  1. Re:SHENANIGANS! on Dell Offering "Open" PC · · Score: 5, Interesting

I have a Dell Premier login so I can configure machines for our company, and send the e-quote to our purchasing rep. Dell lists a bunch of "standard configurations" on the first page. If I choose an Optiplex GX 520 MT and configure it, for example, it costs more than if I go under Systems and choose the Optiplex GX 520 MT there. Some comparisons ... moving from the 40GB SATA hard drive to an 80GB SATA II hard drive costs $16.15, and changing to an optical mouse costs $11.90 on the standard configuration GX 520. If I do the same by going under Systems, the hard drive upgrade costs $11.25 and the mouse upgrade costs $10.50. Shenanigans is right!

  2. Re:I've used Verizon and Cingular on Cell Phone Service as High Speed Internet Link? · · Score: 1

I'd have to agree that the Verizon card is the way to go, unless you know you won't be in an EV/DO-equipped area. One of the benefits that the card has vs. a normal cell phone is that it uses a different network. So if you're at an event where there are too many cell phones, so their network won't let you connect, the cards will still work. Another consideration you should look at is to change the MTUs of your computer to a very low number. The cell phone towers tend to fragment packets and not ask for them to be resent (they were designed for voice, not data). We had to do this to let ftp work through the cell phone cards.

  3. Re:Nikon on Nikon Responds to Encryption Claims · · Score: 3, Insightful

There's no way 80 percent of pro photographers use Nikon. With the current dismal crop of D2s they've released, photographers are dropping Nikon and moving to Canon as fast as they can afford it. I work for a major newspaper chain, and every paper is looking to find a way to switch to Canon. Why? The newer Nikon cameras have a reddish cast, and lots of noise in the shadow areas. If you want quality, use Canon, or better yet, stay with film.
