  1. Data Replication on Data Recovered From Space Shuttle Columbia HDD · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm somewhat amazed that a vehicle as well connected as the shuttle doesn't mirror its data to the ground controllers. In the event of a failure, an alternate copy of the data would exist and millions of dollars worth of experimental data wouldn't be at risk. On-track does however rock (Until you get the bill)!

  2. MD5 & SHA-1 might not be cracked..... on Chinese Prof Cracks SHA-1 Data Encryption Scheme · · Score: 2, Interesting

But they are certainly weak against attacks using rainbowtables. Both algorithms should be tossed into the bit bucket for something a little more secure. New services including Hashbreaker, Schmoo, freerainbowtables etc show how easy it is to brute force using rainbowtables. Isn't anyone worrying about a flood? I can't imagine the expense of loosing all that equipment to water.

Why not have the wireless option as a failsafe for the wired system? It makes sense to use this just in case the conventional wired system failes. Just my $.02

  5. Re:Unbreakable ...Encryption MD5? on Code for Unbreakable Quantum Encryption · · Score: 1

Yes, MD5 is a weak encryption. Check out http://www.hashbreaker.com/, you can download MD5 rainbowtables free to crack MD5 hashes.

Perhaps you should look into an Online backup solution, the costs are very resonable for such critical data. I would recommend http://www.backup-live.com/
