- mac market share has declined to 2.1-2.2% according to both IDC and Gartner
- mac sales have halved since Jobs took the helm of Apple
- iPods are the big seller
- the shift to conventional x86 hardware
I'm not convinced that they are going to abandon OSX but there is a definite shift towards consumer hardware. Their computers have gotten easier (their using conventional x86 hardware like everyone else, etc) and focusing on the iPods... you can see where their focus lies.
Are people really going to pay 25% of the cost of the machines for the OS?
We're talking about middle-class (americans/europeans)? Sure. that's what, 1-2 hours of labor? That's nothing to get an OS you are familiar with that will run the applications you already own. You are being penny wise and pound foolish, I have a closet full of software I have accumulated over the years, you think I will throw it away over a $50 difference in price over 2 computers? Now yea, I can use wine, but my parents cannot, and I don't have time time (And buying me a plane ticket to set it up is more than $50) so it is a win to buy the Windows box.
For a new consumer? I give BSD a little better than mac's share: 5%. People know Windows. They've used Windows. $50 isn't that much anymore.
No, actually, Bill Gates offered to help on the project, he offered free copies of a lite version of Windows along with technical help. Negroponte blew him off, making several rude comments. That started this whole publicity debacle.
Right. And the magical moral police are gonna pop out of the sky, slap them on the wrist and say "no, naughty boys, you can't take those from the children"
We are talking about the black market. I don't think they will care that the item says "Not for Sale".
Get real. In countries with political and economic turmoil anything goes.
Throughout the History of Humanity, education started with litteracy. Learning how to read and write.
What prevents a program running on a laptop from teaching children how to read and write without being constantly in the presence of a teacher?
Explain to me how a computer can teach a child to write. Curious minds wish to know... You can draw the characters on the screen but you can not validate the input. Feedback is critical to the learning process: therefore the computer fails at teaching the children to write without some form of feedback (a watcom pad, etc... not included at the now-over-$100 sticker price).

In an MMORPG, its against policy to sell in-game items to other players.
SOE changed that. There are authorized servers where this is allowed through official means. This allows the game creators to monitor the traffic and make sure no one gets ripped off. (they do take a cut, I believe.) EQ and EQ2.
In single player RPGs, its policy to sell in-game items to players. Now I'm confused.
These are external mods. Downloading one for your game doesn't affect the gameplay of others.
I've gotten 20 legit emails already this morning. I'm on 2 moderate traffic mailing lists and use email for work. Not to mention spam (I don't even see it, the filters take care of it...)
VMware will too, it doesn't matter so long as you don't want to do remote administration. If you are just tinkering around with it at home it really doesn't matter. And if you have XP Pro, you have a free copy of IIS on that XP install CDROM.
seeing as mac has about a 2.2-2.3% market share according to both IDC and Gartner, I don't think the demand is all that great compared to the remaining 98%. Besides Virtual Server is aimed at... wait for it... the server environment, same as (VMware's) ESX/GSX, where the Mac community is typically looking at end user content.
and besides... you can dual boot XP now, you can run Virtual Server.
But you bet your ass developers do. As developers start to notice that the percentage of users are declining - who cares if there are more mac users, the percentage of the market share is declining, meaning they can hit more target users by targeting Windows and Linux than by targeting Windows and Mac, or than by even targeting Linux and Mac. 2%?!?! When developers start to jump ship then they have nothing left and the stock market will care. The stock market is not just numbers, it never has been and it never will be. It has always been about emotions. Bull market and bear market, not a 0 market and a 1 market.
OK, you covered the splits, you didn't cover the other factors.
Another thing you have to look at: Apple really didn't do shit until 18 months ago. Look back at the trend another poster put up over the last 5 years. Microsoft outpaced Apple (barely)until 2004. Then Apple shot up (iPod sales). But look at the trend, Apple is on the down swing. Will they recover? Who knows. Here's an interesting tidbit (posted on digg but not on/. cause we all know/. is all about teh apple luvins)... Apple has only sold half as many Macs since Jobs has taken the helm. Are they shifting to a consumer electronics company? You bet, but they are losing the little tiny sliver of a market share they had. And how long do you think they can survive on iPods alone?
If this tool licker gave an ass about the user experience he would give this phoney patent to "the internet".
Eolas has said before they are just out to get Microsoft. They have said they won't come after Mozilla. All they care about is money. Regardless, Microsoft is doing the right thing given the position. Make the change, don't license to a crappy patent.
Man, the first people who buy these babies are either crazy, stupid
And yet the people who blew $2500+ on the first run of apple MacBook Pro's werent crazy or stupid, weren't they? Funny how perception changes based on the product and the vendor...
Sucks to be apple :) I did know that their present offerings are all 32 bit but it is only a matter of time before they make the leap...
The next CTP is supposed to (does? I haven't gotten my hands on it...) have it.

64 bit vista has EFI
32 bit vista does not

It's all do-able with a strong federal leadership.
So more regulation is good when it accomplishes what you want, but bad otherwise? I'm confused...

All macs will now be gBooks, you can buy your gPod and get music on gTunes. All theyre gonna do is search-and-replace appple.com replacing i with g...
I heard the name might be change to something like Grape or something.
you have to look at splits and other factors. That really means absolutely nothing.

The same thing had been said about Yahoo!, WebCrawler, HotBot, AltaVista, etc. You have your day in the sun. Enjoy it, Google.
Now I'm not saying Ask is going to take it. But plenty of search engines have had their day. And more have yet to come.
