    Function: noun
    Etymology: acr- + -onym
: a word (as NATO, radar, or snafu) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term; also : an abbreviation (as FBI) formed from initial letters : INITIALISM (the emphasis is mine)

The recent news of Microsoft going to an XML file format in Office in the next release is encouraging, however I don't expect it to be that simple. OO (and AbiWord, for that matter) would probably be considered a real threat to Office/Word if they could simply be on the same level playing ground when it comes to reading/writing compatible files. For all but the simplest docs, I've yet to see a third-party word processor that claims MS Word compatibility to function 100%

Agreed. I have yet to see any performance difference between Fedora and Gentoo running on the same hardware. Maybe if I ran a benchmark, Gentoo would be a fraction of a percent faster but is the overhead of compiling everything actually worth it? I think not. I'll remain a Gentoo user but it's time to start providing a binary dist for those who don't have time to waste.

MPEG-2 is lossy and that's been used for years for DBS and satellite video redistribution in the form of MPEG-2/DVB (like DISH Network and Bell ExpressVu use as well as news agencies, etc), DigiCipherII (as used by the rest of the news agencies, VOOM, Star Choice DBS in Canada, etc). What's your point?
