  1. Hotmail & Gmail Accounts on FBI Agents Don't Have Email Access · · Score: 1

I suspect that the FBI has a few more security issues to resolve than a typical company would have, but not having any solution probably creates more of a security breach.

Without anything provided for them, it seems logical that agents might turn to some of the free providers for this service.

I wonder how much FBI business is going out over Gmail or Hotmail accounts.

It's been quite some time, now since I first read about IBM's interest in PHP. I believe that this posting is further evidence that IBM intends on taping into the huge PHP development communities, allow IBM to quickly make up lost ground to Microsoft.

IBM's interest in PHP probably says as much about the established development communities as it does the language itself. I'm far from an expert on deploying technology globally, but I suspect that one of the biggest obstacles to overcome is finding qualified people to support it.

It might be a good idea for PHP developers to start looking at RUP. Learning formal software development processes can only help anyone looking the take their PHP skills to the corporate world.

    Interesting thoughts...

I can see how, on the surface, this looks like an advantage for the Mom & Pop shops, but the reality of it is that it hurts them.

Because the large retailers have more purchasing leverage and lower marginal costs than a Mom & Pop retailer, the large chain is able to offer the product at a lower cost.

When purchasing online the two major points of consideration for any consumer are:

    1. Price. Comparing price is very easy online
    2. Speed, reliability, and cost of shipping

It's sad to say that, but places like Wal-Mart are able to sell for less, process faster, and ship for less because they sell in volume.

Mom & Pop shops need to focus on service, quality, or other factors that justify the higher prices.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of having the government get involved in ISP services. I think that too much potential for abuse exists.

However, those concerns come further downstream on the political process. In this brief comment from Nancy Pelosi, the DNC is simply trying to point out issues of potential interest to the public. Both parties use this type of strategy.

Simple statements like this serve to:
    1. Create public debate (like the discussion taking place here).
    2. Help identify public interest
    3. Identify potential pitfalls and areas of concern. Hopefully someone from the DNC is reading /. to see some of the comments here.

WOW! I'm blown away by this. I would suspect that this let the lawyers be lawyers and the programmers be programmers attitude is a difficult realization for someone like Torvalds to come to. Anyone who has written a program has faced this issue, most likely on a smaller scale (in my case a much much smaller scale).

Torvalds life's work has some very deep reach.

I bet he is much happier going down this path.
I wonder if Mr. Gates is happy?

I think OSS has a place with in the ERP model. I don't expect to see an OSS financials package taking off any time soon, but the opportunity exists for OSS projects to gain ground in other areas like an HR package.

This is especially true with Oracle. As it aggressively purchases other products, like People Soft, I expect efforts made to increase scale and extend compatibility between product lines. One of the simplest ways to extend compatibility without creating a ton of other issues is to extend the APIs and IFACE tables.

Although I'm not an expert on e-Business, People Soft or SAP, I have written a few applications that feed data through the IFACE tables into e-Business. Improvements in this area will open up tons of options for businesses of all sizes, including the possibility of adding modules from OSS projects.
