe you don't realize it but NDS is based on LDAP. So are you trying to say that it is losing to other Directory services such a MS activedirctory or what. Saying NDS is losing ground to LDAP based solutions is just redundant because NDS is an LDAP based solution.
In fact. NDS got some of it's ldap stuff from OpenLDAP and has been working with them. Novell has hinted that it may give back some of its improvments back to OpenLDAP, particularly some of it's extensions and stuff in V3.
There are still a lot of people using Novell software. Maybe not with linux, but it's still around. Microsoft has tried to take the market from them with NT/ActiveDirectory like it has taken the market from netscape. But netscape is still around (well sort of...). And I believe that Novell will still be around provided it still provides new innovations. Even though I feel that they should expand their market.
void main() is not illegal! At least it didn't used to be. I know for a fact it works with TC++ 3.0 for does and all of microsoft's compilers. I believe that if you are usinig true C++ then you have to have some return code, but I'm not sure
I don't think we really need to respond to this as much as you say. I think this article itself is great advertising for linux. Microsoft is saying it's a good operating system but ours is better. They wouldn't even bother doing counter-advertising if it wasn't anything to worry about.
People are starting to know that there are alternatives to windows.
I would have to disagree with the ad in general. It portrayed Windows as *NOT* mutating...
Being a windows user for some time, I know that windows 2000 wasn't the first version of windows. Essentially first was DOS. then windows 1.0 -> 2.0 -> 3.0 -> 3.1 -> windows 95 -> windows 95 osr 2 -> windows 98 -> windows 98 SE -> windows ME. Also branched off from windows 3.1 came NT 3.5 -> NT 4.0 -> NT 5.0 (win 2k).
Basically my point is if that's not mutation I don't know what is. Just as in linux you have to constantly upgrade your system to keep up, you have to do the same with windows as well to run the latest software.
Some people complain that this is a bitch and it is if there is new software you need to run. You have to upgrade. But it doesn't matter if you are using windows 2000 or linux or anything else. They ALL mutate. This is just one of those simple facts in an ever changing market.
On another note. Windows mutations are much more costly then Linux or FreeBSD...
This is nothing new nor a new idea. Mass. Universities may be the first in the USA, but this has been going on for at least 3 years at a University here in canada. Acadia University is a school semi close to where I live where all of the students get laptops. Unlike in Mass, they each get one of these laptops as part of their student fess. Therefore eliminating the stolen gear problem.
This allows the students to have a unique learning environment. Instead of computer labs on campus there are ethernet jacks in hallways and in various other places. Also, professors assume that you have access to a computer and this is always a correct assumption. It is much easier to assign assignments by email and know for sure that the computer labs won't be too busy for students to get them.
I don't go to acadia U, because their CS program isn't as good (they are really an artsy school for those who may be interested). But the idea I think is great. As for Mass. U. They may be first in the US, BUT they are not first at all.
The idea of a Tax cut is something think is good. Yes you pay less money on your taxes. All this is doing by cutting taxes is restricting the government to less money to put into programs.
I don't feel we should be cutting taxes because we are only hurting ourselves. We want health care and a better school system but are unwilling to pay for it. And by taking a tax cut, we are putting money in our pockets that could have gone to much more important things.
I would go even so far as to increase taxes so that we can get better services from the government. You may disagree, but I think we will end up with more in the long run.
OS/2 was a joint project. Win NT came out of that but not using the same code. If win NT was based on OS/2 then IBM would be entitled to a chunk of it by law. Microsoft abandoned this for NT to get rid of IBM cause they no longer needed them
I would agree that his comments seem to be just political bull shit directed at the target demographic. But that isn't going to win my vote. I'm not sure anymore who I should even consider voting for. Is this really how Bush feels or if he was talking to a bunch of college students would be be pro-internet.
Yes there is some bad stuff on the internet and it can lead to violence. But the Computers and the internet are my life. I'm finishing up my CS degree and want to vote for someone who takes a stand for helping technology and the internet. I don't want someone who will just condem it.
I no longer have a candidate to vote for. Bush talks the internet down to appeal to demographics. Gore thinks he owns the stupid thing. Liberman would like it if it grew on a tree. So, who can I vote for???
Just because it uses DOS emulation doesn't mean it's OS/2. Besides, if it was based on OS/2, IBM would get a chuck of the market and microsoft would have to share. Windows NT and 9x were made instead of OS/2 so that they did not have to shre with IBM.
MDK 7.1 got to shelves pretty quickly after release, and KDE2 Final will ship in a week
It can hit the shelves fairly quickly after release BUT, you have to allow time for testing. You can't expect them to say, well it worked with KDE pre-final so this should work fine and just ship it. They would have to have another (fourth) beta before they could make this move (which would actually be a good idea.
This is not practical for most users though. I typically pop a new board in my computer every year or so. According to your logic I would have about 5 copies of windows (one of each version since 95). I understand this is how the law reads, but is it really meant to be interpreted this way?
I would have to agree with you. Give mozilla a try. I'd really like to use it on a daily basis, but it's still not stable enough for that yet. Many pages it just can't load without problems.
I just downloaded Opera and I must say it's amazing!!! It's extremely fast and much more stable then mozilla. BUT I plan on continuing to download the nightly's because mozilla is still working out many bugs and is getting better all the time. One of these days It will be a fully working version and I will then choose to accept it or condem it.
If the beta sucks, it needs more work and another beta until the bugs are worked out. Give it time.
MS has a version of NT for the DEC (compaq now) alpha. It also has worked with DEC in the past to give windows API under VMS. MFC is available under the MAC...
and the list goes on...
My point is, they are not so x86 only as many people think
Hmmm. When I was reading this is was kinda shocked...
I knew Sawfish as Sawmill. I have been using Mandrake 7.1 which comes with sawmill. I'm not really sure why they changed the name to sawfish, but they don't really need a reason.
There is not linux version available but there is a windows version of it. I think they modified some of the code because it won't connect with any gnutella program except the one it is made for.
If you want to get the program, you can look in various newsgroups such as alt.binaries.multimedia or my favorite alt.binaries.drwho. If you can't find it still, you can email me.
I would have to agree with this. Gnutella is more the protocol then anything else. It is as way of sharing files. There are many modifications to Gnutella out that that use a different set of servers. ABMNet is an example of one. It's popular amoungst newsgroupies.
ABMnet is a modification for mostly videos/multimedia. (I use it to snag Dr Who videos). It's much better then just using gnutella for a few reasons. There are less users and they all share similar interests in what files are shared. Less users also mean less queries, and so the servers don't get bogged down.
By using gnutella in such a way to tailor to individual market needs, it can be much better then napster could ever be. If there were a set of gnutella servers just for a particular style of music, the searches would be faster and performance be much better for the users and the servers.
If you look at it from this point of view, you can't really extend napster too easily (although it has been done with things like napigator).
"File a bug report" shortcut. Are these guys trying to be ironic or what?
As far as I know, this is pretty standard on Microsoft betas as well as any other betas for that matter. They want to give you the convinence to report bugs in the beta (in hopes that they will be fixes and they can release the final quickly). It's kinds like a reminder but that's it. Now if they put that on the final version of windows... That woule be something to see
Personally I find this rather amusing. It seems that nullsoft is trying to cause as much trouble for AOL as possible. You will remember how gnutella was created and then removed by AOL and now this.
I wonder if Frankel and other at nullsoft are trying to see how far AOL will allow them to go, or maybe they are just unhappy with their job at AOL. Most companies have you sign a non-disclosure agreement in regards to the software owned by the company. This would blatently infringe on this contract.
Perhaps Frankel is doing this to get back at AOL for buying his company out (even though it made him rich). To me this course of action doesn't seem logical. It would be like a microsoft employee putting out a free version of a windows like operating system which he based on the windows code.

I was meaning they wouldn't steal one in order to do their school work. Of course there will always be those trying to make a grand here and there.

mod_ssl is just a dynamic module that you add to your current apache. It's compiled separately. It's like using mod_perl or mod_php.
