  1. Are slashdot stories getting dumber or is just me? on Why TV Lost · · Score: 1

Dude, seriously. TV lost? Watching shows on a computer is more convenient that on the couch in front of one's flatscreen? Your Grandma bought a computer just so she can use facebook? Making ridiculous claims does not help proving your point.

Also, pirating shows can't be the solution. Imagine everybody did that. All your favourite tv shows are made because people out there are putting up with ads and are buying DVDs. Pirates are just freeloaders.

  2. Insightful? on "Netbooks" Move Up In Notebook Rankings · · Score: 1

You are wrong to compare the MacBook Air to these mini notebooks. While the toy-sized machines are limited performance wise and only suitable for mobile use, the MBA offers almost the same performance, keyboard and screen size than MacBook while being slim and light at the same time. This does at least account for the biggest part of the price difference. And you get Mac OS X, which for some people is the real value.

And I'm not even saying this to discount OS X's Time Machine, as it is a good feature and a great feature for OS X and Mac users, but strange how something gets accolades when Apple does it, and is dismissed when Microsoft does it and even technically does it better.

FYI: Time Machine is meant to be a backup software, not a version control system.

Why Apple gets so much credit and Microsoft not? They make things pretty and easy to use for everyone.

  5. Re:New Systems or just OS upgrades? on OS X Leopard Ships On October 26th · · Score: 1

Consider most iMac users will *require* an enclosure if they want to use Time Machine as it will only work with an add-on drive and not on the system disk.
The idea of Time Machine requiring an external drive is because you simply shouldn't backup onto the system that is being backed up. If people want to avoid clutter on their desk, they are free to use a network attached storage instead of a usb connected hard drive, e.g. via the new Aiport Express station.

Remember how you lost the OS war to Microsoft? Its because Windows had more apps, and it didn't matter that it sucked.

Did they really lose? Last time I checked Mac OS was still around and Apple was making a good revenue selling Macs for a high profit margin.

I know I sound like a silly fanboy, BUT: a smartphone is not a personal computer. It's not dependig on 3rd-Party applications as much. A handheld has to be simple and therefore limited in it's functions. Most people are happy doing only a limited number of tasks with their phone.

But anyway I think we'll see some form of 3rd-Party applications on the iPhone platform in the future. I bet in 2008 Steve will present (certified) iPhone apps in the iTunes Store. Mark my words.

This latest outbreak of Apple interest in gaming is in for an even tougher time now that they have been dumped into x86 land and every sane x86 game dev house is perfectly happy letting Mac users reboot into Windows to play their games.
It's not like Windows now comes free or preinstalled with a Mac. In my view, Boot Camp is something only newly switched Mac users use. Neither are Mac users, unlike Linux users, willing to reboot their Computer every now and then. And besides, Mac game development hasn't decreased since Macs have Intel processors.
  8. Apple has to offer what Apple thinks is right on Vista Taking a Nibble Out of Apple in OS Wars? · · Score: 1

Mac market share is stable at about the 6% mark.
I wouldn't be too shure about that. As other comments have pointed out, a browser-based stat over a time line of one month doesnt say very much about the actual tendency in market shares.

However, other sources indicate that Macs are selling quite well lately: http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/05/9000-switchers-a-da y/

If Apple actually has the slightest interest in increasing market share beyond the current they have to offer what mainstream buyers want and are used to. A decent mid size tower at an affordable price.
There may be some people who'd buy such a tower-PC Mac, but it seems as if there are not enough.

Not long ago, you could get a PowerMac G5 with just one CPU for about $1500, so Apple seems to be convinced that the lack of an affordable mid tower won't hurt their sales.

On the other hand, offering four diffent desktop computers would make picking a Mac more confusing for "mainstream" consumers.

perhaps they are moving the company in the direction of devices and away from computer and don't care about computer market share.
Computers are devices. Why shouldn't they care about that?

I was under the impression that it's fairly easy to make an application "univeral" with XCode, especially if you build it from scratch. Why would Adobe want to exclude PowerPC users on purpose?

Now with a virtualization solution, Apple would really be in trouble. OS/2 trouble, that is. People switching mac-win-mac all the time really removes any incentive to port an app to the mac.

Nah. They can't stop it anyway: http://www.techworld.com/opsys/news/index.cfm?news ID=5712.

Besides, running an application in a box and having two operating systems running at the same time isn't nearly as comfortable as a native application, especially if you consider sharing resources like files, printers, etc..
