The recent news of Microsoft going to an XML file format in Office in the next release is encouraging, however I don't expect it to be that simple.
OO (and AbiWord, for that matter) would probably be considered a real threat to Office/Word if they could simply be on the same level playing ground when it comes to reading/writing compatible files.
For all but the simplest docs, I've yet to see a third-party word processor that claims MS Word compatibility to function 100%
Surely the FCC will be able to determine what the house is being bombarded with and put a stop to it?
The mention of the first anniversary of 9/11 is kinda strange too.
Agreed. I have yet to see any performance difference between Fedora and Gentoo running on the same hardware. Maybe if I ran a benchmark, Gentoo would be a fraction of a percent faster but is the overhead of compiling everything actually worth it? I think not.
I'll remain a Gentoo user but it's time to start providing a binary dist for those who don't have time to waste.
MPEG-2 is lossy and that's been used for years for DBS and satellite video redistribution in the form of MPEG-2/DVB (like DISH Network and Bell ExpressVu use as well as news agencies, etc), DigiCipherII (as used by the rest of the news agencies, VOOM, Star Choice DBS in Canada, etc). What's your point?
They've lost the battle. Sony used to mean superior quality, innovative products. Now they're just another crappy consumer electronics company.
Apple has stomped them bad. They'll never catch up now if they come to market with such restrictions.

You can't watch movies downloaded using BitTorrent at the theater...
It was merely a joke.
Time to steal the good features and port them to Linux :)
IMHO, Slowaris is relatively polished, but some things are clunky and slow.

I have the same feeling but at least would give them benefit of the doubt...

Why do you assume I'm trolling or joking? I thought it was a serious question... thanks for the info just the same.
Do they build in a self-destruct mechanism? I know it's the desert, but surely there's a congregation out there watching the goings on.
How about "$1M" or "1 million dollars"?
I haven't looked it up either but I suspect they're using the older, more mature MPEG-4. Are there hardware H.264 decoders already?

that MPEG-4 is passe now? Who will be the first DBS company to support H.264?
