they're being penalised for BREAKING THE LAW. They really need to understand that the EU sees them as CRIMINALS and not contributing members of society
Wrong again. Last I checked, heads of the EU didn't purchase jewels for jewel thieves or software from software pirates. However, they do purchase software and solutions from Microsoft. If they are the moral idealogues you claim them to be they should stop purchasing Microsoft software. Now.
They do see Microsoft as a contributing member of society. Overwhelmingly so. That's why they want things opened up, to contribute more, and on a different level (contribute not just products but knowlege.)
That, and, the big guy will always be the biggest target, be it by the little guy or the big government. A cool 2 million a day (iirc) in fines is nothing to scoff at for the EU. Probably finances a lot of hookers...
It's easier to configure then Debian, has a nice user interface and has included modern packages like 'x.org' and 'PHP5' for quite some time now.
Like Fedora Core... 4? Thats the grandparent's point. Theres 100 distros that have up to date packages. Whats so great about Ubuntu that have people crazy about it? I don't get it either. OK, I can see Ubuntu over Debian, but why over (other_distro)?
they're remarkably clueless of the world outside of wintel
Seeing as Apple has a 2.1-2.2% market share, and linux a little more than that, that means they have a clue about 90-95% of the market... that's pretty damn good.
You got to head hunt if you want the pick of the litter without too much training. You can contract them out or you can have a recruiter on staff.
Also, it seems that many people going to college for computer science/engineering aren't even learning the basics -- what colleges have you recent graduates gone to that have taught you real consulting skills, business sense and responsibility?
UAH did a pretty good job. Last two semesters are spent on a large scale engineering projects. The first semester is 4 people to a team, the second semester is a 10-12 person IPT (integrated product team) project for AMRDEC, a government customer. When I went through it we were designing a guided bullet, we did the conceptual design, modeling and simulation, and actually handed them a finished product (just a mechanical prototype). We went through all the stages of development, PDR, CDR, etc. Good school, highly recommend it to anyone pursuing MAE/AE.
(by the way I am 1 in a million... I actually want to get back to the midwest someday... my wife and I miss it. But not today. Got to finish my masters/PhD)
Try Huntsville, AL (mostly defense but we got some biotech and other firms). Try Silicon Valley. Theres plenty of tech places hiring if you take the initiative and look.
Too many tech workers have been saying "poor me" since the dot-com bubble burst. Too many tech workers aren't willing to move away from their town of 20k in search of a better life. I know kids fresh out of college pulling down close to 60k working IT and related fields. They were willing to do a little research and they got one hell of a reward.
He's just bitching because his $100 laptop can't use the cool eyecandy filled environments with the exact same application base as most modern expensive computers....and still fit the hardware footprint and budget. He wants the magic GNU Fairy to come and sprinkle pixy dust and wave a magic wand and instantly make Firefox, OO, KDE, and GNOME run on his hardware requirements.
You are absolutely right. One of his comments when he turned down Microsoft was that he had "thousands of open source programmers at his disposal"... well it isn't looking like it. Sad part is Windows CE probably would have provided the clean, cool eyecandy he wants... (and yea the source is available...) (conspiracy theorists: they sent reference boards to Microsoft)
I don't buy that core samples or ice samples are a valid metric. The only valid metric in my mind are samples taken at the time. See data corrupts over time, especially data sitting out in the open. I've had this conversation with my wife (a B.S. meteorologist, not the TV kind but the research kind) and I don't think I'm too unreasonable.
There are also a fair number of skeptics of realclimate, like this guy and here are a list of legitimate post RealClimate has deleted from their website that disagree with their contentions... based on that I'd consider them a biased source.
so sit back an enjoy the ride. Be true to yourself. Do what you need to do to sleep at night, and dont give a f*ck about what they say about global warming. Its been hot, its been cold, and we only have accurate weather data spanning about 100 years. If you think we can make accurate preditions based on 100 years of data (a piss in the bucket compared to the thousands or millions or billions of years this world has been in existance, depending on who you asked) then I have oceanfront property to sell you in Wisconsin, which was very cold last winter.

I take it you've worked for every ISP worth their salt? I've worked for a couple ISP's, most don't...
gMail saves your emails after you delete them. Even if you use IMAP. Other ISP's do NOT. See, Google is in the business of using your personal information to make money, and by saving it long enough and aggregating it they can see trends and make money.
I don't run my own web server but I have the next best thing - a good friend who is. And I know his email volume, he doesn't back up emails (most ISP's don't, google is the exception - remember advertising is their lifeblood) so when I delte them they are gone.
Be wary of google. They want to index the world's knowlege, they want to aggregate your life - make sure you want to give it up to them.

What if your work blocks webmail access? (I've seen that more often than I have seen USB ports potted, or port 23 blocked, or local executables not being able to be run... combined)
It has to be Open Source. That much is non-negotiable.
Again, you are putting ideologies before the mission. If closed source does it quicker, better, cheaper... you should choose the road that helps them the most effectively. Ideologies are blindsiding the project (And you... you ignored my post. My points must be valid enough that you couldn't argue them.)
And it's not a lot of extra effort do that for an Open Source OS such as GNU/Linux or one of the BSDs.
I take it you've never taken an app from MFC to linux before. And that's assuming they let you at the source. Didn't think so...
Being mainly Closed Source, the software you're talking about probably is quite sloppily written.
Holy flamebait. I've seen both closed source and open source. Most of the closed source I've seen is a lot prettier than the open source I've seen.
Educating people includes teaching people how computers work. Not just how to change the font in Microsoft Word or draw bell-ends in Paint Shop Pro or prevent chip pan fires with Welephant. How to create their own software. For that, you need a programming language and you need to read other people's Source Code. Please don't think this is cheating.
No shit. I have nothing against open source. However if you want to expedite the process you use what already exists. There are plenty of non-regionalized pieces of software that teach generic knowlege. There are plenty of frameworks that can be utilized, that have been utilized. No need to reinvent the wheel because "linux is cool!!!! omgz!!!!"... I've said it before and I'll say it again, the venture is gonna fail. He's already had to compromise on the hardware-there IS NO HAND CRANK, its now a "foot pedal that a four year old will have to crank while the 10 year old is using it", and its a "$135 notebook"... but that's not the real reason why, its the software. He only has half the equation. And he's 35% over budget on that.
You're not trying to make kernel hackers. You are trying to teach them the basics. How to read, write. How to avoid STD's. How to raise crops. Economics. Government. Kernel hacking and computer science IS NOT THE POINT!!!
It can be used anywhere by just plugging your thumb drive in with the security of SSH. And you get the benefit of no targeted advertizing (And no company aggregating your life's communications...)
come on man, learn some english. "may be..." "will be". It is conjecture at this point. They haven't said that naked boxes correlate to piracy, but they said that if future sales (will be = future tense) correlate, they may have to look into it.
To use the "giving someone a fish vs. teaching them how to fish" cliché, Microsoft et al want to teach people to fish -- but only as a reason to sell them bait. Negroponte's initiative starts out with teaching people how to fish and ensuring they can get their own bait.
No, thats where you are wrong. They want to create a means to educate. See, huge, vast libraries of educational software exist under Windows. Even educational frameworks that are adaptable to new educational software exist and are available for free or cheap. Such offerings DO NOT EXIST under linux. This is an area Linux is very weak in, and has been acknowleged, and is trying to be worked on - Edubuntu, k12linux.org, etc. But it still doesn't match the 15+ years of Windows software that has accumulated. While Negroponte has a device, he doesn't have the software yet. Had he picked Windows, he'd be almost there with the software. I thought we were trying to educate the children...
"I can confirm that the... personnel are not participating in customer visits. This is an error in the copy and will be amended in future material on the subject," Alexander claimed.
Alexander also insisted that Microsoft was simply trying to help its reseller partners by explaining how they could grow their businesses by selling its software and services. But she did reiterate that the software giant is concerned that the sale of base systems may be linked to the use of counterfeit software.
"There will be a concern if we see an increase in businesses selling PCs without Windows and piracy goes into the sky," said Alexander, who also rejected the suggestion that Microsoft was attempting to use its powerful position in the market to hamper rival operating systems. (emphasis mine)
