    if the copy "protection" (prevention) works in linux...

    securom/starforce/etc restriction technologies require a driver be installed and running at all times in order for them to prevent copies being used on windows.

    ironic that people who download copied games have a much easier time playing than people who run out, give the companies 50 bucks and come home to an unplayable game due to onerous restrictions.

    too many games nowadays each install their own "driver" and if you have many games installed like many do, you exponentially increase your chances of instability (more so than usual), conflicts and downright crashes.

    another thing that's absurd is that most new games will complain after being installed and not run or will not install if you have nero or other cd recording programs installed. also if you have alcohol 120% or daemon tools.

    didn't it ever occur to publishers, that having those tools installed would only screw over the people who bough the games legitimately? because infringers would never have to deal with that bullshit. they go out of their way with time and money to introduce these offensive, unstable "protection" technologies yet vehemently argue that it prevents "piracy"? yet, "pirates" are the ones who are the least inconvenienced and hindered...

    something just doesn't add up.

    pissing off your paying customers is one of the few things you don't want to do... i wonder where they went to business school?

    you don't value freedom.

    linux and windows work well enough for their respective users. and while linux has freedom in spades, windows doesn't. osx doesn't.

    the future of computing (20+ years) is Free as in Freedom software.

    proprietary will die a slow death over the next few decades. well unless the DRM cabal can get the hw manufacturers to lock out Free software.

    Digital Freedom will be far more important in the 21st century than it was in the 20th. the more DRM and other restrictions they bring, the more people will realize the importance of software and its associated Freedom.

    the Right to Read is coming more true every day.

    in 20 years, there may not even be a distinction in processors anymore.

    you would have generic self-configuring processors (think fpga but more advanced) with 1024+ cores per module... more modules = more speed (more heat). dynamically programmable and able to execute any task with extreme optimization without the overhead of asics.

    or maybe not.

    so even if 95% of america had no fiber optic connections, at least the very large cities would... right?

    it's 2005 (2006 soon), where are the high speed broadband connections in america?

    then what about dense metropolitan areas, like new york and los angeles? they have so many people living in a small area they should all have 100megabit fiber connections to their homes.

    clearly, at least some parts of america should have very high speed, low cost connections.

    but the best you can get is 8megabits... paying through the nose for a "business" account... which still has a very low speed upload.

    unless you're willing to fork out 5k a month for a t3, give up your dreams for low cost high speed internet access in america. move to japan or sweden.

    politics in america is a totalitarian and fascists wet dream. they have it too well made to let the little people whom they suck dry of their wealth to have any say in what goes on in their country.

    in a business transaction, there are merchants/vendors then there are customers.

    citizen might be a useful alternative if you equate consumer with "anyone who does business with corporations and has no control of their "representatives"

    why is it that all discussions about digital and high speed networking must bring up the wicked word "piracy".

    it just reeks of RIAA/MPAA propoganda...

    sort of like how a honda civic, since it can't go very fast must have a very low incidence of vehicular death yet ferrari's must be associated with high mortality rate due to accidents.

    hmmm....

    i recall people trading floppy disks in the 80's... cd roms in the 90's, dvds in the 00's...

    hmmm...

    someone inevitably brings up "piracy"... i wonder why... since we all know it's only the greed of the isp's with federally mandated monopolies.

    selling accessories to end users have ANYTHING to do with apple?

    once an ipod is sold to a customer, apple no longer has any say over what happens to that device or how it interacts with any other devices.

    getting permission is NOT required by moral law. legal laws are completely obscene. and even there, there might be ways of not bending over to corporate interests.

    that's the definition of property laws. if you own property, you can do just about anything you want, barring things which can cause death or injury.

    no one needs "permission" to make accessories for any device. but that's what DRM is for. now you're getting the hang of it. without DRM and DMCA, it would be a simple matter for people to exercise their property rights.

    now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

    that would be the key difference.

    even more so if you go against the mainstream propoganda and "allowed" line of thinking.

    the fbi has extensive files on political activists and "peaceniks", which is against the constitution and other laws of the land.

    so yeah, if you're a good little lemming, you can stay warm and safe for a while longer. but if you have a brain and are observant about the crimes they commit, then watch out. no wonder they're attacking blogs day in and day out... it's a flow of information they cannot control 100%.

    stick your head in the sand but remember to keep your butt protected... someone could get an unsavory idea.

    you cannot sign in cyberspace (at least not without a graphics tablet...).

    puts EULAs into a new perspective, doesn't it?

    software doesn't require a license, regardless of how many software industry shills tell you otherwise. same thing for web sites, but the only difference is that web "software" can change at any time and your data is constantly being transmitted to some database. in that case, they have all the power, even more so when you're under the illusion of a "privacy policy" that's not worth the electrons it's made out of.

    the brave new world isn't much fun. can we go back home, mommy?

    that's why you can't do cool new things on x86 pc's... you'd risk losing one of the prime reasons to use x86: compatibility.

    hell, motherboards still come with floppy connectors. why? because some ancient or niche programs still require a floppy to use. winxp still only accepts drivers for hd's on a floppy only.

    and frankly, the bios or initialization hardware shouldn't be doing much more than just probing the hardware and passing control to an OS. anything more and you risk DRM like abilities... minimalism is truly the best way to go. extensible minimalism... if that's not a contradiction.

    to some degree it is.

    everything has its ups and downs, pros and cons.

    i prefer buying my computer components piecemeal. i can upgrade my computer every 2 years to a top of the line x86 system for $600. if i were to go to a mac, i'd have to chuck my whole system and buy a brand new one. obviously i can't afford to spend 2500 bucks every 2 years, i'm not that rich. and apple won't sell just the motherboards and cpus. hell, they even won't let you install the software (macosx) on anything other than what they tell you you can (not that EULAs are binding or anything).

    i've been spoiled by cheap computers. i cannot go back to the 90's and buy a whole new computer every couple of years.
