You asked for it, there ya go.. It' a nice player, I saw it at Comdex, well, actually they did not HAVE one there. But they did have some literature on it.. This is an old article, but it is still worth checking out. I am not sure when the release date is, but I hope it is before Christmas. If not, I will have to take back whatever I get for Christmas and get one of these things:)
I am running a similar set up. I have a computer that sits here and does exactly what that computer does. It really doesn't take that much to do what that computer does. Anyone that pays any more than $200 or $300 (USD) for that thing is crazy. It does have a nice feature being like Napster and being able to "share" files with other boxes. But then, I am doing that now too. Just run Napster in that directory, or run an FTP server into your mp3 directory. It's a nice set up. I like it a lot. It saves my main computer system a lot of disk space.. Then that web interface is kind of neat, but personally it would annoy me more than it would be a help to me. You could easily write a program similar to what they are describing that can keep a playlist, search songs, tell top 10 songs, updates playlaylist so a song that somone wants to hear is played before a song taht no one wants to hear.
But for thoes people who don't want to find the time to set up a file server, FTP.. etc. I guess it would be a good thing. And probably not somthing most of the Slashdot crowd would jump all over. But it is kind of neat, if I had one I would play with it a bit, have a good time.. And it's somewhat portable.
Actually, now that I think about it.. You are right, it is not in Revelations. I just wish I could remember where it was. It was in one of the books that talked about the last days. Now I am going to have to go on an in depth search for the scripture. It's starting to bug me.. Oh well.
How familiar are you guys with the Bible? Ever read Revelations? Ever read about the ends of teh earth? Well, this is a part of it:) In the Bible it mentions everything about everyone being recorded. No one will be able to do anything with out it being recorded. Computers are makeing this possible. The article earlier today about Sony and Sun teaming up is just more of the same, showing how close the end really is.
Just figured I would mention that. Maybe get some discussion going about it.
If anyone knows the exact verses I would like to have somone refreash my memory. I have to work in a bit and don't have time to find at at the moment.
You know.. It may not be the BEST business descision for them.. But is is definately good the "The Community". By "The Community" I am talking about us, Slashdot readers, linux users, and GNU fans everywhere. What this means is that the views are our little community are being herd. And that we are makeing a large impact on the industry. Just think, companies are now going a route that may cause them not to make as much money, just to embrace our community and our ideas. They are telling us that what we stand for is working, and is, if not the wave of the future, somthing at least worthy of trying out. This is a Good Thing(tm). Hopefully HP is happy with the results and descides to do this very same thing with other pieces of software, and then it spreads to other software companies.
Just imagine.. Every company offering it's software under the GPL, except for say Micro$oft. Who refuses to go with the flow. This could mean the end of Micro$oft. Or at least it would make microsoft have to step up it's quality, not just a little, A LOT! More than I think is possible, but then who am I to say anything.
You are in it for one of two things.. You have to descide which is more important: 1. Profit 2. Takeing down Micro$oft I don't know about you, but I choose GPL. ((I just thaught of that.. Go figure.))
This is exactly what I am talking about.. You are set. But I don't think the music industry as a whole uses this kind of technology. In other words, it is NOT wide spread as of yet. I don't know why. It may be considered too "High tech" (although I don't consider mp3s high tech). But it is somthing that is begging to be exploited and used, both for it's ease of use, and it's ability to do the job on par, or better than current technologies.
OK.. I was thihnking of this a little differently. I was not really thinking of somthing that is off the shelf. I was thinking somthing that was mainly available on the internet. It is not necessary to compile your source code on EVERYTHING. Their is nothing wrong with getting software that is allready compiled, and if you want the source code so you can do other things with it, you can download that also. I am assuming that this program is not absolutely huge! It is a lot harder for somone to download an OS like say Linux because it's just so big and takes so long, this software should not be that large. My guess would be that at most it would be around 50mb (probably less). That isn't that bad of a download. People can do that in about the same ammount of time that they would spend to go to the store, find what they are looking for, and get back home to install it. Not to mention that would cost money, where as downloading it would cost them.
But I see your point. Personally bought a distro of Linux. Why? Not becuase it was cheap, not because I NEEDED the manuals, no other reason other than having to download 500 MB was out of the range of my 56K modem ((Note: Getting Cable modem next Tuesday:))
But I do see your point. And as I said alter on my post, HP will make some money, but I don't think they will make that much. (Expecially since the article says EXACTLY how they intend to make their money. That is the point I was REALLY commenting on. But I can not forget to agree that, yes they may make some money selling somthing that people could download for free.)
OK, lets start small. How about we have this wireless access from all Laptops, then move to having access from EVERYTHING. Personally I can't wait for the day when I can set up a HUGE file server at my house, full of Mp3s, and be playing them from my car, or better yet from a RIO sized Mp3 player. I could go running with a.5oz device (Most of the weight being buttons) and still have access to my entire 73 day music collection! I hope this is how it ends up working out. I could be be truely wired and connected 24/7, this is a doog thing:) Imagine a DJ showing up to your house to have a party/dance (I know you guys are slashdot geeks, but you can imagine can't you? J/K) he shows up with nothing but speakers and his little Rio sized mp3 decoder, or maybe he brings a laptop so he can play games or read Slashdot while at the party:) Now a days, DJ's bring 500 lbs of CD's. This would be made much easier if music was all kept on a central server to be accessed remotely (Presonally, if I was a DJ I would have a nice computer with 40+ gigs of HD space, I would then bring my computer and stero equipment to the party. Thus no need for all the other work of bringing CD's. I have yet to see this. But this would change what the DJ had to do imensely. Imagine, what song you want? Typing it in and playing it, vs trying to find it in a stack of 500 CD's.) ((Boy, I sure got side tracked))
Of couse their aer other uses for being able to be connected to the internet with other "appliences". Bikes for instance. You could have a GPS built into your childs bike. Then, if he was to go out riding and it was getting dark, or he got lost, you could just bring up your computer and get the GPS cordinates, bring up a map, and know exactly where they are at. This would also work in case the bike was stolen, it would be kind of like a security system.
Overall, I love this idea. I can't wait till the day this happens. What are your predictions on when it is wide spread? I would say not for quite a while, in fact, it may be a long way off. But then, a while ago I would have told you that 200 mhz computers were a long way off to!!
HP wants to make money with this product by, "HP will make money not by selling e-speak directly, but rather by selling gussied-up e-speak software packages such as its "broker-in-a-box." How long would that last? If the software is open source I would imagine that somone would descide to add to it at one point or another, adding the features that HP wants to charge you for. I don't really see how long HP can hope to make money this way. Of cource they may make some, it would take a while for somone to get the source code and descide that they wanted to make additions to the software that makes it more functional in different applications. But how long would this take? Would it ever happen? If this software is truely great it would. And if it is truely great that would only dissapoint HP even more, considering they were the ones that spent the original time, principle, and effort to make the program possible.
Of course they are talking about having a board similar to the board that governs Apache web server. I don't know that much about how that board works, or if HP could still really control what happens to their software so much so that they could keep certain improvements out of the release because it would compete with their product that they wish to sell and make money off of.
I have one more thing to say.. This is a great victory for the GPL, now only if all major software companies followed this example. Imagine the software we could create, how powerful it would be. Not that currently their is no great software, but imagine takeing any piece of propritay software and having the entire community working on adding (or somtimes subtracting) features, and getting more and more out of the program. This is the revolution software needs to go into the new millennium, on a whole new level of quality and functionality (not to mention ported to Linux:)
Actually, if your hand wasn't detected I was thinking that your character would be frozen, unable to move, thus you could not use the formentioned "hack".
Another idea I had was card games over the net. I have only played cards over the net once with a friend. It was sort of pointless, BUT.. I could see this kind of tecnology being applied to cards. Instead of waiting for a user forever to make his play when they really left their computer you could start the countdown as soon as they let go of their mouse.. Hopefully eliminating waits for players that hav left their computer forwatever reason..
This brings up another idea.. What about shocking people that aren't paying attention. hmm.. For instance you are playing this card game, everyone is waiting for this player who is odviously off doing somthing else somewhere else on his computer (In another program). Currently Yahoo games can play a wav file. BUT, what if players could vote to shock the other guy and get him back into the game quicker.. haha.. I think I may just set my mouse up like this. It would be hilarious, somone tries to use your computer but have it set up so that every time they click the mouse button they get shocked.. haha.. Then have shortcut keys to turn it off.. OK, I am having too much fun.. It is amazing what the huma mind can come up with (Or maybe it is just my mind.. either way...)
I posted this because I find it humerous. I am sorry you do not. It was not intended to be my view on the subject. I guess I should have posted anonymous.
Well, looks like Microsoft will have even more annoying features to add to Windows 2k. I am imagineing all these features coming together to form one huge piece of Bloatware. I don't want silly features, I want functionality.
I can think of one good thing it can be used for. If these kinds of things become widely used, it could be used in multiplayer gameing. Once the person lets go of the mouse, he freezes, and is inserted into a reduced damage/ invincible state.. Imagine being able to type a message in Tribes, or Quake without having to worry about being fraged.. Of cource this bring up a lot of other problems too. But it seems like a possibility to me. What else would you use somthing like this for?
Sorry I can't spell.. I was concentrating on good content, getting my point across.
Although I admit that it is pretty bad of me spelling THAT WORD wrong. I guess I could blame it on AMD though, they need to market their processors name better!
((Trust me, I do not feel good about makeing a stupid mistake like that.. But, I'm over it))
Just think, the.18 micron process was somthing that WAS a long way off.. Now that AMD is coming to life and kicking Intels butt, Intel is trying to get their act together. As far as I am concerned AMD will be beating Intel for a long time to come. Maybe not in mhz battles, but in the overall performance of their precessors. One of the most important things I see that AMD has going for them selves is their ability to use extrememly high FSB speeds. As soon as FSB's are running at 225+mhz we will see computers that run circles around today's best computers.
I am gald that this new found "competition" in the chip industry has finally blossomed. AMD had a presence before, but that was all, now AND is pressing to be herd. It will be a long hard battle, one that not only needs to be won by having the biggest (err, in the chip market the smallest:) and the best. The only place I see AMD failing is in permoting their new Athelon. They need to advertize, get the word out! Being into computer and hardware I knew about the Athelon a few years ago, I read the press relase naming the Athelon the Athelon. BUT, A lot of people (mostly the non elite, non techie types) have no idea what the Athelon is, let alone understand the differences between the Athelon and say the Intel PIII.. AMD NEEDS to find a way to get word of their chip out to consumers! To date I have only seen one Athelon in newspaper adds, surrounded by 7 or 8 PIII's! This had better change, AMD needs to make their chips not only better, but more popular! This does not mean just lowering the prices, people (believe it or not) like to pay more money, it makes them feel as if they have the best their is! And with AMD lwering their prices for came clock speed ships ad Intel, AMD is saying to the ignorant consumer, "Our chips are less superior than Intel, thus we lower our prices in hopes that you will buy one of our chips" But in reality this is far from the case!
But as I see it, AMD is makeing it's self a contendor, not just for today's market, but also for the future. Intel can only keep up these small changes in it's chips for so long, AMD has made that jump, they are leading the technology, not Intel. If AMD found a way to get word out to Consumers (Other than the techie elite) they would steal a lot of Intels business. So if you want a stock tip, BUY AMD! I am pretty sure I am going to. (If you make lots of money off of this stock tip be sure to send some of it my way, I am broke:)
Note: I am in favor of AMD kicking Intels butt. I like AMD and I think they are a good company, working on good things, for the good of the comsumer. I do not really see this in Intel. I seem to compare what Intel has in the CPU business to what Microsoft has in the OS business.. Neither of which I like or try to support... Thus this post may be a bit biased, but hey, I LOVE my AMD K6.
Now that I think about it I have no idea why I listen to geeks in space.. It is humerous at times. For some reason I enjoy it. I am surprised not more people listen to it (I am just guessing by the number of comments here).
The actual "news" mentioned in Geeks in Space is very minimal, if not just a casual reference, and a joke about it (which is probably a good thing). Who knows, maybe you guys could start puting more of these things together, maybe make some more spacific sound clips, for example, discuss what is happening with Intel and AMD exclusively and give you own opinions/ predictions. This would be a completely different thing than geeks in space (Geeks in space is just a few guys getting together, puting on a show and having fun.. The latter is a bunch of guys getting together and "trying" to have a indepth discussion.) I guess what I am getting at, is that I would like to be able to get more indepth on spacific topics (of cource ones that interest you guys and one that you have somthing to say about), but the spacific topics should not take the place of Geeks in Space.
Special guests are allright, like has been stated allready, I don't care either way. You guys are entertaining enough! But it is nice to have different people's ideas represented.
You ever think of doing a show live? That would be very cool. Set up a chat room, and run real audio brodcasting live. Then we can hear you guys talking, and you can see what we are typing in the chat. You could also set it up so that people that wanted to add to the conversation could call in and talk to ya (Their was somthing like this set up for the BETA of Homeworld.. Of cource I called in and asked them about porting to Linux:) But it was a good, fun way communicate. Just have the show once a week (or wahtever you chose) and have a set time. I'd be there!
Another reason I think people like Geeks in Space is that it makes their be actual personalities behind Slashdot. It not just a bunch of technical talk (which is good, and I like) but it makes the people that use the technology have personalities, and lives outside of their computers (at least somewhat:)
Anyway's, I would like to say Good job. Evrything that you guys have done I have enjoyed and found interesting (and even addicting).
Some of you I am sure have alway's wondered, "exactly what kind of stress does the slashdot effect have on a server?" Well, this is a good chance for you to find out. Just look at the numbers of visitors per hour, for the last 3 days. Wow, now that jump from under 100, to over 1,000 (This was at about 1:15) is a huge jump. It is also interesting to note the number of slashdot users that registered. I am sure this will be a record day for the number of registrations at the Linux Counter. Actually a good thing.
We at Shalshdot have put put behind the reigns of a very powerful beast, and I don't think we can contain it. Actually, I think that is kind of cool.
You would think that the slashdot effect would be minimal if not at all on a NASA computer. Go figure. I really wanted to see the pics too.. Guess I will have to try again in another 12 hours! We really should put the/. effect to work.. We could take over the world just with the/. effect! It is amazing how much Slashdot has grown, and how sucessful it has become. Way to go Rob.
I mean come on.. Make a banner really quick, put it on top of Slashdot page advertizing the fact that they need help with the contest and lets get on with it.. Other than that I don't see what the point of this being on Slashdot is.. Does anyone else? Tell tell me that their is a contest on the internet? To get people that know about technology (and Linux in particular) to help out with this scavenger hunt? hmm..
According to Overclocking.dk prices for the unit will be anywhere from $800 to $850 USD. Not too bad considering that a Kryotec case would cost you about $2,000 for the same ammount of cooling. I for one think this product would be very cool. Yet, I have no money so will probably never be able to afford one, at least not until everyone has one.
Actually, It was on TV.. I remember it now. I usually listen to the TV and read slashdot at the same time.. That way, in a very, very rare case, taht their is somthing on TV taht is even remotely interesting I don't miss it while reading slashdot. So it was on TV, not on Slashdot. But to me it was actually fairly old news. Anyway's, on with the discussion..
((So many different media types to keep track of.. Can't wait for the neural implant:p
I remember reading the same thing.. I don't know if it was on slashdot or I saw it on the news, but I remember it, and it was actually quite a long time ago. At least 2 weeks ago.. Oh well..
I seem to remember attacks like this being a big thing about 2 or 3 years ago. Well, not a big thing, but big enough that it existed and was a threat. In fact, I think Milworm (Don't quote me on this) used an attack similar to this to gain access to Packistans (or some country over there) government computers, including some sensative information about Nuclear weapons. They made the attack go through the US Governments Dential plan servers ((This is all from memory, this happened well over a year ago)).. The the point is that this has happened many times, and the whole idea of "Distributed" hacking is not a new one. Why all of a sudden it is a big deal, and a major threat to the world as we know it I don't know. Mayby if instead of complainging about the problem they would just go in and figure out how to stop it, and move on to the next thing.. don't tell me that their is a problem that needs to be fixed, tell me that you have the solution to the problem and where I can go to get this problem taken care of.
What does it matter is my ideas are expressed on the net using a $50 PC or a $10,000 PC? Does it change my ideas any? This law should not apply to web sites. At least not in this fasion. Maybe is their was a law specifically saying (in abstract political mumbo jumbo), "all web pages, containing political views, to be used to aid in a canidates campain, must be registered with _____.." etc. But judging somone's ideas by the cost of the computer they are on is bogus.
Think about it.. This will change Linux a lot.. Everything for Linux (nearly everything) is open source. This is a good thing. But as soon as programs like this make it possible for Linux to run Windows apps, most of which are closed source, then we lose. Us open sourcers are still sucking Microsoft's tit for all it's worth (If that makes sence?) What is the point of Linux? I am sure this answer is different for everyone. I don't want Microsoft to come in, create a way for all Microsoft products and programs designed to run in Windows to be ran in Linux. It may sound nice to be able to use Microsoft Office, or IE, or other programs like that in Linux. But what are we willing to give to be able to do it? Are you willing to let Microsoft have their take in the Open Source field? Are you going to let them come in, and add to Linux for their own profit? Personally I would rather use a program some guy spent his time on makeing work right and efficiently, then some Microsoft Bloatware, that a team wrote not because they wanted to, but because that was their job. Which method turns out quality? I agree that the individual will not alway's come up with the better program..
Also, on the flip side. (Now this will get you thinking).. Is this really a smart move on Microsoft? Are they really getting rid of the Open Source community, trying to nudge them out? I think not! Think of what this would transform Linux into. Now Linux would be able to efficiently and stably run windows apps. Hmm.. Can Windows run UNIX apps in the same fasion? Now Linux will be able not only to run it's programs, but also Windoes programs, thus replaceing 2 computers. But a Windows machine will still leave you looking for the features of a Linux Machine.. Thus, a Linux machine would be able to effectively perform all the tasks of not only a Linux machine, but also a Windows NT machine.. As for Windows, it is still lacking a lot in terms of being able to perform well as a Linux/ UNIX machine.. This is also a good thing for the Linux Community. The main reason for a Windows user not to change to Linux is that their programs (Which they have grown to love) don't work on Linux! They don't want to leave what they know behind to learn somthing new. That is how life goes. With this people would be able to run their favorite programs. This is a nice thing to be able to do. And I personally would like to be able to do it also.
((I think I have argued both sides. But that's OK. They are my thaughts. I feel that they offer a little insight as to what is happening. What Microsoft want to accomplish I can only guess..))

How long would that last? If the software is open source I would imagine that somone would descide to add to it at one point or another, adding the features that HP wants to charge you for. I don't really see how long HP can hope to make money this way. Of cource they may make some, it would take a while for somone to get the source code and descide that they wanted to make additions to the software that makes it more functional in different applications. But how long would this take? Would it ever happen? If this software is truely great it would. And if it is truely great that would only dissapoint HP even more, considering they were the ones that spent the original time, principle, and effort to make the program possible.
:)
This is the revolution software needs to go into the new millennium, on a whole new level of quality and functionality (not to mention ported to Linux
((Just adding more ideas))
The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck,
is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners...
But, I'm over it))
Just think, the .18 micron process was somthing that WAS a long way off..
:) and the best.
:)
I am gald that this new found "competition" in the chip industry has finally blossomed. AMD had a presence before, but that was all, now AND is pressing to be herd. It will be a long hard battle, one that not only needs to be won by having the biggest (err, in the chip market the smallest
(If you make lots of money off of this stock tip be sure to send some of it my way, I am broke
:) But it was a good, fun way communicate. Just have the show once a week (or wahtever you chose) and have a set time. I'd be there!
:)
:))
Of cource I called in and asked them about porting to Linux
Another reason I think people like Geeks in Space is that it makes their be actual personalities behind Slashdot. It not just a bunch of technical talk (which is good, and I like) but it makes the people that use the technology have personalities, and lives outside of their computers (at least somewhat
Anyway's, I would like to say Good job. Evrything that you guys have done I have enjoyed and found interesting (and even addicting).
((OK, enough brown noseing for one post
Some of you I am sure have alway's wondered, "exactly what kind of stress does the slashdot effect have on a server?" Well, this is a good chance for you to find out. Just look at the numbers of visitors per hour, for the last 3 days. Wow, now that jump from under 100, to over 1,000 (This was at about 1:15) is a huge jump. It is also interesting to note the number of slashdot users that registered. I am sure this will be a record day for the number of registrations at the Linux Counter. Actually a good thing.
:)
We at Shalshdot have put put behind the reigns of a very powerful beast, and I don't think we can contain it. Actually, I think that is kind of cool.
Note to self: Beware of slashdot effect
You would think that the slashdot effect would be minimal if not at all on a NASA computer. Go figure. I really wanted to see the pics too.. Guess I will have to try again in another 12 hours! We really should put the /. effect to work.. We could take over the world just with the /. effect! It is amazing how much Slashdot has grown, and how sucessful it has become. Way to go Rob.
I'm gonna win!
((MY STORY ACTUALLY MADE IT ON SLASHDOT!))
:p
((So many different media types to keep track of.. Can't wait for the neural implant
