Heard another Commissioner discuss how giving the FTC authority was better than the FCC.
Lying bastards. Destruction of the net is both their priority and the worst thing that could happen.
Oh, Trump voters... people who may have had to rely on the WWW for your deplorable opinions...does this one bother you ?
You'd think a group who is convinced that the liberals own all media would be sensitive to losing a place to discuss their views. Sadly, the Trump voter is too stupid...they think he's a morals candidate...we can't ask for understanding the first amendment
I used to pay taxes monthly to the bank. Every month, I sent a decent sum to the govt for not much.
One day, I was told no more. I needed to go "on Line" and pay that way....not only the Feds, but New York State too....
Now, I go online, and like sort of the inverse of buying stuff on Amazon, I pay taxes.
I am required to do it this way.
The internet is the post office.
"put your business first on the internet"
"your website will load just as fast as your competitors"
"make sure your potential customers don't die of old age waiting for your site to load"
This wonderful package is available for only XX99.99 more than your current package. Call Today !!!
bastards
I've a Premier, which will stream, but very, very slowly. I use an older Mac Mini for streaming, no problem and no buffering wtih 1080p out. I had cable card in some Sony HDD 250 and when they died/were abandoned by Sony and Rovi I got the Premier. It's long paid for lifetime. I used cablecard when I had cable.
1. Back to the Future. Do you live near a transmitter, and can you put up an antenna (tvfool.com)
2 If yes, then you need a DVR. Tivo is the easy way for a price. ChannelMaster is almost as good but cheaper-some tech involved.
3. Streaming beyond that is Youtube, a borrowed username and password or a legit username and password. Some channels are locked unless you pay a CableCo for a land subscriotion-bastards !!! Let's just say one could find TopGear, and Grand Tour and Discovery without even really knowing anything....
I get to see cable occasionally when in a hotel. You can't watch without a DVR and half of it is now adverts..for crap
Cable bill..hey, cable TV...no commercials.... OK.. Broadband better than DSL ? OK.
TV too, OK. Feed the whole house. CableCo scrambles all signals "for piracy". You need to rent a box for $8 per month per TV and suffer an egregious Guide. Three TV sets. Commercial load making any non DVR watching impossible.
Send another new bill. Now, $7 per month "Sports Fee". Don't watch or subscribe to any sports. ESPN needs my money ? They are not even a government....so $8x3x12 + $7x12.
= $374
You just boosted me a car payment for absolutely nothing ?
So far, freedom has meant allowing a destruction of net neutrality...allowing ISP to sell your browser history, and destruction of locally sourced news so some anodyne studio can put out bland non-news like radio DJs.
I get that you wanted a shit disturber, but the only disturbance is allowing Companies to do whatever they want...not even a bone tossed to the rest of us.
Thanks, flyover.
Look at the ads in TV news. All drugs for horrible old age disease (and they all make the grandkids come visit !) and Medicare Plus plans. I record the major nets, watch the first five minutes. You can also go left with Democracy Now, euro with BBC News and/or DW.
This is a crappy ruling...the bottom tier of broadcasters is about to be unemployed, the whole farm system of baby broadcasters are going to need to take that job selling cars. Local Government ? High School Sports ? Your community ? Not important.
That's what I did to a core2duo mini. SSD and RAM maxed out. Still working as a media center, even if Amazon down-rezes the picture because the Thunderbolt port is one iteration before HDCP nonsense.
If you Open Save and Print, with occasional video, you don't need anything newer. The Core2Duo can run 1080p. Ok, I wouldn't game on it, but for internet video, seamless.
How can you possibly rate anything not produced ? I know that Tesla is inside the Reality Distortion Field. Jobs left it to Musk in his Will, but how can you rate a car in beta, er, pre production ? Do CR writers have some Tesla in the 401 (k) ?
I've sat through cycles of lights as everyone HAS TO FINISH TEXTING before pulling away. Watch. LIght goes green. Nothing happens. Car one moves.....car two moves....car three.....dit....dit...dit...moves. Light changes red.
Don't even get me started about how smartphones are the default for pedestrians. Vision Zero means you never need to look before crossing a street, because it is ALWAYS the driver's fault.
That was my straw. The Sports Fee was $7 per month. I tried to wonder what Disney - ESPN was thinking, then I realized it was basic arrogance. "snip". My cable co raised the broadband $10 per month when I tossed the cable.
I'd already gone through a year of mandatory cable boxes, then they became $8 per month, per box, all so the cable co can turn my service on and off without a truck roll. I thought using Tivo and cable card would be OK, but then they said "aha ! Sports Fee"
I'm lucky I live on a street with FiOS and Cable. FiOS was nice, but the old school Bell Tel tax load wasn't. Also, they still thought like in 1965, that call forwarding was an exotic service. The only result is that I won't see a cap on my service because competition.
I now have two lifetime Tivo and a ChannelMaster recorder hooked to a roof antenna. This covers 90 % of what I want, and DVR means no commercials. The usual Netflix and and yes, "We have considered Piracy" (princess bride) covers everything else. We've collected and shared a few passwords.
Watching my kids, they never watch what we consider "TV" at all. AT ALL. Plenty of video, but there isn't even a "tv show" the kids care about.
There's a reason all those commercials are for horrible drugs for diseases that hit old folks......
So, one year they send me two documents. One says "pci compliance". One is for data breach insurance. I do the PCI, and toss the insurance.
The next year, they send me PCI compliance, and charge me for the insurance. I call, tell them no, as I don't have any hackable databases, unless you break into my office and pull out handwritten credit card numbers from each individual file. I argue with them, and they tell me that it is mandatory. I read the policy, and find it is almost useless.
If I don't PCI, they charge me $20 per month "noncompliance fee". If I do, they then charge me a bit under $200 for this useless insurance anyway.
Meanwhile, someone goes to the front door and walks off with the whole database ? I know interchange is a huge ripoff and is in desperate need of renovation...if Africa can move money with a dumb-phone for a lower commission rate, then V/MC/AX need to die in a fire today...but WTF ? Meanwhile, I'm stuck with paying for insurance I can't use, with a system that is not easily electronically hackable (no stored numbers anywhere..period, and I use their portal to charge HTTPS).........
We had basic cable. It was analog, and OK. Over time, it carried internet. We dumped the DSL line (remember copper ?) and went with cable internet...where we've been save a brief and very expensive two years with FiOs. Lovely service, but all the telco taxes apply, which they don't with cable.
Cable then went digital QAM, which was OK, until they decided to scramble ALL signals and force you to pay $8 per month per box. I was able to avoid this due to cablecards in TiVos.
One month my bill goes up $7...."Sports Fee". Now, I don't watch sports, don't care, and don't subscribe.
Snip.
I'm happy to report that my $75 antenna gets all the local stations clearly. The OTA signal looks better than the CATV signal. My Tivo and ChannelMaster boxes record easily, and were amortized years ago.
Cable has way too many commercials. The few times I'm subjected to such a feed, in hotels, etc, make me turn it off....indeed, I avoid watching anything in real-time. How many drug commercials for horrible conditions can a person watch ?
The only thing left is to scam my in-laws password for a few streaming options that demand you subscribe to classic cable, which strikes me as having to buy a Steamer ticket to fly to London from New York. My kids already have a list of shared passwords for HBO and everything else.
I will be pirating CBS new Star Trek, cause that one is just an F-U.
Yes, I wanted to replace a classic analog FM tuner with an HD tuner. I discovered that there weren't any.
What ? You launch a new transmitter with no receiver ? WTF kind of business model is that ?
Sony made one...it is now up to $400 if you can get a working one on Ebay. No one else makes one.
They need to read about RCA and Dumont, who realized that folks needed receivers so they could sell transmitters....
Yup, as a fellow ham, I've learned more from Shadow Traffic, the internal ENG media frequencies, and PD Car-to-Car than the occasional traffic reports on the radio....a good dual band and some programming work and you are good !
I grew up with the AOR top-down radio system (the 80's). I went to school in a college town. The station owners broke a song there...if it took off, it went to NYC. I was stuck with the same playlist for months at a time....it sucked. Once it was played out in Boston, it was "a NEW SONG" in the NYC market....you never heard anything truly new in NYC.
We once tried to get a band to play our school. We were told by the band manager that even though we could afford them, and they wanted to play our school, the stadium owner and the radio station would then blackball them in the market for playing our school, as school concerts didn't make money for the machine.
My 20 year old just got a car. Her concerns were a) does it have Aux In, and b) is it a manual ? So much for millennialls all hating cars... AD2P is now in just about every car sold in the US, so....
My kids don't radio at all. Period. Spotify and other things downloaded to the phone, yes. I'm pretty sure my tech savvy 17 year old doesn't know how to use the car's radio part.
I still listen to NPR cause I'm an old guy and liberal, but beyond that and one classical station, I use occasional satellite radio (and their playlists have been taken over by the same leisure suit c-suckers that killed FM radio) and Spotify...the family plan gets me my old stuff AND a stream of new stuff...and zero commercials.
Hey Kids !... do you know why some 80's music is called "New Music"...it is because in this era of AOR music embargo, a few small stations, not in the usual lineup, dared to play "New Music". Some of us even put up antennas to get that tiny station, usually not a full power major market transmitter (WLIR). This truly was a parallel universe, and the AOR sh!the@ds fought it off as long as they could, kinda like Cable is fighting streaming now.
Yes, it was that bad....and no, I have no sympathy for radio at this point. We won't even get into how horribly compressed and augmented FM radio was back in the day, when it CAN sound about as good as a CD...but never did due to station greed. I once bought an FM tuner...and could never listen to a few stations ever again, once I heard how bad the full quieting signal truly was.
Radio is still shooting its own feet. Digital is a great idea, but the sidebands detract from the main signal. The solution is to go fully digital, but that won't happen. A digital signal only works near the transmitters, and many dual mode radios "skip" when going from the digital source back to the analog source. Corporate greed then says "hey, we need 40 streams on this signal" so, like a teen who wanted every single song on one CD, they all sound like crap.....
When, the basic FM analog signal can be almost full CD quality....
Nope, when it dies, it will be suicide, and we won't mourn.
rideshare is OK for a night bar hopping but isn't a replacement for car ownership in most places.
This is the same mentality that tears up six lane city boulevards, puts in two lanes of "hard bike lane", and with trucks unloading, means you get 1 1/2 lanes of travel.
Meanwhile, in NYC at least, the mass transit system they want you to use is overloaded and the 1930 technology is barely hanging on.
Anyone who can afford it tends to own a car. There is a reason a private parking space can be $600 or more....the rest fight alternate side parking.
Money is spent on bicycle silly-ness for a small percentage of the population to use in good weather only...the City govt is trying to find ways to steal money from folks living out of the City, to pay for all of this....just keep hacking up Avenues and such...great going, guys....
And, once you leave the hothouse confines of NYC, car ownership is pretty much required if you have a job, go to school, or do pretty much anything.
and, for CATV, the quailty was actually better than most OTA. That, sadly, changed too....and one day I hooked up the antenna on my roof as a lark, and was AMAZED how much better the picture was...and this was back in the NTSC era.
exactly. It's a deterrent, they don't threaten to nuke the arab world...but if they get aggressive, there are a few subs out there that would finish any job....

I have good web with no data cap nonsense. I'd stream happily, but many films aren't streamable. They make you mail discs back and forth instead...
I used to pay taxes monthly to the bank. Every month, I sent a decent sum to the govt for not much. One day, I was told no more.
