Humans++ => Human Capital++ => Inovation++ => Real Price--.
Julian Simon laid this out quite clearly. He even put $10,000 on the line in a bet with Paul Ehrlich that his idea was correct, and won.
This is a government run fire protection service, not the libertarian privately run one. The big difference is the incentive or lack of incentive of the public service to respond. A private company could surely respond, then stick the homeowner for a large bill.
You can certainly pay the full bill for this type of service. Maybe not right away, but over a year it could easily be done.
Healthcare can likewise be paid out of pocket. The purpose of insurance is for situations where a person could not financially handle a sudden large liability. Like cancer. Not like fire protection services.
Except that this was a government run service, not a private one. A libertarian paradise would have a private firefighting service that would stick you with a huge bill if you didn't pay yearly dues. Not enough incentive / bad legal structure with this government run fire protection.
Except that this was a government run service, not a private one. A private company would certainly have a profit incentive to fight the fire and stick the homeowner with a huge bill.
Remember, this is a government run service, not private. A private company would see a big profit to be made in fighting the fire and sicking the homeowner with a huge bill.
48 SATA drives onboard a 4U rack, dual six-core opterons, redundant power supply. This thing won't let you down. Go big and heavy with this and it'll cost $1/GB.

Make sure to ask for a discount, only suckers pay full price for Oracle gear.
A single backup using rsync isn't going to cut it. Imagine backing up corrupted data, overwriting other stuff. Also, having all backups on the same network is a bad idea if malware ever gets in. Your second level of backup should probably be tape, making a monthly and a yearly backup. Then store the tapes in a concrete and steel fire safe. Tape has longevity that your other options don't.
Whats crazy is that the 2nd place team as of this writing is Principia College, a school of only 500 students and no engineering dept or major. If they pull out a win it could go down as one of the biggest upsets in college sports(?) history.
Of course they would need to beat a team that has millions in funding and its own satellite for weather data and a team of meteorologists.
While those that read slashdot come from many different background, I do not feel this is a topic most readers are equipped to answer. I would even say that this is a dangerous topic, because with economics many people feel like they know a lot more than they actually do. Note that the description of the story tried to indirectly relate higher Gini coefficients with higher murder rates. While it might be true that Brazil does have these two conditions, is is much less likely so that one caused the other. Remember, when we look at statistics of a country we are looking at a very complex organism. To be able to point out one or two things as causes is very tough to do, and many times there will be lurking variables that are never caught in the analysis. Now, to put in my two cents. Income inequality is a fact of life, resulting from the fact that epople are created with different abilities and are raised in different enviorments. To say that greater income inequality is bad, we would have to say that there is an optimal point of inequality. This point would not be at the zero mark, since then there would be absolutely no reason to work harder or engage in entrepreneurial efforts, since it would never really bring you ahead. We need a certain amount to encourage people and to reward tehm for helping others. Where this point lies is an utter mistery, if there indeed does exist such a point. Finally, remember that the Gini coefficient is not the best measure of inequality. By studying the lorenz curve in full, we can get a better picture as to qho is actually falling behind or not benefitting from growth. Do not assume more enequality is bad or good, becuase we don't have enough information about what the optimal level is
but do these things actually help golfers that much? They may just be a way to suck money out of rich people who can afford to throw their money down the drain (or hole in this case)
There are always things for rich people to try to save a stroke or two on their gamek, but determination will always win out
It is only an addiction if it causes harm to other aspects of your life. Sine i cna find no chemicals that affect your brain coming from cell phones, the choice to use technology must be voluntary and made with a sound mind. People then are able to reason that they value tech more than the money, and so it shouldn't matter how much they spend, even if you wouldn't spend that much. Everyone likes different things.
The whole debate about productivity is pointless. I say tech is more productive becuase it satisfies our wants, better than anything else, otherwise we would be buying those things
If you are trying to put down a story because of its source you might want to consider a better target next time as the christian science monitor is a very respectable newspaper and has won numerous awards for its unbiased reporting and taking the high moral ground by not attacking people

agreed!
Or because governments don't have to make a profit doing it, making it very hard for private companies to compete and stay afloat.
