Yeah I was joking I disable a number of services and install a long list of software to secure my Windows boxes before I allow them onto the internet. I would much prefer windows to ask me what services to start when I do the initial install as opposed to starting a load of services which I don't need - such as remote assistance....

There is a windows version - its called the Microsoft Security Centre - it checks to see if you have an AV package, XP firewall turned on and Automatic updates switched on.. what more do you need to secure a windows box?

"This is because there are inevitable blinders that you put on when coding your own design or testing your own code." I couldnt agree more with this. I recently designed and developed an app which our helpdesk use to log calls. I was asked to do the testing which I tried to decline saying that it was bad practice. I found that I struggled to create faults / errors because I knew how it should work and how new records should be created - the end users are good testers I found - We set the app up for 10 users and within 2 weeks any bugs / annoyances were cleared up so we could roll out properly. your average user can break anything... Testing your own code is a big no no as far as I am concerned..

My Nokia 6310i phone can cause my Laptop to switch off! - new Compaq nc4010 it is meant to be some kind of interference with the backlight electronics.. if my phone ringing can cause my laptop to turn off I would imagine that they can have effect on all maner of other objects (HP accept the fault as a known fault - however this doesnt help my company which uses these phones and laptops as their standard!) we all have to keep out phones as far away from the laptops as possible! which is really handy when using IR Dialup...
