  1. Laptops for 5th/6th graders on Notebooks Replace Textbooks in Texas · · Score: 1

Well my first thought is that the things would disappear pretty quick or get broke. So what they need to do is eitehr cripple them a little so the hardware will only run a special version of Windows or Linux. Maybe make the laptops with an ARM processor or something like that so they only run Windows CE. That way common games/ viri won't end up on them. Or if they do issue generic Windows machines they should lock them down REALLY hard. So extra programs can't be installed on them.

CTRL-C goes back to the old terminal days. Back them there were very few terminal that supported anything more than the basic letter keys. That is one reason VI has an edit mode and a command mode (no arrow keys on some terminals). CTRL-C and such has been with us ever since. So it is legacy thing at this point. Personally I would like to see CTRL-[CVX] work with a normal terminal, but I don't see this happening.

Sounds like an RS/6000 to me...

Probably could do development on a pSeries and move it over. RS/6000's have PCI slots so you could get video card for it.

Well I tried this CGI script out on a Win 2000 box and it doesn't do anything. Just a blank page when it loads. So I think maybe there is an over reaction to this a bit. Maybe the machines being tested didn't have the latest security patches installed...

  7. XFree is due for this on XFree86 Gets 25k · · Score: 4

It has been my opionion for awhile now that Xfree v4.0 is the most important part of the 'Linux' OS. The kernel is now in a pretty decent state and is very usable. 4.0 should allow more consumer oriented applications (yes, games) to be run. Once 4.0 has proven itself to be stable and fast we'll be looking at a big jump in support. For example look at all the games that have come out for Windoze once DirectX became available. I see this as a possibility for Linux if 4.0 is everything we hope it will be. Congrats on the award and keep up the good work.
