  23. X Rules! on Ask Slashdot: Comparing the GUIs · · Score: 1

Comparing the other windowing systems (Win/GDI, Mac, etc.) is like comparing a PeeCee to a UNIX workstation or a toy yard tractor to a back hoe.

X makes graphical client-server work. Other models that I've seen vary from marginal (WinFrame) to pretty schnazzy (QNX-Neutrino).

WinNT, etc. is not even in the game when it comes to this aspect. If I had a nickel for every time I had to run into the server room at a client site to do something at the console on an NT host I'd be as rich as Billy Gee. With a real OS: gee, just telnet in and/or export your display. It ain't rocket science.

Comparing GUIs, well that is just look and feel. Windows sucks, imnsho. Great way to rip neat features from other GUIs (notably NeXT) and then screw up the implementation. It's one fugly ucker. OS/2 WPS was butt ugly in a Motif kind of way (ugh!) but at least it did the object oriented desktop environment properly.

The Mac OS is very refined for look and feel - so much so that I use the E-Mac GTK/E-themes on my personal machines.

BeOs is cute looking. Grates on my nerves after a little while, kind of like Rasterman's funky E themes. Looks pretty but functional?

  24. Well, that's really dumb... on Amiga to use Linux Kernel · · Score: 1

I was wondering if the Amiga group had any business sense or if they are just playing around and using up grants/investor's money.

To dump QNX and use Linux is a very stupid move, imnsho.

QNX does RT. Does it properly. It was designed with RT in mind from the ground up. Multimedia without proper RT is a bad thing. Look at how much hardware you have to throw at the existing OS's to do MM properly.

    QNX is small and complete.

Changing to Linux at this point strikes of a under-priveldged sibling calling out "I want a blue one too!" even if there is a perfectly good red one sitting in their lap.

Re: free software versus payware. Do you really think that Amiga will be free? QNX is _heavily_ discounted based on projected number of units sold - the cost of using QNX vs Linux is negligible - especially when you factor in R&D costs. At least with QNX there is someone being paid to write driver X on a schedule as opposed to having some people on the 'net coding it up in their free moments.

Don't get me wrong, I love Linux and use it exclusively on my personal machines (some have never even seen a Windows disk(ette)).

For Amiga to be changing the underlying substructure at this point sounds like a nail in the coffin. Maybe the final one?

  25. Re:Splintering is the hobgoblin of cheap lumber on Re: The Charity Case for Red Hat · · Score: 1

    Indeed!

Most "journalists" seem to miss the central theme about Linux: there is no splintering to be done - Linux is so splintered already who would notice the difference?

I truly believe that 90% of all industry journalists out there that write about Linux, FreeBSD, OpenSource, et al have no concept of what these technologies are about, where they came from, and what was the reason why they occured in the first place.

But that's OK. I fear the day that any of the free OSes make the transition to mainstream. Things are just peachy the way they are.
