  1. Re:Non-RIAA CDs [Slightly OT] on Compressed Beyond Recognition: An MP3 Compendium · · Score: 1

if anybody here has any interest in electronic/rave music, you'll be surprised to hear exactly how much great music there is out there that has no connection to the "big labels" (though Sony is trying to cash in bigtime by re-releasing some tracks in the UK, but aren't being accepted all that well. big surprise).

i am a dj myself, and i spin basically two types of music: UK Hard House and Nu-NRG. these are my favourite genres of music (after Baroque and Classical) and most people have never even heard about them.

the trick is of course, that "underground" music is difficult to find. you're not going to hear it on the radio, or even in most clubs outside of England (or a few big clubs in big cities like the Guvernment in Toronto). it's pretty hard to keep up with the Artists unless you're a dj (especially since many of the artists go by different names for different releases). fortunately, you can usually let a dj do all the work for you, and then just follow the djs you like. :)

there are lots of kinds of electronic music, and you'd be surprised to hear how different they can be. many people new to "rave" music usually like trance. artists like Christopher Lawrence or Paul Oakenfold. there are many different kinds of trance: epic trance and morning trance are very popular (though extremely cheesy). there's goa trance and psychedelic trance, hard trance, tech trance, progressive trance,etc.. do a few websearches.

the music i spin (Nu-NRG, UK Hard House) is well covered by sites like HardNRG.com (that i help out with) or Energy UK. my site is djnumbernine.com. i'm also in the midst of setting up my own opennap server at ukhardhouse.com:8888.

if you're not into standard 4-4 dance, you might like drum'n'bass or jungle. there's also breaks and leftfield too. i'm no expert in these genres, but do a few websearches and i'm pretty sure you'll find something you like. i started out spinning Tech-Step Jungle and 'Intelligent' Drum'n'Bass.

there's also of course the old standby house: a very vast and matured genre. i like uk hard house myself, but there's also chicago house, diva house, garage and speed garage.

of course there's also hardcore, which is pretty big in Toronto, especially happy hardcore. Anabolic Frolic is the big name in Happycore here in North America. more can be found at Hullabaloo.

there's techno as well, the overly snobbish and mature genre :). some good stuff can be found at techno.ca. they've also got a great links page to all sorts of stuff.

the point is, there's plenty of great music that's not even remotely associated with the RIAA: you just need to work a little bit at finding it. there's a lot of different genres to sort out. check out this "glossary" or A-Z of Electronica. i hope i've given you some good starting points. do yourself a favour and visit a few of these sites! :)

the G4 was deemed a "supercomputer" because it surpassed 1 Gigaflop. why doesn't Apple start quoting the speed of their processors in Gigaflops (or something similar)? that way, the could say that the new "1.2 Gigaflop" G4s are out, and compete with the 900 Megaflop (or whatever) Pentiums. not to mention the fact that most ignorant consumers would just equate Gigaflops to Gigahertz anyhow.

am i missing something? why do they still use Megahertz when i makes them look so bad? afterall, it's just as meaningless as any other metric.

alcohol is a deadly drug. don't forget it

also, "Weed Shrooms and E are all gateways to a much much worse area of society" for you. please keep this in mind. not for everybody, but it was for you. probably many of your friends as well, as they were probably doing heroine with you for the same reason, but don't then assume that this is the case for everyone

in fact, in all rational studies, there has not been shown a strong correllation to prove the "gateway drug" theory for most of the population. it does occur, but again, not with most people. it is unfortunate that it happened to you, but please don't assume everyone in the world is you.

but regardless, this is off-topic completely. i will never suggest that these drugs be legalized, as i've probably been in similar circumstaces to you. however, it is absolutely rediculous to conclude that drug information should be made illegal. no information should be illegal, ever. withheld maybe, but never outlawed.

Person B points out that it is only one type of rare poppy that works. where is he finding this information? why lycaeum.org, one of the very sites that the government is attempting to make illegal.

you have to understand that "drug manufacture" rumours are spread all the time. most of them are completely wrong, and unfortunately, many are extremely dangerous if one were to actually try them. though you may argue that the original mis-information could have come from another Internet site, i have found that it is more likely to hear incorrect information through word-of-mouth.

drug information, no make that all information must be free, so that people can make informed, rational decisions.

i know this from real experience. i can't tell you the number of times i've heard people passing dangerous, no, deadly information of how to manufacture MDMA (ecstasy). in fact, a friend of mine was going to attempt to manufacture MDMA based on the directions that he had heard word-of-mouth. he later consulted the Internet, and learned that the method he had learned was in fact a hoax, and ran a very high chance of causing an explosion.

in the end, he found a correct method, and in fact manufactured MDMA sucessfully. that is why he is currently serving jail time, but that's another matter all togther. the fact remains that he would probably be dead right now if it weren't for free drug information on the Internet.

but even if you don't agree with me, and you are so much against drug use that you refuse to even consider the alternatives, consider this:

thistime the government's destruction of free speech does not affect you. however if you let the trend continue, someday it will, and you will be powerless to stop it.

this is in a country where the majority of people are below the poverty line and most people i saw (at least in Manilla) live in shacks on the side of railroad tracks.

but what's *really* crazy about their cellphones? well there are a variety of companies delivering the service: the two biggies being Globe and Smart. but get this: if you're on a Smart phone, it's damned near impossible to connect a call to a Globe phone (and vice versa). in fact, if you're on a Globe phone it can often be difficult to reach a land-line (as land lines are still mostly owned by Smart).

i visited a handful of telecommunications companies in various countries in SouthEast Asia. The Phillipines are by far the most backwards and strange country, in terms of telecommunications, that i have ever witnessed.

perhaps i'm a touch biased, as i have many friends working at RIM (including my roommate), but i would say that the Blackberry would probably be your best bet.

as far as email goes, you can't beat the RIM pagers. they're not a haldheld that tacked on wireless, they're a wireless device, that tacked on an organizer. what this means is that as a wireless device, the BlackBerry comes out on top (though its organizer functions leave something to be desired).

the big difference with RIM pagers is that they're "always on." what this means to users is that you get your email instantly, when it's sent. there's no "dialing" your connection, checking your mail and then waiting for your mail to transfer. instead you hear a chime, and you've got the email right there. and since the email fully downloads before you get the chime, it appears as though the email is instantly there. this is a *big* plus for the RIM device, and makes it *very* useable.

also, the "keyboard" on the RIM is much much better then writing with the pen on the Palm. i thought i'd hate it, but the more i used it, the more i realized i really wish my Palm III had the same thing. you can type surprisingly fast with your thumbs.

as for web surfing, i'm not completely sure on the statis of stock quotes and other niceties. i know that RIM has talked about this in the past, but i'm not sure of its current statis. check with your service provider to see what they're offering right now (any RIM employees care to comment?)
